The consortium partners will collaborate on workforce development, research, and innovation to create a strategic industry cluster in emerging technologies that will support national defense and enhance Arkansas as a Cyber Defense State and cybersecurity hub. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock is proud to join the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and the Forge Institute in an effort to scale and leverage resources towards workforce development, research, and innovation in cyber technologies,鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor Christina Drale said. 鈥淭ogether, we are building the future of our state as we pursue the common goal of ensuring national security through strategic and collaborative workforce development, research, and innovation.鈥 The Forge Institute develops capabilities to solve broad challenges in emerging technology, cybersecurity, and national security. Its experienced cyber operators and leadership team are leveraging their extensive national network to promote workforce training and research collaborations by joining forces with the academic resources at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and 糖心Vlog传媒PB. 鈥淭he Consortium for Cyber Innovation is monumental to developing our high-tech workforce and developing new capabilities to prevent, detect, and mitigate emerging technology risks to businesses, including our nation鈥檚 critical infrastructure,鈥 said Lee Watson, CEO of the Forge Institute. 鈥淏oth campuses already have outstanding undergraduate and graduate computer science programs, cybersecurity resources, and world-class faculty. We鈥檙e excited to lend our expertise to this very important endeavor which will help fill the coming 3.4 million job gap.鈥 Cybercrime is a growing threat that is expected to cost the world more than $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, according to Watson. This increase in cyberattacks is expected to open 3.4 cybersecurity positions in the next few years. There are already 1,400 open positions in Arkansas, and more than 467,000 open positions in cybersecurity in the U.S., Watson said. This collaboration expands an existing successful collaboration between 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and Forge Institute. Students who complete the Forge Institute鈥檚 IT/Cyber Fundamentals professional development course can apply to receive three credit hours in 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 recently launched bachelor鈥檚 degree program in cybersecurity. This recognition of learning outside of higher education is a bold step towards how colleges and universities can modernize their curricula to meet the needs of today鈥檚 students and industry. 鈥淲e鈥檙e extremely excited to build this collaboration with Forge Institute,鈥 said Dr. Brian Berry, vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淲e view cybersecurity as an important field of study for our students, and the expertise Forge Institute lends offers a real-world perspective that can鈥檛 be simulated in the classroom.鈥 The CCI builds on existing partnerships among the Forge Institute, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (U of A) that have already resulted in National Security Agency (NSA)-funded academic training and research programs. This includes the GenCyber summer camp for 7-12 graders, the Healthcare Cybersecurity Certification research project, and a new graduate certificate in cybersecurity education. Congressman French Hill said the creation of the CCI is a giant step in making Arkansas more competitive in cyber innovation, and that he is looking forward to following the consortium鈥檚 continued growth and success.

鈥淭he University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff have taken steps to create a nurturing environment to promote computer science and cyber innovation,鈥 Congressman Hill said. 鈥淭his collaboration will take their commitment one step further.鈥 Future research projects will include developing next-generation artificial intelligence capabilities to manage cybersecurity threats to both critical infrastructure and military and national defense networks. Advanced machine learning technologies will increase efficiency and expand near-term industry use of readily-available quantum computing capabilities. The CCI also plans to create a Strategic Initiative Office that will allow the consortium to obtain and manage large-scale federal funding for creating a sustainable network of education and research efforts in emerging technology and national defense. 鈥淎s our state鈥檚 land grant, Historically Black University, 糖心Vlog传媒PB looks to contribute to the CCI鈥檚 strategic initiatives in a number of ways,鈥 糖心Vlog传媒PB Chancellor Laurence Alexander said. 鈥淥ur expectation is that our university鈥檚 priorities of expanding computer education and the cyber workforce will lead to a more diverse industry workforce, reaching many of our underrepresented population. As such, the consortium will help build regional capacity to support economic growth and development across various industry sectors as the state recovers from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.鈥 Industry partners who join the CCI can help in a number of ways, Watson said. They can hire new talent, especially Arkansas graduates, mentor students, bring in interns, help fund student research, and advise educators who are developing classes. David McCoy, principal security analyst, incident response commander, and head of forensics and investigation at Acxiom, a data management, data science, and privacy technology company, represented Acxiom as a founding industry partner. 鈥淚鈥檓 extremely honored to represent Acxiom in this effort to join these different entities together,鈥 McCoy said. 鈥淭he industry has been growing, to say the least, and to the point where you need formal tracks to get into what I do. We are getting into more formal education programs, which is going to be amazing, not only to the state of Arkansas but to the United States. Acxiom is super excited to join into this collaboration across industry鈥檚 public and private sectors sharing information, which is something we all need to do because the threats are real.鈥 Globally, cybersecurity has become a trillion dollar industry with career opportunities open to thousands of Arkansans. Because of the state鈥檚 deep experience with data management, logistics, fintech, and other data-driven industries, Arkansas is well positioned to become a rallying point for the nation鈥檚 cybersecurity efforts. These opportunities produce good paying jobs for Arkansans. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock is committed to growing a talented workforce of highly skilled cyber professionals in Central Arkansas,鈥 Drale said. 鈥淒irectly related to that effort is the applied research of our nationally recognized faculty in cybersecurity, including research on social media threats by our Collaboratorium for Social Media and Online Behavioral Studies. This collaboration sets the stage for additional partnerships and initiatives, and that will establish Arkansas as a national leader in cybersecurity and related emerging technologies.鈥漖]>

Montague was recognized as the U.S. Navy鈥檚 real-life 鈥淗idden Figure鈥 during naval events in Washington, D.C. and Virginia and on the Feb. 20, 2017, live episode of 鈥淕ood Morning America.鈥 In the last years of her life, Raye Montague decided to write the long-awaited book with her son, Dr. David Montague, executive director of online learning and faculty mentoring as well as a professor of criminal justice at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and co-author, Paige Bowers. Bowers brought to the table the experience of a published author. She wrote 鈥淭he General鈥檚 Niece: The Little-Known de Gaulle Who Fought to Free Occupied France鈥 and is a nationally published news and features writer. Just as the trio had finished a book proposal and was about to secure a publisher, Raye Montague passed away in October 2018 at the age of 83. One of the last promises David Montague made his mother was to finish her book. That book, 鈥,鈥 will be published Jan. 12, 2021, by Chicago Review Press Inc.
Paige Bowers, author of 鈥淭he General鈥檚 Niece: The Little-Known de Gaulle Who Fought to Free Occupied France," co-wrote "Overnight Code" with David Montague.

Paige Bowers, author of 鈥淭he General鈥檚 Niece: The Little-Known de Gaulle Who Fought to Free Occupied France,” co-wrote “Overnight Code” with David Montague.

鈥淓ven though my mother couldn鈥檛 stay for the whole process, she was able to contribute a lot to the book,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淲hen she was in hospice, I promised her that I would finish the book. I鈥檓 really excited about it. It gives us a chance to give her story, which is much broader than her amazing career. It also talks about encouragement for so many types of people and overcoming obstacles against impossible odds.鈥 听鈥淥vernight Code鈥 is equal parts coming-of-age tale, civil rights history, and reflection on the power of education. The 240-page book is described as a tale about persistence and perseverance when the odds against you seem insurmountable. 鈥淲e believe there is so much in this book for so many people,鈥 Bowers said. 鈥淵es, it is a story about a woman with a formidable life who became a very gifted engineer just through her sheer determination and through often teaching herself computer science and coding when they were still in infancy. But there is also a huge takeaway about resilience, about not giving up if you have a setback or if something is blocking your way to success.鈥 Raye Montague earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff at a time when the engineering school at the University of Arkansas did not accept minorities. She began her career with the U.S. Navy in 1956. She held a civilian equivalent rank of captain and was the Navy鈥檚 first female program manager of ships. Among many other honors, she was awarded the U.S. Navy鈥檚 Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1972, the Navy鈥檚 third-highest honorary award. She was also nominated for the Federal Woman of the Year Award the same year. After her 33-year naval career, Raye Montague retired in 1990 and was presented with a flag that had flown over the nation鈥檚 capital in her honor. She was passionate about highlighting the value of education and encouraging girls to get involved in STEM education, receiving many awards and commendations over the years for volunteering with youth. After returning to Arkansas in 2006, she spent many years as a mentor, volunteer, motivational speaker, and dedicated mother and grandmother in Little Rock. Montague mentored prison inmates through 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 community re-entry program and was honored with the 10th Annual Fribourgh Award in 2019. Beyond all of Raye Montague鈥檚 admirable achievements, Bowers described the book as a story about the power of a mother鈥檚 love across generations.

“Overnight Code” will be released Jan. 12.

鈥淩aye鈥檚 mother was the foundation that helped her become the woman she was meant to be, and Raye鈥檚 love for David helped him become the Dr. Montague that we know,鈥 Bowers said. 鈥淒avid has taken the baton from his mother. He continues to encourage people to stay in school. He is doing her proud by continuing this outreach. That is a testament to her and a testament to him.鈥 During the process of researching, conducting interviews, and writing the book, David Montague discovered hidden depths about his mother. 鈥淚 learned my mom was more of a firecracker than I ever thought her to be. People came at her from every direction, but she didn鈥檛 let that stop her,鈥 David Montague said. 鈥淎fter she passed, there were people who talked about how much she had done to open doors for them. Until recently, they had no clue that she had done all these things in the Navy. That is something I have tried to do as a faculty member and administrator and that is something that I learned from her. Even when she was struggling in hospice, she was trying to encourage people in those facilities to go to school and so many people have come to school at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and beyond because of her.鈥 鈥淥vernight Code鈥 is widely available for pre-order online, at your , or via the publisher鈥檚 website at .]]>

State鈥檚 Greek Life leaders gather to discuss standards]]> Leaders from Arkansas鈥檚 colleges and universities gathered at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Wednesday, Jan. 9, for the first Arkansas Statewide Greek Life Symposium to discuss ways to minimize risks and increase safety within sororities and fraternities at their respective campuses.

The event was organized jointly by the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and Arkansas State University as a way to share information about best practices for improving safety. Eighty-eight people, including students and employees who work with Greek Life, attended. Representatives from Arkansas State University, University of Arkansas, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, Arkansas Tech University, and University of Arkansas at Monticello attended.

The attendees worked in small groups to talk candidly about risks and ways to mitigate risks.

鈥淚 hope this will be a model for future discussions,” 糖心Vlog传媒 Chancellor Joseph Steinmetz told the crowd. “We are each other’s best resources. It behooves us to communicate, share, and work together to identify issues, ideally before they happen on our campus.”

Two national experts spoke at the symposium, including Dave Westol, a former trial lawyer and now a national consultant to sororities and fraternities, and former Philander Smith College president Walter Kimbrough, who chaired a commission on hazing awareness and prevention for the North American Interfraternity Conference. Kimbrough is also the author of 鈥淏lack Greek 101: The Culture, Customs and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities鈥 and is frequently called on as an expert in legal cases involving fraternities.

Kimbrough pointed to several high-profile students deaths as proof that more awareness and prevention efforts are needed. The culture of hazing often starts in middle school and high school, he said, citing a report that found that half of college students had experienced some form of hazing before they got to college. Of those, 95 percent did not report the event.

In Louisiana, where Kimbrough serves as president of Dillard University, lawmakers passed anti-hazing legislation that affects public and private universities.

Kimbrough said organizational change must start with students but that universities must ensure their policies create an environment that encourages students to speak up about problems.

Westol said he sees several trends with sororities and fraternities nationwide, including mostly flat recruitment, higher attrition rate among students who join, and the formation of more multicultural groups, especially among the Asian, Latina/Latino, and Native American populations.

Westol said some chapters have replaced the practice of pledging with immediate initiation, and other Greeks organizations have moved to substance-free housing.

Here, students competed as individuals, working through a timed, 15 question calculus exam without the use of calculators or phones. Following the competition, students enjoyed a lunch of fresh pizza and refreshments while grooving to the sounds of 鈥淲e Few,鈥 a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock student band composed of drummer, Seraphim Lawhorn; guitarist, Dallas Smith; and standing base guitarist, Jordan Anderson. Once students were refueled and refreshed, they huddled into their groups for the main event – Math Jeopardy. Each team was given an instrument, such as a bell, rattle, symbol, or drumsticks, for sounding off and letting the game鈥檚 orchestrator know they had an answer. As the reigning champs, 糖心Vlog传媒PB selected the first question. As the game took off, the anticipation among the students grew. While some questions caused silence to fall upon the room as students penciled their calculations, others garnered an almost immediate response, showcasing the wit and intelligence of the math whizzes. Finally, the game came to an end and 糖心Vlog传媒PB once again took home the title of the winning team. This group was awarded a $200 cash prize to go toward its math club.
