Bowen alum Cody Hiland confirmed as U.S. Attorney]]> A graduate of the William H. Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas.聽 Cody Hiland, of Conway, serves as the 20th Judicial prosecuting attorney, which serves Faulkner, Van Buren, and Searcy counties. President Donald Trump nominated Hiland after receiving recommendations by Sen. John Boozman and Sen. Tom Cotton. Hiland was on Sept. 28 to serve a four-year term as U.S. Attorney. 鈥淚 am pleased that the Senate confirmed Cody, who I am confident will be an excellent U.S. Attorney,鈥 Boozman said in a press release. 鈥淗e has the commitment, experience, and expertise necessary to tackle the challenges he will face in this new role. I congratulate Cody and look forward to working with him to help make our communities safer.鈥 Hiland graduated from Bowen in 1998. He is a former partner at Hiland, Thomas & Cox, PLLC in Conway. He also previously served as staff attorney and rural and community liaison for the Arkansas Public Service Commission; program director for the Arkansas Transitional Employment Board; and legislative liaison and aide to Gov. Mike Huckabee. The U.S. Attorney鈥檚 Office Eastern District of Arkansas includes five divisions and 41 counties in the state. It is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation for this district. It is a simulation of an international organization, the League of Arab States, which has 22 member countries. While visiting Washington, D.C., the students met with Sen. More than 400 students participated in the conference March 29 to April 2. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock team members represented Somalia, a country located on the Horn of Africa with a population of about 11 million people. 鈥淭he students conducted simulated diplomatic negotiations on a variety of important issues 鈥 聽from the refugee crisis to water scarcity to combating terrorism,鈥 said Dr. Rebecca Glazier, faculty adviser of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Model Arab League and associate professor in the School of Public Affairs. Dean Whitman meets with Arkansas lawmakers in Washington]]> Dr. Lawrence Whitman, dean of the George W. Donaghey College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, traveled to Washington, D.C. Feb. 6-8 to meet with members of the Arkansas congressional delegation.聽 Whitman was joined by University of Arkansas College of Engineering Dean John English, Arkansas State University College of Engineering Associate Dean Paul Mixon, and Arkansas Technical University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean Neal Barlow. The deans, along with engineering deans from across the country who are members of the Engineering Deans Council of the, heard from U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, who is also an engineer. The group also met with U.S. Sen. John Boozman, U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, U.S. Rep. French Hill, and the staff of U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford and U.S. Rep. Steve Womack. During the trip, the group thanked the congressmen for their support of federal research dollars for Arkansas educators and researchers, and described how research impacts the state and country. Whitman pointed out and provided examples as to how that research improves the classes that students take for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The group also discussed upcoming legislation, K-12 education, the federal budget, and federal funding for research and development, Whitman said.
