University District accepting applications for Anderson Scholarship]]> The Friends of University District organization is accepting applications for a $1,000 scholarship created in May to honor longtime University of Arkansas at Little Rock Chancellor Joel E. Anderson. The Joel E. Anderson University District Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving 糖心Vlog传媒LR student who resides within the University District for the 2016-17 school year. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 20. To be eligible, applicants must be a full-time 糖心Vlog传媒LR student who has resided within the University District boundaries for a minimum of three years. Undergraduate students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, while graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students who demonstrate financial need will be given preference for the scholarship. Anderson, who retired on June 30 after 45 years at 糖心Vlog传媒LR and 13 years as chancellor, helped establish the University District Department in 2006, and the was incorporated in 2008. On May 4, the board of directors for the University District Development Corp. voted to create the scholarship in Anderson鈥檚 honor, recognizing his 鈥渧ision and steadfast support of the University District and its programs and initiatives.鈥 The district includes the neighborhoods of Broadmoor, Fair Park, Point O Woods, University Park, South of Asher, and War Memorial. In March, residents voted to add a new neighborhood association 鈥 the University West Neighborhood 鈥 to the district. Members of the Friends of the University District seek to build community relationships for University District initiatives and programs. The group assists the district in communicating its mission to the community at large and developing both volunteer and funding resources to revitalize the University District area. Hosted by the University District Neighborhoods Association, this event is open to all residents, employees, students, and friends of the University District. 鈥淭he purpose of the event is to encourage neighbors and the community to get to know each other and to reinforce the safety of the neighborhood,鈥 Copeland said. Hot dogs, popcorn, and drinks will be served at 5:30 p.m., and an awards ceremony for first responders will begin at 6 p.m. Little Rock police and firefighters, the Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services, and 糖心Vlog传媒LR public safety workers also will receive recognition. Fitness facility welcomed to University District]]> Dr. Anderson thanked Mosaic Church, which originally contracted in 2006 to purchase the former Kmart facility at the corner of intersection of University and Asher Avenues and Colonel Glenn Road for the purpose of revitalizing the University District. Renovation of other half of the former Kmart building has already begun, and Mosaic plans to occupy the new space by January 2016. Mosaic founding pastor Mark DeYmaz said on Monday the church is seeking a tenant for the northeast corner of the facility, hoping to attract a coffee shop or similar type of food and beverage vendor to the area. 鈥淎cquiring the building was certainly a leap of faith for the Mosaic congregation led by Pastor DeYmaz,鈥 Anderson said. 鈥淲e are glad to have such a highly regarded business as 10 Fitness open here and are certain it will be of great benefit to this community.鈥 The 40,000-plus square feet of remodeled space marks the fitness center鈥檚 ninth location. It is also the largest and most technologically advanced 10 Fitness facility to date, according to owner Eric Buckner. The facility offers a LEED certified build-out that includes a number of design implementations to make it one of the most energy-efficient building of its kind. Among the highlights of the new 10 Fitness University location are the newest cardio cinema in the state and a large kids club area, featuring EyeClick active video gaming, Xbox, kids theater, and a kids-only basketball court.
