The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Sustainability Committee has awarded three $2,500 grants for innovative research and teaching proposals at ��Vlog��ýLR geared toward the development and promotion of the principles of sustainability. Dr. Michael DeAngelis, assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, won a grant for his project, “Using Nanoscale Synthetic Olivine to Capture and Store Excess Carbon.” “I am very thankful to the ��Vlog��ýLR Sustainability Committee for selecting my proposal to fund,” DeAngelis said. “While I personally believe that this research is valuable to society and to the goals of sustainability. It is nice to have the committee members, who are outside of my area of research, provide some affirmation of the importance of this work.” He will use his grant money to purchase equipment and chemicals for his laboratory and to hire a student lab assistant, who he hopes will continue the work as an undergraduate research project in the fall. Dr. Wei Zhao, a professor of chemistry, and Dr. Tar-Pin Chen, a professor of physics, received a grant for their project, “Solar Energy-Assisted Water Splitting for Green Fuel Hydrogen Production.” The third grant went to Karthik Boregowda, a master’s student in the Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering, for his project, “Strength Characteristic Analysis of Aerated Cellular Concrete with Quarry Dust as Fine Aggregate.” The grant funds can be used for travel, educational materials, equipment purchases, field trips, and guest speakers. The Sustainability Committee promotes healthy environments, economies, and societies, starting with the ��Vlog��ýLR campus.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Sustainability Committee was selected as an award recipient for the 2016 Sustain the Rock Awards in the category of educator. The awards recognize local organizations and individuals for their contributions to a more livable Little Rock through the promotion and adoption of sustainable practices. The award was��presented at the seventh annual Little Rock Sustainability Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center. The summit serves as a gathering of business, environmental, and civic leaders to discuss and promote sustainable “green” efforts in Little Rock. ��Vlog��ýLR created the Sustainability Committee 10 years ago with goals to research, evaluate, and recommend measures the university should take in the interest of campus sustainability, including how best to spend an annual budget. Additionally, the committee was tasked with informing, educating, and encouraging the university community to conserve resources and protect the environment. Since its formation, the Sustainability Committee has helped implement numerous measures supporting long-term sustainability by achieving:

Bronze Status in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Reporting System, an initiative of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education ��
An updated campus transit system in 2015. The six battery-operated and solar-powered vehicles replaced the contracted diesel-fueled trolley shuttle service that was in use since January 2012
Dedicated charging stations for electric-powered and low-emission vehicles
The launch of a new small grant program to support the incorporation of sustainability into research activities at ��Vlog��ýLR. Today, nearly 30 percent of ��Vlog��ýLR academic departments have faculty engaged in research related to or focused on sustainability
Establishment of the ��Vlog��ýLR Campus Garden, a collaborative partnership between the Sustainability Committee, Anthropology Club, Nonprofit Leadership Student Association, the Biology Club, the ��Vlog��ýLR Anthropology program, the ��Vlog��ýLR Biology program, the Central Arkansas New Agrarian Society, and the University District neighborhood. Founded in spring 2012, the garden uses only organic and sustainable methods and techniques ��
The upgrading and retrofitting of several campus areas to enhance energy conservation in public buildings and reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent by 2017
The completion of several Gold-rated LEED Certified Buildings, including the new Engineering and Information Technology Building, the Nanotechnology Building, the Student Services Center, and West Hall
Participation in the Take Back the Tap national initiative included working with students to promote the use of tap water over bottled water

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Sustainability Committee is accepting submissions for innovative research and teaching proposals for a $2,500 grant toward the development and promotion of the principles of sustainability.

Grant funds can be used for travel, educational materials, equipment purchases, field trips, and guest speakers. All funds must be spent by the end of the fiscal year.

The submission deadline is 5��p.m. April 1. All full- and��part-time faculty, instructors, and staff members are eligible to apply.

Sustainability Day set for Thursday on ��Vlog��ýLR campus

Members of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s sustainability committee invite the campus to reduce its carbon footprint the week of Oct. 19-23. Numerous vendors will be present for Sustainability Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Rooms A-C. On Friday, the campus is invited to view the movie “Fed Up” from noon to 2 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center. Activities that were scheduled earlier in the week included a Coleman Creek clean-up (Oct. 19); an effort to recycle plastic bags and make reusable bags from T-shirts (Oct. 20); and garden day (Oct. 21).

Sustainability Day set for Oct. 15

��Vlog��ýLR will hold its annual Sustainability Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Diamond Area of the Donaghey Student Center and the courtyard near the DSC. In addition to a vintage fashion show, and featured TED Talks, informational booths and programs sponsored by campus and community organizations will be on display. The event is sponsored by the ��Vlog��ýLR Sustainability Committee, which seeks to inform, educate, and encourage students, faculty, and staff to conserve resources and protect the environment.

In celebration of April’s annual Earth Day events, the ��Vlog��ýLR Sustainability Committee is looking for students who want to give their “take” on what it means to be sustainable through photography. Being sustainable has many implications – economic, social, and environmental- so student photographers are challenged this year to capture that spirit in the images they submit. Whether it is a picture of a renovated house or a factory that has been refurbished into a green space, or anything in between, this contest is for photographers of all skill levels, and creative approaches are encouraged. Most importantly, the committee encourages potential photographers to have fun! Contest guidelines • Must be a ��Vlog��ýLR student • Must submit photo on the ��Vlog��ýLR Facebook sustainability page by midnight Wednesday, April 9 • Photos must be an original work with maximum of two entries allowed per person Judging Criteria • Effectively portrays a dimension of sustainability, either environmental, economic, or social (15 points) • Tells a sustainable story (10 points) • Depicts a clear center of interest (10 points) • Demonstrates photographic quality (10 points) • Facebook feedback (5 points) First and second place awards will be given based on the merit of the photo as determined by the judging rubric. In addition, one prize will be awarded for the photo with the most Facebook likes. The winners will be announced 72 hours after the Facebook online submission deadline. The 2014 judges are Drs. Kevin Cates, Michael DeAngelis, Michael Kleine, Sharonda Lipscomb, Mary Tillman-Boyd, and VaCresha White. Check the ��Vlog��ýLR Sustainability website and for additional information. ��Vlog��ýLR to celebrate Earth Day

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Sustainability Committee invites the campus and surrounding community to go green during its annual celebration of Earth Day in April. The main event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, between the Ottenheimer Library and Student Union B on the ��Vlog��ýLR campus. Other events will occur before and after that date in recognition of Earth Day 2014, officially celebrated in the U.S. on April 22. Live music, a farmer’s market, the Trojan Trailblazer Green Walk, recycled Bikes for Kids, and the ever-popular “The ��Vlog��ýLR Forum” Fashion Show will be part of the April 9 festivities. More than 30 organizations will be involved, and awards will be given to the student group demonstrating the most effort at sustainability and green initiatives. Sodexo Dining Services��will host a photo booth for pictures of guests holding their pledges for the environment. Sodexo will also promote its “Zero out Waster” in the ��Vlog��ýLR Diamond Café to discourage wasting more napkins, utensils or food than necessary. In addition, there will be a Brown Bag Lunch and sustainable movie watch. A recycling drop off point, open from 7:30 a.m. to noon, will be in Parking Lot 15 at the corner of Fair Park and West 28th Street near the ��Vlog��ýLR residential housing area. A tire pressure check will also be held at the same location from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Additional pre- and post-Earth Day activities include:

Sustainability Day set for Oct. 23

Sustainability Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Donaghey Student Center upper concourse at ��Vlog��ýLR.

In addition to informational booths and programs sponsored by campus and community organizations, this event is an opportunity for electronics recycling, including batteries, CDs, and other items of similar size. At 1 p.m., members of the campus family are invited to bring their own compost and walk to the Campus Garden, near the public parking deck facing Fair Park Boulevard. A tour of the garden follows. The event is sponsored by the ��Vlog��ýLR Sustainability Committee, which seeks to inform, educate, and encourage students, faculty, and staff to conserve resources and protect the environment. The Sustainability Committee will also provide water bottles to those interested in signing up for the “Take Back the Tap” program.
