Doris received a $2,000 grant toward her one-month trip and is particularly interested in learning more about the language since she traveled to Morocco once before. 鈥淚 felt the language barrier between myself and the people I met when I traveled to Morocco with 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Model Arab League a few semesters ago,鈥 Doris said. 鈥淓ven without being able to speak the language, I felt the generosity and beauty of the people who I encountered. From the experiences I had, I felt the desire to learn Arabic so that I could see more of the culture and reciprocate some of the kindness that was shown to me.鈥 Doris, who will begin law school in the fall, also plans to use her improved language skills to serve as a legal advocate for immigrants. 鈥淚 would love to be able to serve different communities as an attorney and an advocate,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am from an Irish immigrant family, which has motivated me to explore immigration and human rights law. Learning Arabic would enable me to serve a larger immigrant community.鈥 Gammill, who received a $2,500 grant and will travel abroad for two months, said the experience will help prepare him for his future career in foreign service. 鈥淚鈥檝e focused much of my undergraduate career on learning about the Arab world and plan to work in foreign service someday,鈥 Gammill said. 鈥淎rabic is a language that particularly interests me but also is particularly valuable in getting work in the U.S. State Department.鈥]]> Book sale to raise money for study abroad scholarships /news-archive/2018/02/20/book-sale-study-abroad-scholarships/ Tue, 20 Feb 2018 15:34:42 +0000 /news/?p=69469 ... Book sale to raise money for study abroad scholarships]]> A University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor is collecting book donations to raise money for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students hoping to attend a summer language program in France.聽 The Department of World Languages will host a book sale in April to raise scholarship funds for students who wish to travel abroad this summer. To assist with the book sale, the department welcomes donations until Wednesday, March 28. Donors can drop books off at the department office in Stabler Hall Room 301 or contact Zac Hagins, assistant professor of French, at zrhagins@ualr.edu to schedule a time to have the books picked up. “As an undergraduate I was fortunate enough to study abroad in France and Japan, so I know the transformative power of the study abroad adventure,鈥 Hagins said. 鈥淓very student who wants to experience life in another culture should have that chance.鈥 With students juggling family, work, and school, Hagins knows that meeting the financial obligations of studying abroad can be tough. Having led the summer French program, he also knows the importance of students being able to travel and experience another culture first-hand. 鈥淢any dream of having the opportunity, but they worry about taking out loans or working extra hours to save enough money to participate,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he book sale allows us to help at least one student offset the costs of realizing his or her dream. With any luck, the book sale will continue to grow, and we will be able to help even more students in the future.” With the funds raised from the book sale, Hagins will provide a scholarship to a student participating in the World Languages Department Summer Language Program in Orl茅ans, France, who demonstrates a financial need. In 2017, the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock community donated 40 boxes of books for the first World Languages Department book sale and raised $400. Rebekah Duke, a French major who graduated in August 2017, received the first Department of World Languages Octave Uzanne Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad in France. The scholarship helped Duke attend a faculty-led summer language program to Paris and Orleans, France. The scholarship is named in honor of Octave Uzanne, a French writer, journalist, and book publisher who聽founded the Soci茅t茅 des Bibliophiles Contemporaines and served as its first president. Noted for his literary research on 18th-century authors, Uzanne also researched fashion and femininity and wrote novels and fantasy books.]]> Department hosts book sale to raise money for study abroad /news-archive/2017/02/07/book-sale-study-abroad-2017/ Tue, 07 Feb 2017 16:13:51 +0000 /news/?p=66218 ... Department hosts book sale to raise money for study abroad]]> From March 6-8, the Department of World Languages will host a book sale in the Upper Concourse of the Donaghey Student Center to help raise scholarship funds for students who wish to travel abroad this summer.聽 In hopes of reaching its financial goal, the department welcomes donations until Feb. 24. Donors can drop books off at Hagin鈥檚 office or schedule a time to have items picked up. 鈥淚 know students here really struggle with trying to find ways to finance their study abroad trips,鈥 said Hagins. 鈥淪ome of the student clubs in the department have done bake sales to raise money, so what I did was try to come up with something that would hopefully raise a larger sum, so that we could really help offset some of the costs of study abroad and the summer language programs.鈥 The cost to study in a foreign country can range anywhere between聽$2,000 to $35,000, depending on the type, length, and location of the program, according to study abroad director Emily Cox. 鈥淓ach year, we traditionally offer three summer language programs,鈥 Cox said. 鈥淭wo of them go to Spanish- speaking countries and the other to France. This program, which is part faculty led and part independent, is among the most popular with our students.鈥 With students juggling family, work, and school, Hagins knows that meeting the financial obligations of studying abroad can be tough. Having led the summer French program, he also knows the importance of students being able to travel and experience another culture first-hand. 鈥淔or many of these students, it鈥檚 their first time on a plane or leaving the country,鈥 Hagins said. 鈥淪ome students may not be able to stay for an entire semester, but they can do four weeks. This still gives them the exposure and experience that I think everyone should have.鈥 With this book sale, Hagins hopes to raise enough money to provide a scholarship for at least one student. For more information on the book sale or to donate, contact Hagins at zrhagins@ualr.edu.]]>
