��Vlog��ý Little Rock to Host Giving Day 2022 on March 29

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is encouraging friends of the university, employees, alumni, students, and the community to come together to make a difference at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock on Tuesday, March 29, the university’s fourth annual Giving Day celebration. Donations to Giving Day 2022 will focus on student scholarships, student support, and enhancements to the learning and living environment. “Approximately 68 percent of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students work while going to college,” said Christian O’Neal, vice chancellor for university advancement. “Whether your gift is to the General Scholarship Fund or the other areas that are supported by Giving Day, we want our donors to know that we see firsthand how much of an impact these gifts have on our students.” Another important philanthropic option is the Student Support Fund, which provides funds for ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students to meet basic needs like food, gas, rent, and medical expenses in extreme circumstances and emergencies. “The little things are often the big things when you’re a college student,” said Kristi Smith, senior director of alumni and development. “There are times when food, gas, rent, and other items just aren’t affordable. Many of our students face food insecurity, and more than 40 percent are at risk of becoming homeless. When you lend a college student a hand, you help them stay on track with life and their education.” Your gifts can also help enhance students’ living and learning spaces on campus. Donations to the Beautification Fund will help ��Vlog��ý Little Rock maintain a beautiful and environmentally responsible campus for everyone who learns, works, and visits the university. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock will celebrate the success of Giving Day 2022 with the return of Taste of Little Rock. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s highly anticipated culinary and social event, Taste of Little Rock, will return March 29. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock will honor alumna Dr. Sara Tariq, associate dean for student affairs in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (��Vlog��ýMS), as the 2022 Taste of Little Rock honoree. “I am deeply honored to be a part of Taste of Little Rock,” Tariq said. “As a child of immigrant parents from India, I have a first-hand understanding of the economic and social challenges that some students face. Getting a scholarship to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock allowed me to focus solely on my studies. The faculty at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock provided me with the mentorship and knowledge to take the next steps in my career, which included getting admitted to medical school at ��Vlog��ýMS.” The event is set for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the Jack Stephens Center. Taste of Little Rock raises funds to help students through the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association Scholarship Fund while introducing guests to some of the best food in the city from the finest restaurants in Little Rock. During the past 16 years, Taste of Little Rock has raised more than $682,000 for student scholarships. “We are excited to honor Dr. Tariq for her passion to impact the lives of Arkansans through education,” said Kristi Smith, senior director of development. “During her time as a student, she was enrolled in the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program, which presented her with foundational tools of research and writing that she has used for the betterment of society. She is an outstanding example of the best and brightest from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock who have graduated and enjoyed success in their chosen fields. ” Tariq, who is well-known among ��Vlog��ýMS medical students as a compassionate educator and mentor, is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and an exceptional physician who teaches by example. She is a 1993 graduate of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock who holds a bachelor’s degree in biology. In 2018, Tariq was named Outstanding Alumni of the Year for the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. This year, Hendrix College will award her the Ethel K. Millar Award for Religion and Social Awareness. Tariq received her medical degree from ��Vlog��ýMS in 1998 and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She joined the ��Vlog��ýMS faculty in 2002 after serving as chief resident at Brown University. She is a professor of internal medicine and serves as medical director of the Center for Clinical Skills Education. A firm believer in giving back to the community, Tariq’s philanthropic efforts in the Little Rock community are immense. She has served as president of the board of the Harmony Health Clinic, which serves the uninsured and underserved population in Pulaski County, for the past decade, and has co-chaired the annual Bollywood Nights gala for many years. “I strongly believe in lifting others up so we can all be successful in this state,” Tariq said. “Delivering primary care to the uninsured people of Little Rock at Harmony Clinic, promoting social justice by serving on the board of Just Communities of Arkansas, and serving on Mayor Frank Scott’s transition team have helped me continue to serve the people of this state, but also helped me grow as an individual. I want future ��Vlog��ý Little Rock graduates to have the same opportunities for growth and leadership as I have had. I am ecstatic to support ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students by raising money for scholarships.” In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tariq started a community mask campaign with two ��Vlog��ýMS physicians to financially support women who have lost their jobs during the pandemic. The women are given sewing machines to help stitch face masks and donate masks to those in need. So far, the campaign has raised more than $16,000 and distributed more than 4,000 face masks. “When the pandemic hit, so many people felt helpless,” Tariq said. “While small at first, now we are not only helping Muslims and immigrant communities, but we are also providing face masks to several faith communities, nursing homes, and churches whose congregations primarily consist of colored, marginalized, or low-income communities in central Arkansas.” Stephanie Caruthers, a managing partner at Trio’s restaurant and co-chair of Taste of Little Rock, emphasized the importance of raising scholarship funds for college students. Loris Fullerton, a member of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Board of Directors, is also serving as co-chair of Taste of Little Rock. “The Alumni Association scholarships are an important part of our support and advocacy for the university and, as an Alumni Association Board member, I am able to experience first-hand the impact of Taste of Little Rock scholarships,” Caruthers said. “I have had the privilege of interviewing scholarship applicants, and that process has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my board service. Business leaders join ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Board of Directors

The University of Arkansas Little Rock has announced new members and officers for the Alumni Board of Directors. New members include Eundra Boles, vice president of information technology services at Celerit Solutions Corporation; Ellen Brown, farmer engagement manager for Heifer USA; Victoria Brown, associate state director of AARP Arkansas; Loris Fullerton, travel agent with Westrock Travel and 2019 recipient of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s Presidents Award; and Claudia Utley, communications director at Economics Arkansas. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Board of Directors members who have taken on leadership roles include James Bobo, president; Jennifer Owens, scholarship committee chair, Stephanie Caruthers, Taste of Little Rock chair, and Gina Pharis, membership committee chair. All new board members are ��Vlog��ý Little Rock alumni who will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2020. Boles graduated from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock with a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems in 1996. He also completed his MBA at the American Intercontinental University in 2004. He enjoys sporting events, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. Ellen Brown has worked for Heifer International for six years and currently serves as the farmer engagement manager for Heifer USA. In this role, she oversees Heifer International’s outreach to farmers in the United States. Brown graduated from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock with a Bachelor of Arts in international studies and certification in nonprofit management in 2013. She also has a Master of Science in community and economic development from the University of Central Arkansas. Brown also serves on the City of Little Rock’s Racial and Cultural Diversity Commission. Victoria Brown, associate state director of AARP Arkansas, has worked successfully to improve communications and social media footprints among public sector and nonprofit organizations. Brown leads AARP Arkansas’ initiative to increase communications, heads up the organization’s website and social media, and works closely on AARP’s multicultural activities. She has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Philander Smith College and a Master of Public Administration degree from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 2014. Loris Fullerton is the recipient of the 2019 Presidents Award. Over the past decade, Fullerton has helped raise more than $1 million for scholarships during her nine years chairing Jazz & Juleps, which benefited the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology. Fullerton graduated from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 1974 with bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology. She worked several years in the banking and investment industries before following her passion to be a travel agent. An endowed scholarship in her name has been awarded to a student studying audiology and speech pathology since 2014. Claudia Utley graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in English and began working as a fashion journalist in Los Angeles. Utley worked as a communications analyst for Alltel Corp. while earning an MBA at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 2000. She also worked as a public information officer for the Department of Arkansas Heritage. In 2012, Utley joined Economics Arkansas, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting economic, personal finance, and entrepreneurship literacy among Arkansas PreK-12 students. Initially responsible for grant writing, donor management, and fundraising activities, Utley was recently promoted to the newly created role of communications director. Taste of Little Rock draws record crowd, raises $100,000

Taste of Little Rock set new records this year, with nearly 800 people attending and more than $100,000 raised for student scholarships. Visitors were treated to tamales from , perfectly plated beef medallions with mashed potato from Arthur’s, melt-in-your-mouth sweets from , frozen treats from and many other cuisines provided by this year’s 33 vendors. served a seafood pasta that won over the crowd and earned the restaurant the “Best of Taste” designation for the second year in a row. “This was by far the most highly attended Taste of Little Rock yet,” said Ryan Miller, director of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association. “We are excited that this event continues to grow and have an impact on student scholarships.” The event raised just over $100,000 for student scholarships. “This event wouldn’t happen without our volunteers,” Miller said. “Mauri Douglass has been the longtime chair of this event, and we wouldn’t be successful without her guidance. Stephanie Caruthers stepped in to serve as co-chair, and we look forward to her leadership in the coming year. Additionally, the Alumni Board and Taste of Little Rock committee put in countless hours securing sponsors and restaurants to make the event a success, and we had more than 75 student volunteers.” This year’s Taste of Little Rock paid tribute to Arkansas Heart Hospital CEO Bruce Murphy for his longtime support of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock and his work to impact the health of Arkansans. Murphy, who graduated from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science, has been a longtime supporter of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. Last year, he gave $800,000 to the College of Education and Health Professions. That gift helps support the Student Success Initiatives Fund, which provides academic tutoring and mentoring to students as well as a full-time social worker to assist students. On April 3, the night before Taste of the Little Rock, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock hosted a small reception honoring Dr. Murphy. Sloan Davidson, director of the nursing department, told Dr. Murphy that her students have benefited tremendously from having access to a social worker. Nursing is ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s largest major, with more than 400 students enrolled in associate degree programs and another 400 in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. “Many students have life issues, and their financial need is tremendous,” she said. “A majority are first-generation, and oftentimes they work multiple jobs to get through school to better themselves and their families.” Davidson has had students who have dealt with the death of a spouse and a child. “Having resources to help them get through that and have access to mental health care makes all the difference,” she said. “This gift has been a godsend for our program and our students.” The Student Success Initiatives fund includes emergency funds that have been used to help students in desperate situations. “We’ve been able to help students renew their electricity and prevent them from being evicted. We’ve had homeless students we’ve been able to get housing for. It’s just been more than we could ever ask for, and we so appreciate it,” Davidson told Dr. Murphy. Those kinds of resources often mean the difference between students dropping out of school or finishing a degree that will help them get a job with which they can support themselves and their families. ‘“It’s also adding a nurse to our community, where we currently have a nursing shortage,” Davidson said. Murphy said he felt honored by his alma mater. “I believe that I have a debt to pay to for where I am,” he said. “My expectation when I began this was not that I’d be where I am today. The 16th annual Taste of Little Rock will introduce guests to some of the best food from the finest restaurants in central Arkansas while honoring Arkansas Heart Hospital CEO Bruce Murphy for his longtime support of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and his work to impact the health of Arkansans. The event will be on Thursday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. Proceeds benefit the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. Mauri Douglas (Class of ’74 and ’86) is co-chairing the event for the fifth year along with Stephanie Caruthers, a managing partner at Trios restaurant. “I have helped interview students who have applied for scholarships,” Douglas said. “ I’ve heard their stories. I know what these scholarships mean to our students.” The event honors Dr. Murphy, a longtime Little Rock cardiologist, who graduated in 1975 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In 2011, he became the CEO of Arkansas Heart Hospital. “We are excited to honor Dr. Murphy for his passion to impact the lives of Arkansans through education and creating a healthy lifestyle,” said Ryan Miller, director of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association. “He is passionate about moving the city of Little Rock forward in collaboration with the university. When I first met him, he said he wanted to make Little Rock more of a college town – and I believe this effort will have a lasting impact on our ��ǳ��ܲԾ��ٲ�.” A longtime supporter of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, Murphy gave $800,000 last year to the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock College of Education and Health Professions. Murphy said he hopes the gift will help equip students with the resources they need to overcome obstacles that might prevent them from getting a college education. “Dr. Murphy understands the role ��Vlog��ý Little Rock plays in this city and is willing to support programs that promote student success while helping the economy of the region,” ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Chancellor Andrew Rogerson said. Murphy has also been instrumental in creating new and innovative ways to impact the health of Arkansans. His vision of exercise and food as medicine can be seen in a variety of initiatives. The is the largest intensive cardiac rehabilitation facility in the state and the only unit in central Arkansas. There, patients are treated through diet, exercise, and lifestyle education to help them live their best lives. His work is also reflected in the mission of the Arkansas Heart Hospital Foundation, now known as Champions for Health, which focuses on helping Arkansas youth learn how to plan for health. According to Murphy, “To be a transformative organization, you have to be disruptive.” This year’s Taste of Little Rock will feature more than 40 restaurants. 2018 Taste of Little Rock raises $138k for student scholarships

The 2018 Taste of Little Rock event raised more than $138,000 for student scholarships at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the most ever raised in the event’s 15-year history. More than 700 people attended Taste of Little Rock, presented by, April 26 at Jack Stephens Center. The event has continued to grow in size and popularity, with patrons enjoying the culinary specialties of 42 central Arkansas restaurants. Thanks to this year’s Taste of Little Rock — ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s largest annual scholarship fundraiser — the $138,125 raised will fund 15 additional scholarships for ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students. The event celebrated Alfred Williams, senior vice president and risk consultant for BXS Insurance, and Elaine Eubank, president and chief executive officer of Easterseals Arkansas, for their lifelong commitment to their alma mater through service, engagement, and philanthropy. “I was approached by a young woman at the event that wanted to thank me,” Williams said. “She said that she was the recipient of one of our scholarships that allowed her to complete her studies and stay in school. She graduates this spring and has been accepted to law school. What more can I say? This is what alumni scholarships are all about.”

A new feature of this year’s Taste of Little Rock was the Best of Taste competition, in which guests voted for their favorite restaurant of the evening. Patrons selected Samantha’s Taproom and Wood Fire Grill of Little Rock as the winner of the first Best of Taste Award. A ��Vlog��ý Little Rock scholarship will be named in honor of Samantha’s. Additionally, the restaurant has an automatic spot in the 2019 Taste of Little Rock in order to defend its title. “It’s always a great honor to be recognized for your hard work and inspiration,” Smith said. “It always puts a smile on my face. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock announces 2018 Distinguished Alumni, Presidents Award honorees

The CEO of Arkansas’ largest healthcare system has been named the 2018 University of Arkansas at Little Rock Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Troy Wells, who earned a master’s degree in health services administration in 1997 at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, joined Baptist Health in 2006, and became the CEO and president in 2014. Wells will be honored during the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Distinguished Alumni Awards Celebration on Friday, May 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library. Joining Wells is the 2018 ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Presidents Award recipient, Mauri Douglass, a retired gifted and talented educator who serves on the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association Board and has chaired Taste of Little Rock for four years. She also is the alumnae liaison for the Chi Omega chapter at the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association, her Gamma Zeta chapter sisters, and the Little Rock Chi Omega Alumnae Club. “The contributions and dedication of Troy and Mauri bring credit to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock and exemplify the heart of a Trojan,” said Christian O’Neal, vice chancellor for university advancement. “While their backgrounds vary, they are both united by outstanding accomplishments and service back to their alma mater.” The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor presented by the university while the Presidents Award is bestowed on individuals with career success and a profound dedication to the university.

The 15th annual Taste of Little Rock will honor Alfred Williams and Elaine Eubank for their lifetime of support to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Set for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Jack Stephens Center on the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock campus, Taste of Little Rock raises funds for the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association Scholarship Fund while introducing guests to some of the best food in the city from the finest restaurants in Little Rock. “We are thrilled to honor Alfred and Elaine for their dedication, passion, and support of students at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” said Andrea Angel, associate vice chancellor for alumni and development. “They have a legacy of giving within their family that has positively impacted hundreds of students at our university. The Alumni Association would not be as strong as it is today without the work of these two devoted alumni.” During their more than 30 years of marriage, the couple has made an incredible impact on the university through their generosity of their time, support, and financial gifts. “I’m most proud of growing scholarships and creating scholarships for students at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Williams said. “You can’t improve as a city without higher education.” Eubank graduated from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and Williams in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science. While Eubank serves as the president and chief executive officer of , a nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with disabilities, Williams serves as senior vice president and risk consultant for . Williams continues to follow in the footsteps of his father, Grainger Williams, who was devoted to supporting Little Rock Junior College, Little Rock University, and ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. Williams, former chair of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Board, was honored as the 2013 President’s Award honoree, while Eubank received the university’s 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award. As lifetime members of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association, Williams and Eubank understand that their contributions in support of higher education are for the greater good of the university and the community. They have recently named the university the beneficiary of their life insurance policy, making them members of the Heritage Society. Because Williams was taught that giving was the right thing to do, he endowed two scholarships, the E. Grainger and Francis Williams scholarship and the Elaine Eubank scholarship, as gifts to honor his parents and his wife. Following suit, Eubank surprised Williams by establishing an endowed scholarship in his name, the Alfred Williams scholarship. Williams’ sister, June, a former second-grade teacher, recently followed in her family’s footsteps to create a scholarship for future teachers. As the first person in her family to graduate from college, Eubank understands the importance of helping students earn a college degree. “Alfred had a traditional college experience, and I was more like one of the families that ��Vlog��ý Little Rock works so hard to help,” Eubank said. “It was more of a stretch for my family to send me to college. I appreciate ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s efforts to make college more accessible for students who otherwise would not be able to attend.” Individual tickets are on sale for $75. 2017 Taste of Little Rock hits top fundraising, attendance marks

The 2017 Taste of Little Rock set attendance records and raised the most money for University of Arkansas at Little Rock scholarships in the event’s 14-year history. On Thursday, April 27, more than 700 people dined on the culinary specialties of 35 central Arkansas restaurants at the Jack Stephens Center on the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock campus. Thanks to this year’s Taste of Little Rock — ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s largest annual scholarship fundraiser — the university’s alumni scholarship endowment will grow by $120,764. The endowment also increased this fiscal year by an additional $67,000, as 134 people became lifetime members of the Alumni Association. The 2017 Taste of Little Rock event, presented by Warren and Cindy Simpson, celebrated the Bailey family for their decades of generosity to the university. “It was a privilege last night for Cindy and I to be able to support ��Vlog��ý Little Rock and to honor the Bailey family,” Warren Simpson said April 28. “The Baileys’ dedication to this institution is an inspiration to all of us. Cindy and I will remain diligent in helping ��Vlog��ý Little Rock to continue to be the great university that it already is.” Among the many contributions of the Bailey family were a 2002 donation that facilitated the construction of the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center and a 2015 gift of $2 million for student scholarships.
