��Vlog��ýLR honors Little Rock women in public service and government

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a lunch and panel discussion to honor local women who have spent their lives working in public service and government careers. The lunch will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, in Ledbetter Hall at the Donaghey Student Center (DSC) and will celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month theme: “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.” Panel members include ��Vlog��ýLR Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Dr. Zulma Toro, Arkansas State Sen. Joyce Elliott, Political Analyst Jessica Sabin, and Assistant City Attorney for North Little Rock and Sherwood Public Defender Tjuana Byrd. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Sara Beth Estes, associate dean in the College of Social Sciences and Communication.

Cherine Badawi, an accomplished experiential educator and instructional designer, will serve as the keynote speaker at the Women’s History Month luncheon on March 2.

The event’s keynote speaker is, an accomplished experiential educator and instructional designer who has worked globally to bring people together and empower them to create a more socially just, thriving, and peaceful world. She will present a lecture about women’s leadership and empowerment. The event is free to members of the ��Vlog��ýLR community. Trojan Tip-Off starts first week of classes

The new academic year will kick off with a new and exciting event, the Trojan Tip-Off and Pep Rally. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m. on Aug. 17 in the Donaghey Student Center Fitness Center, part of Trojan Daze, a weeklong schedule to orient students to campus and build relationships. Hosted by the Office of Campus Life, the ��Vlog��ýLR Athletic Department, and the Student Government Association, this event will have music, free food and T-shirts, and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow students, faculty, and staff. Starting at 4 p.m., attendees may eat and socialize at the Student Organization Fair. A pep rally will be held during the event, and everyone is encouraged to wear their Trojan gear to help celebrate the upcoming academic year. The night will end with a “Sync or Sink” competition. Sync or Sink is a lip sync battle with three-to-eight person teams performing one-minute routines. Winners will be decided by a panel of judges. Welcome Back Week invites returning and new students back for spring

��Vlog��ýLR will hold its Welcome Back Week for all new and returning students enrolled for the spring 2015 semester. The celebration kicked off on Monday, Jan. 12, and it continues throughout the week with free and fun activities, including plenty of food and entertainment. The tradition lets students know the school is happy to have them back for another semester and to welcome any new students who are just starting out at ��Vlog��ýLR, according to Emily Cox, development specialist in the Office of Campus Life. “After all, the students are the reason we are all here, and we have missed them over the long winter break,” she said. The schedule for the rest of Welcome Back Week is as follows: Wednesday, Jan. 14: Student Organization Fair 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. DSC Rooms A,B, and C Get involved through one of ��’s 130 registered student organizations. Wednesday, Jan. 14: ��Vlog��ýLR After Dark 5 to 7 p.m. Campus Wide Student volunteers will hand out survival bags to nighttime and commuter students. ‘Songwriter’s Showcase’ features student compositions Nov. 8

The “Songwriter’s Showcase” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, featuring the work of six student composers that will premiere during the first half of the show. Following intermission, ceramicist and flutist Rey Ortega will premier “Maya Lullaby” by Resident Composer Dr. Robert Boury and Associate Professor Laura Amrhein. Ortega will recreate ancient Mayan flutes using traditional building and firing techniques. He will also conduct a master class at 3 p.m., Nov. 8, in the Fine Arts Ceramics Studio. ‘Trojan Transformation’ orientation sessions scheduled for spring and summer

The ��Vlog��ýLR Office of Campus Life welcomes new Trojans to campus through several scheduled orientation sessions over the summer months. All freshmen and freshmen transfers with 12 hours or less of college credit must attend an orientation. New students will be able to meet academic advisors, explore degree programs, enroll in courses, and get a taste of college life. Students have the following dates for “Trojan Transformation: Orientation 2014” from which to choose:

Songwriter’s Showcase to feature David Barrett

David Barrett will be the guest performer during the Songwriter’s Showcase, an event that will feature student composers and songwriters, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall at ��Vlog��ýLR. ��’s Department of Music and Office of Campus Life are hosting the event. The showcase is free to the public. Parking will be available in Lot 8 by entering the driveway to the Fine Arts Building off Campus Drive via 28th Street. (See campus map) For more information, contact ��’s Department of Music at 501.569.3294. Barrett’s music has reached millions. He is the composer of the highly acclaimed, “One Shining Moment,” the theme song for the NCAA Basketball Championships. He has also lent his musical talents for other sporting events including the Olympics, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Barrett recently won a silver medal at the New York Film festival for the hip-hop song “Don’t Cross that Line” and an Emmy for his score of a PBS documentary about writer C.S. Lewis. He will sing some of his original works during the annual showcase. Homecoming court and spirit winners to be recognized at March 8 game

The results of last week’s student voting have been tabulated, and five young women have been named to the 2014 ��Vlog��ýLR Homecoming Court. The court consists of Quay Allen-Smith, Vivien-Sara Fechner, Sharhonda Kelly, Gabrielle Phifer, and Tuesday Williams. Students are encouraged to come out to see who will be crowned homecoming queen during halftime at the Trojan men’s basketball game on Saturday, March 8, in the ��Vlog��ýLR Jack Stephens Center. Tip off is at 7 p.m. The men’s basketball team scored its second victory in eight days after upsetting Arkansas State University on March 1 with a score of 74-67. March 8 marks the final game of the basketball season, and students always get in free. Also during the homecoming game, one student organization will receive outstanding spirit recognition based on participation and level of school pride exhibited at homecoming week events. The winning organization will receive the Homecoming Spirit Cup and $300. In order to qualify for this award, organizations must have participated in several homecoming week events such as the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at the Donaghey Student Center Aquatic Center at noon Friday, March 7, as well as the women’s basketball game at 4:30 p.m. and the men’s basketball game on March 8. In addition to the title of “Most Spirited Organization,” one fan, who must be a ��Vlog��ýLR student, will be recognized for his or her Trojan pride by judges during the men’s game. The “Most Spirited Fan” will also be recognized with a trophy and $300.

Toys for Tots selects ��Vlog��ýLR as toy drop location

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve has again selected the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as one of its official toy drop-off locations for its . The Office of Campus Life and the Non-Traditional Student Organization are collecting toys as part of the annual program that helps children across the nation have a better Christmas. Donor stations will be set up in the Donaghey Student Center and the Student Services Center, according to Non-Traditional Student Programs Coordinator Cynda Alexander. In the DSC, locations will be in the Office of Campus Life, ��Vlog��ýLR Bookstore, Diamond Cafe, and Starbucks. In the SSC, the donor stations will be in the main lobby of the second floor and in the foyer of the cashier’s office. Toys should be new and unwrapped. Toys and monetary donations may be dropped off at the Non-Traditional Student office until Monday, Dec. 16. Arrangements can also be made with Alexander for pickups at cmalexander@ualr.edu. This year marks the second time ��Vlog��ýLR has participated as an official Toys for Tots drop site. Last year, the ��Vlog��ýLR campus contributed approximately 400 toys for distribution to less fortunate families before the holidays.

Hispanic Heritage celebrations continue

The Office of Campus Life is hosting events to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month observed Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The annual celebrations acknowledge the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The anniversary of the independence of the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua is celebrated Sept. 15. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day, or Dia de la Raza, Oct. 12, is also celebrated. Related events at ��Vlog��ýLR include Soul Salsa & Salsa Magic from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Hall. A hit romantic comedy that tells the story of an African-American man and a Latino woman forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices, Platanos y Collard Greens, will be performed at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in University Theater. Billed as a “modern-day West Side Story,” the play will be performed by a touring group of New York theater students and is free and open to the public.
