Martin to serve as 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 new Windgate Metals Artist-in-Residence]]> 鈥淚 am really looking forward to getting to know the students and people at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 Martin said. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 continued commitment to the future of education, art practices, and diverse mediums speak to my own ways of thinking as both an educator and maker. As an educator, I am committed to sharing what I know in an active dialogue with all of my students. Education carves out a space where both the instructor and students can find a greater sense of purpose and understanding within the world.鈥 As the Windgate Metals Artist-in-Residence, Martin will maintain a robust studio practice, teach courses, oversee the metals instructional facilities, and mentor applied design students with a metals emphasis working with wood, metals, and ceramics. 鈥淲ith the support of the Windgate Foundation, we鈥檝e been able to create expansive course offerings for our students,鈥 said Tom Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled that they will have this opportunity to collaborate with a working artist and see how they build their studio practice. We know that Lydia will bring enthusiasm to the classroom along with her distinctive skill set.鈥 Martin worked as an adjunct faculty member in the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Program at Towson University as well as an instructor and program and studio assistant for the Baltimore Jewelry, a nonprofit alternative education space focused on community outreach, accessibility, and learning. 鈥淎s an instructor and mentor, I have developed curriculum for and taught intro through advanced level and special topics courses,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚 have helped with and engaged in community and educational programming. As part of the staff, I have assisted in formalizing new programs, such as a two-year teaching fellowship for emerging educators and a residency, and continue to reevaluate and restructure existing programs.鈥 She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a post baccalaureate certificate in jewelry and metalsmithing from the Oregon College of Art and Craft, and a Master of Fine Arts from State University of New York at New Paltz. Martin first got started in metal work while she was a freshman in high school. A class in jewelry making turned into a first step to her future career as an artist. 鈥淚 enrolled in a jewelry class, and it was the first time I had ever worked with metal and I fell in love,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was very challenging, and I was excited to work with my hands. From there, I tried my hardest to make it happen to take any jewelry class available.鈥 Martin鈥檚 work has been shown internationally and nationally, including shows in the Netherlands, Germany, and China. Her latest exhibition was a solo show, 鈥淚n the Company of Silence,鈥 at the Jewelers鈥橶erk Galerie in Washington, D.C. 鈥淚t was an exhibition of a continuation of a body of work that I have been making since I graduated from graduate school,鈥 she said. 鈥淢y studio practice has slowed down a little now that teaching has speeded up, but I am looking forward to getting back to my own creative work while at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.鈥 Martin feels that the artist-in-residence faculty position will serve as a stepping stone for her long-term goal of running an art department. 鈥淥ne of my long-term goals has been to teach in academia, and I have always wanted to run my own department,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚 am deeply invested in the future of university arts education and my long-term professional goals include being a part of that larger conversation academically, artistically, and practically. I believe that this opportunity would allow for continued growth and development in my career that continues to develop my skills interpersonally as a maker, educator, and mentor to students at all levels of interest and commitment.鈥漖]> Windgate Foundation Awards 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock More Than $3 Million in Grants for Art Outreach, Art Acquisition, and Children International Education and Outreach Efforts /news-archive/2021/09/02/windgate-foundation-art-outreach-education-grants/ Thu, 02 Sep 2021 16:25:59 +0000 /news/?p=79782 ... Windgate Foundation Awards 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock More Than $3 Million in Grants for Art Outreach, Art Acquisition, and Children International Education and Outreach Efforts]]> 鈥淭hese three grants from the Windgate Foundation will go a long way to support art education and outreach programs in our community,鈥 said Chancellor Christina Drale. 鈥淲e are thankful to the Windgate Foundation for their continued dedication to artists, art educators, and students across the state.鈥 Windgate鈥檚 first grant will provide $1.56 million for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International, which serves approximately 2,100 children and youth in central Arkansas. The first $1.5 million will create an endowed fund to cover operational expenses. Children International will receive $60,000 as a bridge grant to use in the next year. 鈥淲e are impressed by the efforts of the hard-working staff of Children International to provide education and outreach activities for children in the Little Rock School District,鈥 said Pat Forgy, executive director of the Windgate Foundation. 鈥淚鈥檇 encourage others to consider supporting their work to help children become healthy, educated, and self-reliant. There is so much more Children International could accomplish with additional help from the community.鈥 Now in its 27th year, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International offers a variety of school- and community-based programs, including after-school and summer programming, cooking classes, emergency food assistance, and college preparation and career training. 鈥淲e鈥檙e grateful for the continued support of the Windgate Foundation,鈥 said Ryan Davis, director of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International. 鈥淭his endowed fund will allow us to plan further, dig deeper, and reach higher in our work with children and youth in central Arkansas鈥 The second grant provides $1 million to create an endowed art acquisition fund. The funding will be divided equally, with $500,000 going to acquire contemporary craft art from living artists and the other $500,000 to acquire art from living artists. 鈥淭he Windgate Foundation has been a champion of the gallery program for 10 years,鈥 said Brad Cushman, director of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Gallery Program. 鈥淭heir financial support of exhibition programming and acquisitions began in 2011. The Windgate Foundation has granted acquisition funding to major museums and art institutions across the country. They have certainly put the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Gallery Program and Permanent Collection in prestigious company.鈥 With this grant, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will acquire more art for the university鈥檚 permanent art collection, which holds over 1,700 items, and provide a broader range of exhibits for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Gallery Program. 鈥淲indgate鈥檚 support has allowed us to bring more contemporary craft into the collection,鈥 Cushman said. 鈥淭heir support has also helped us to diversify the voices represented in the collection to include more women, Black, Hispanic/Latino, LGBTQ, and other artists.鈥 Additionally, Windgate has awarded 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock a multi-year additional support grant for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Outreach Program. Windgate originally awarded 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock a grant of more than $750,000 in November 2018 to establish a series of educational art workshops for Arkansas high school students and art teachers.

The additional $470,713 grant will continue to support art education outreach efforts for high school students and art teachers in Arkansas through December 2024. The final payment for 2023 is contingent upon an increase of students in 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Art and Design Department. 鈥淲e appreciate the opportunity that the Windgate Foundation has given the department,鈥 said Tom Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design. 鈥淪haring our expertise with the community of art teachers has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for the department faculty. We鈥檙e looking forward to providing more programming and meeting new participants in the future.鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was unable to hold the high school student visits and workshops for K-12 art educators during summer 2020 due to the pandemic. With social distancing procedures in place, the Department of Art and Design continued programming this summer with seven week-long workshops for art educators from across the state. Faculty members Kevin Cates, Jeremy Couch, Joli Livaudais, and Peter Scheidt taught workshops on drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, and woodworking. Art Outreach Specialist Andrea Tompkins reports more than 50 teachers from 33 Arkansas schools attended the workshops and earned 30 hours of professional development credit each. In summer 2022, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock plans to offer two camps for art educators and one camp for highly motivated high school students who are considering majoring in the visual arts. The workshops are free to high school students and art teachers. The Windgate grant will cover on-campus housing, meals, supplies, and instructional materials. Windgate Foundation donates $3 million to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for Windgate Center of Art and Design /news-archive/2020/09/10/windgate-foundation-maintenance-endowment/ Thu, 10 Sep 2020 16:08:39 +0000 /news/?p=77517 ... Windgate Foundation donates $3 million to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for Windgate Center of Art and Design]]> The has made a high-impact gift of more than $3 million to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock that will help educate generations of future artists. 鈥淭he generous gift by the Windgate Foundation for the creation of a building maintenance endowment for the Windgate Center could not have come at a better time,鈥 said 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor Christina Drale. 鈥淭he upkeep of facilities and grounds across the campus is of critical significance to the university鈥檚 capability to fulfill its mission and provide a transformational educational experience for our students.鈥 The gift will be used to establish a maintenance endowment fund for the Windgate Center of Art and Design. The endowment will finance long-term major capital renewal and maintenance projects for the Windgate Center. In addition to the endowed fund, the foundation gave a gift of $42,020 to be used this year for immediate maintenance needs. 鈥淣obody wants to learn or work in a place that is not properly maintained, and it makes sense to support the Center of Art + Design building into the future,鈥 said Patricia Forgy, executive director of the Windgate Foundation. 鈥淭his attention to infrastructure by 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock leadership will benefit both students and our community by providing a well-kept and welcoming place for learning and collaboration.鈥 The Windgate Center opened for instruction and student use in January 2018. It is a state-of-the art facility for instruction in the visual arts. The center was uniquely designed for the purpose of teaching specific media in its classrooms and studios. Well-placed windows throughout the building are a central feature, which allow desired natural light into the studios. Their regular cleaning and maintenance is a necessary upkeep expense that helps provide students, faculty, and members of the public with an ideal space to create and teach art.

Windgate Center of Art and Design

鈥淭he Department of Art and Design is thankful for our decades-long partnership with the Windgate Foundation, helping to educate the next generation of artists,鈥 said Thomas Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design. 鈥淭his gift makes it possible for us to maintain our state-of-the-art facility so that we can continue to provide the highest caliber art education to our students and high-quality programs to the local community.鈥 Two galleries in the Windgate Center provide spaces for showing the university鈥檚 permanent art collection, recent student and faculty artwork, and exhibitions borrowed from other institutions. The galleries have handsome hardwood floors that show the university is committed to the care and development of the art collection and to maintaining a schedule of exhibitions that provide learning experiences for art and design students and aesthetic experiences for the public. The maintenance of these galleries, their floors, and other features is critical to that commitment. The Windgate Center of Art and Design Building Maintenance Endowment can cover these and future maintenance expenses, such as repairs and eventual replacement of the Windgate Center鈥檚 parking lot and roof. With building maintenance costs on the rise and tighter operating budgets, university administrators recognize the importance of finding ways to fund regular maintenance and capital renewal needs. Creating endowed maintenance funds for the sustainability of campus buildings is one of five fundraising priorities established by Chancellor Drale. 鈥淭he Windgate Foundation鈥檚 magnanimous gift not only helps the university achieve one of its priorities, but also serves as an excellent example for other generous donors as we embark on the path to achieving all five of these priorities,鈥 said Chancellor Drale.]]>

Faculty and staff lead in giving to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> Faculty and staff at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock have once again surpassed the national average for faculty and staff giving with the 2018 ALL IN Campus Campaign. Last year, more than 700 faculty and staff members – 46 percent of all employees – contributed to the campaign. Faculty and staff giving is important to the university鈥檚 overall fundraising efforts because foundations and corporations look for a high percentage of employee giving when making funding decisions. The national average for faculty and staff giving is 25 percent. 鈥淭he level of support received from our faculty and staff members inspires,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement. 鈥淚 cannot express how grateful I am to serve with faculty and staff members who show their support.鈥 With the Campus Campaign, the emphasis is on participation rather than dollar amounts. 鈥淓ach gift, whether $1 or $1,000, is truly significant,鈥 said Samantha Wiley, director of annual giving. Funds raised through the annual Campus Campaign provide funding for programs, department and scholarships. 鈥淎s a faculty member and parent of a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alum, I鈥檝e witnessed the impact first-hand that these scholarships can have on a student鈥檚 success,鈥 said Tom Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design and a Campus Campaign steering committee member. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important that we commit to the university as we ask others to do so.鈥 Aresh Assadi, another member of the Campus Campaign steering committee, said the level of faculty and staff participation is a point of pride for the university. 鈥淎s a first-generation student who has benefited immensely from receiving a college education, I am happy to be a part of this steering committee,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 believe that we are raising money for a great cause, and it has been incredibly heartwarming to witness the commitment that our faculty and staff have for our students. The internal giving rate at this campus is much higher than most.鈥 Recurring payroll deductions increased by 2 percent in 2018 over 2017. Additionally, the Office of Alumni and Development received several new planned giving commitments which will benefit students in perpetuity. Campus Departments with 100 percent participation in the campaign received commemorative 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock water bottles provided by the alumni association. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. in the Windgate Center with a reception at 5:30 p.m. The panelists feature members of the Windgate Center鈥檚 building committee, including Tom Clifton, dean of the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences; Mia Hall, director of Penland School of Crafts and former chair of the Department of Art and Design; Floyd Martin, professor of art history; Carey Roberson, chair of the Department of Art and Design; and John Greer, principal architect for WER Architects. The Windgate Center is physically divided into two distinct architectural forms based on the unique use of the spaces. Both forms are connected and share common utilities and circulation patterns. The studio arts portion of the building is a three-story, structural steel-framed building that houses classrooms, galleries, a lecture hall, departmental administration suite, and permanent collection storage that make up the visual arts program. The applied design area of the building is a single-story, high-bay industrial-style space that lends itself to three-dimensional forms of art. The building is designed to have a strong community presence to help strengthen the various community partnerships that have been forged over the years. Access for gallery shows, art festivals, and other events is an important component in the building design. Sustainable measures are fully integrated into the building orientation, exterior envelope, and support systems to support energy and long-term maintenance efficiencies. The wooden houses came boxed with a simple explanation: 鈥淓ach unique house is given as an expression of appreciation for the special and kind gesture of supporting the creative spirit.鈥 Warrick has made hundreds of the houses over the past 20 years to give friends and family as a thank-you of sorts. The project started when his wife had serious complications during childbirth. To thank the many friends and family who helped them, he gave a simple wooden house he crafted. He thought the spirit houses would be a perfect way to say thanks to the university supporters who attended Friday night鈥檚 ticketed event. Using scraps of hardwood, faculty members Peter Scheidt and Julia Baugh helped Warrick cut, sand, and glue the wood pieces. Graphic design professor Kevin Cates designed the Windgate Center for Art聽+ Design logo. Andy Huss, a local sculptor, volunteered time sanding and clear coating the pieces. Graphic design student Chassidy Siratt laser-cut a Windgate Center logo on the bottom of each house, and Warrick individually numbered the houses – like art collector pieces.
