The University of Arkansas System was awarded a three-year $900,000 CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to boost the state’s workforce recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19. Nine ��Vlog��ý System institutions will collaborate on the project, led by the Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, to collect and analyze statewide workforce data and use outcomes to provide existing and bolstered education and training efforts through all seven of the ��Vlog��ý System’s two-year colleges, along with two colleges of technology at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (��Vlog��ýM). “This project is groundbreaking on many levels, especially in the showcase of power that’s possible by the ��Vlog��ý System harnessing resources in a collaborative and innovative fashion for the greater good,” said Chris Thomason, vice president for planning and development for the ��Vlog��ý System. “But most important is the positive impact this project will have on those adversely affected by the unprecedented disruption of the economy and the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic. By identifying the specific needs of Arkansas communities and matching those with workforce training being offered by the ��Vlog��ý System’s seven two-year colleges and colleges of technology, we are truly promoting the ��Vlog��ý System’s mission of serving and providing educational and professional opportunities for all Arkansans.” The $900,000 EDA grant, which will be matched with $225,000 of local investment, will fund the development of a workforce training strategy with a special emphasis on technological skills that boosts community recovery efforts in Pulaski County and eventually across the state. It also enables the creation of the ��Vlog��ý System Workforce Response and Training Center (��Vlog��ý-WRTC), which will consist of a consortium of ��Vlog��ý System entities aligned to maximize existing training efforts that will be deployed in a data-driven, collaborative format. The project’s goal is to focus on identifying workforce populations most impacted by the pandemic through data, and then aligning skills training opportunities for retraining and reemployment to support community pandemic recovery. “Providing the tools and resources that communities need to recover from the economic impact of COVID-19 is a top priority for EDA,” said Dennis Alvord, acting assistant secretary of commerce for economic development. “By working through the University of Arkansas System and its array of diverse colleges and universities across the state, this project checks all of the boxes on our goals to begin moving the country out of this pandemic and into recovery.” AEDI will operate as the lead data gathering and analyst hub, and ��Vlog��ý-WRTC will utilize the comprehensive, historical documentation of the impact of COVID-19 on the state. With the initial focus being Pulaski County, the effort will then spread statewide to develop workforce training strategies that promote expedited economic recovery and sustained growth. Once AEDI identifies the high-demand employer workforce needs, the full portfolio of existing training and credential programs across the entire ��Vlog��ý System two-year institutions and at ��Vlog��ýM’s colleges of technology will be matched to best meet the workforce training need. “AEDI will foster the development of an industry training alliance comprised of regional employers and ��Vlog��ý-WRTC institutions to identify critical economic infrastructure needs to sustain and grow workforce training programs for the region,” said Jim Youngquist,��executive director of AEDI at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. “Special emphasis will be placed on technology and training simulators that will support the success of the centralized training model while ensuring that delivery of training will not be disrupted by future pandemic events.” Youngquist said as the home of the Arkansas State Data Center, AEDI and its existing emphasis on supporting economic research data analysis positions his agency perfectly to lead the collaborative ��Vlog��ý System effort. “W�� will��be developing a database that will track all aspects of identifying skill sets and jobs available for the underemployed, unemployed and hard-to-employ, all within the corridors of Little Rock where lower per-capita income and unemployment exists,” he said. “Once the model is designed, implemented and successful, we will use AEDI’s statewide data to replicate regional training models across Arkansas to have the same impact. Taggard Receives Young Professional in Procurement Award

Desiree Taggard, director of Procurement Services at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has received the 2020 Young Professional in Procurement Award from the National Association of Educational Procurement (NAEP). “It was flattering to receive such a huge honor,” Taggard said. “I want people to look at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock as a beacon of light for higher education buying in Arkansas. We are seeing the payout from four years of continuing improvement.” The Young Professional in Procurement Award recognizes outstanding young procurement professionals for their contributions to their institutions, the higher education community, NAEP, and the procurement profession. “W�� value Desiree‘s service, hard work, and dedication to our organization,” said NAEP President Travis Ball. Taggard joined ��Vlog��ý Little Rock as assistant director of Procurement Services in 2016 after previously working for the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. She was promoted to director of Procurement Services in 2018. She was nominated for the award by her team in Procurement. “Desiree has led her Procurement Services team by example, proving that hard work and dedication are the keys to success,” said Mary Worthy, assistant director of card services. “Procurement Services was restructured under Deisree’s leadership for the betterment of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. She saw the need to have two teams serve our campus more efficiently, and they are the expense and procurement team.” Over the past two years, Taggard has partnered with other financial leaders in the University of Arkansas System to design, implement, and manage the system’s transition from Banner to Workday. “My team is what makes me successful in procurement,” Taggard said. “I have an amazing team who supports me, and I would never have been able to make it through the implementation of Workday and all the other changes over the past few years if I didn’t have such an amazing team that allows me to focus on the needs of the campus. We all work well together, and that’s what makes me successful.” Keifran Melvin, travel administrator in Procurement Services, said that Taggard has been a strong leader and given the team a voice while implementing many advancements in Procurement.�� “Desiree has not only shaped the way people think when it comes to everyday life, but she has also shaped the way they think when it comes to purchasing,” Melvin said. “W�� have had the most change this year moving from a complete paper process, to a partially electronic process, and now to a fully electronic process. She also allowed our expertise in our fields of Procurement to grow by allowing our team to sit in on the writing and organization of our new procedures and policy updates.” Taggard has a bachelor’s degree in music and minor in accounting from Henderson State University and is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in business at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. �� Taggard lives in Jacksonville with her husband, Michael, and children, Derek, a sophomore civil engineering major at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, Leah, and Chase.

The year 2020 was a year unlike any other, where the University of Arkansas at Little Rock faced major challenges that included a global pandemic that has redefined the education landscape.�� “Throughout the year, we faced all of these challenges with determination and unprecedented levels of collaboration and collegiality no matter how exhausted we were,” Chancellor Christina Drale said during the Jan. 28 Board of Trustees meeting for the University of Arkansas. “That’s not to say there weren’t disagreements, but we rose above all of that to get the job done and I am very, very proud of the work of our campus community at all levels.” Last fall, Drale outlined four priorities that highlight how ��Vlog��ý Little Rock serves a diverse student body, offers degrees that meet the demand for professional and advanced level preparation in areas of critical need, and applies the university’s expertise and resources to public concerns and community wellbeing. “I called upon our campus community to remember our core mission and focus on our institutional priorities in all that we do,” she said.�� Vlog��ý Little Rock has risen to the occasion to implement these efforts during this challenging time. The university has responded to the needs of the community and is meeting our obligation to support a diverse campus with programs that lead to careers for Arkansans.�� Priority 1: Enhancing access to higher education and enhancing student success ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has made its first priority to meet the needs of new and future students by increasing access to higher education and enhancing student success. Among the ways that ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is meeting the challenges of the campus community include the creation of the CARE Team in 2020. This highly capable team of dedicated student advocates includes licensed social workers and other support specialists that assist students with a wide range of personal challenges that might otherwise derail them in their pursuit of a college degree. Through generous donations that drive student success initiatives, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has created a fully endowed Office of Student Retention that provides proactive support for students through academic coaching, mentoring, crisis intervention, and life-skills training. Among other student success initiatives, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is reinvesting in the Student Experience Center with a newly reconstituted Multicultural Center. With these new developments in student success initiatives, the university’s freshman retention rate has improved from 64 percent in fall 2019 to 74 percent in the fall 2020 semester, an increase of 10 percentage points.�� With a goal of enhancing access to higher education, the university has improved the recruitment, admissions, and financial aid infrastructure to become more efficient, effective, and data driven.�� “W�� enhance access through broadening financial assistance, better outreach across different populations, and by creating a more welcoming and inclusive learning environment,” Drale said. “W�� enhance student success by ensuring the high quality of our instruction, and by building a sustainable student support infrastructure that is timely, responsive, and effective.” Priority 2: To develop, maintain, and strengthen the right mix of liberal arts and pre-professional undergraduate and graduate programs that will prepare our students for viable career paths or career enhancements With priority two, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has invested in meeting the needs of the community by supporting a diverse campus with programs that lead to careers for Arkansans and meet the state’s growing business and industry needs. During 2020, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock held a series of focus groups with business and community leaders to understand their knowledge of the university and how ��Vlog��ý Little Rock can help meet the needs of the community. Feedback from community members was used in the academic planning process. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is placing an emphasis on career connection with the launch of a new Career Center this spring while creating partnerships with business, industry, government, and community partners to develop high-quality programs and to provide unique applied experiences that give students an advantage in their post-graduation endeavors. To ensure that students are getting the best education possible, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is investing in more professional development for faculty members. “W�� have long supported our faculty-led Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence,” Drale said. “In recent years, we have been able to expand their capacity, and we now have an endowment for that unit. We are also supporting innovative training opportunities such as the Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching that promotes student-centered teaching practices.” Priority 3: To develop, maintain, and strengthen a research and creative work portfolio appropriate to our Carnegie status and one that applies our talent and expertise to real life issues As an urban research university, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is dedicated to addressing public concerns through innovative research and providing support and resources for the university’s researchers. “For universities like ours, research is a way to engage our communities to develop new products, solve urgent problems, and contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of our society,” Drale said. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has improved supporting grants and contracts through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, is providing opportunities for professional development, incentives for pilot projects, and alternative funding sources for both sponsored and unsponsored research. Since students play a key role in research projects, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock promotes student researchers through the Signature Experience Program and other research mentoring programs. With a goal of developing more resources to promote research, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has launched a marketing campaign to profile research at the university. This campaign highlights and encourages student involvement in research. Priority 4: To promote community engagement through our educational programs, our research and public service programs, and through Trojan Athletics. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is fulfilling its public service mission by promoting community engagement through education, research, and public service programs. Community engagement represents a critical component of educating students. “Our academic programs work with community partners who serve as clients for student projects, as internship and clinical placement providers, as sources of mentorship, and as investors in our educational infrastructure,” Drale said. “Our public service units such as our public radio stations and Children International engage our community constituents very directly and also provide internship opportunities for our students that help keep them engaged and successful.” ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s Athletics program also demonstrates how student success and community engagement come together. “Our Trojan Athletics program is a model of increasing educational access and enhancing student success,” Drale said. “Athletic scholarships give many students an opportunity to attend college they might not have otherwise, and the mentoring and academic support they get as part of their program helps them to be very successful students, second only to our honors students in the Donaghey Scholars Program in average GPA. At the same time, Trojan Athletics is the primary point of contact for many of our local community members and serves as an important reflection of our identity.” This variety of community service activities and partnerships ensures that ��Vlog��ý Little Rock maintains a strong connection with the community. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is partnering with the City of Little Rock on the Asher Avenue redevelopment project that will include a renovation of University Plaza. “W�� are at the beginning of this effort, but we have assembled committees made up of campus and community partners who are exploring the possibilities of this development,” Drale said. “They will canvas the needs and wishes of students, neighbors, faculty, and other constituents to help us formulate a new vision for this important gateway into our campus.” In her conclusion, Drale reiterated that times of crisis constitute an opportunity to reflect on what is important and focus on what is lasting. “In spite of our considerable challenges this past year, we have not lost sight of what is important and eternal,” she said. “And although we still have much work to do, I believe the path forward is clear.” You can read Chancellor Drale’s full speech here.

Smith named to ��Vlog��ý System Task Force on Racial Equity

Kristi Smith, senior director of development and interim director of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association, has been named to the University of Arkansas System Task Force on Racial Equity.�� Vlog��ý System President Dr. Donald Bobbitt announced a task force of 14 members who will consider issues around racial equity at the campuses, divisions, and units within the ��Vlog��ý System. “Discussions and the eventual actions regarding racial diversity are long overdue,” Smith said. “I look forward to exploring these issues with the other members of this task force. I am thankful for the appointment to do this very important work.”�� The ��Vlog��ý System Task Force on Racial Equity is the result of a proposal made by John Goodson, chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas, at a special meeting of the board on June 17, when he announced plans to appoint a task force to address racial injustice and promote equitable practices within the system.�� “The past several weeks in our country have brought to light the vital need for all institutions to increase efforts to combat racial injustice,” Goodson told Trustees and those attending the virtual special meeting. “Many people of color have spoken out, including many constituents of the ��Vlog��ý System, about issues they face in their daily lives that we should all be concerned about.” Bobbitt said the task force is a welcomed addition to many efforts already underway at the system’s campuses, divisions, and units to address issues of racial equity. “There is an expectation from my office and the Board of Trustees that faculty, students, staff, and visitors to our campuses should all be treated with respect and presented with an equitable environment to pursue their educational and scholarly goals,” Bobbitt said. “This is a well-respected and accomplished group, and I look forward to the ��Vlog��ý System benefitting from its work immediately and well into the future.” Smith is a two-time graduate of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. The North Little Rock native began her undergraduate studies as a Donaghey Scholar, which enabled her to spend time abroad in Strasbourg, France. She graduated magna cum laude and worked as a graduate assistant in the Arkansas Institute of Government while she pursued her master’s degree in public administration. While pursuing a career in pharmaceutical sales, Smith served two terms on the Alumni Board of Directors helping to re-establish the association’s mission that led to increased scholarship support for students. She is an active member of the Beta Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Since joining the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni and Development staff in 2016, Smith has taken the lead on several key philanthropic initiatives, including the Chancellor’s Circle and the Foundation Fund Board of Directors, and she is heavily involved in campaign planning.��

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff have created a 4+3 pipeline program to help undergraduate students earn a law degree. “Both schools have been working for several years to get this program in place,” said Bowen Dean Theresa Beiner. “Many of Bowen’s graduates are also ��Vlog��ýPB alumni. This program honors their paths to law school and paves the way for a long-term relationship with ��Vlog��ýPB and its students.” This new partnership recognizes ��Vlog��ýPB’s commitment to preparing students who aspire to law school and provides guaranteed acceptance to Bowen for ��Vlog��ýPB graduates who meet specific criteria. “Bowen consistently attracts quality applicants,” said Assistant Dean of Admissions Matthew Kerns. “With competition to enter the law school increasing, these programs reinforce our commitment to ��Vlog��ýPB students and the citizens of Arkansas and ensure that highly motivated graduates have spots at the law school.” The signing took place on the ��Vlog��ýPB campus on Dec. 3 and was attended by several students who took time away from their studies to come learn more about the program and to meet Dean Beiner and Dean Kerns.�� “This is going to be something great for our students to aspire to,” said Henry Brooks IV, instructor and program coordinator for the Political Science program at ��Vlog��ýPB. “W�� already have students who are interested in the Bowen School of Law.”�� Gabrielle Williams, a junior political science major at ��Vlog��ýPB, shared her excitement about the partnership and what it could mean for her legal career. “This is a stepping stone for students like me and the beginning of something great,” Williams said. ��Vlog��ýPB graduates qualify for the 4+3 program if they earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4; scored a 154 or above on the LSAT; and have no character and fitness issues that would disqualify them from being admitted to the bar. Prospective students can apply to the law school through lsac.org. Students must apply to Bowen and satisfactorily complete all admissions requirements. “The 4+3 pipeline program between ��Vlog��ýPB and the Bowen School of Law will allow current ��Vlog��ýPB students pursuing a bachelor’s of science degree in political science to seamlessly pursue a law degree,” said Dr. Robert Carr Jr., provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at ��Vlog��ýPB. “The beauty of this program is that it will set reasonable admissions requirements that students understand from day one. This is great for our students, ��Vlog��ýPB, the Bowen School of Law, and the state of Arkansas.” In addition to this program and other scholarship opportunities, Bowen offers a 25 percent tuition scholarship to accepted students who earned a bachelor’s degree from an historically black college or university in Arkansas. Bowen prepares students for a variety of careers, including roles as attorneys, judges, or other public service leadership positions. Associate general counsel named ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s new head of human resources

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Chancellor Christina Drale has announced the appointment of Mandy Hull, associate general counsel for the University of Arkansas System, as associate vice chancellor of human resources and policy advisor to the chancellor, effective Nov. 11.�� “As part of the Office of General Counsel, I have developed so much admiration and respect for the incredible work being done by faculty and staff here at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Hull said. “I’m honored that Chancellor Drale has given me this opportunity to serve the campus community, and I look forward to joining my friends and colleagues in the Department of Human Resources.” Hull has served as ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s designated legal counsel for the past eight years. She has experience in employment law and served as vice president of human resources at Alltel Communications in both Charlotte, N. C., and in Little Rock. She also served as director of human resources for a year at Arkansas State University-Beebe before becoming an assistant attorney general for the state of Arkansas from 2008 to 2011. “I am very pleased that Mandy has agreed to accept this important leadership role as the campus focuses on institutional effectiveness,” Drale said. “In addition to having a central role in launching Workday, our new ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, the Human Resources department continues to serve as critical business unit in helping us recruit and retain excellent employees at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock.”

The Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas today unanimously accepted ��Vlog��ý System President Dr. Donald R. Bobbitt’s recommendation to name Christina Drale, Ph.D., chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Bobbitt previously named Drale acting chancellor following the resignation of former Chancellor Dr. Andrew Rogerson that went into effect on Sept. 1. The Board voted to approve Bobbitt’s recommendation to hire Drale as permanent chancellor at its regularly scheduled meeting today at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

“I’m very pleased to have been given the confidence and support from Dr. Bobbitt and the Trustees to help guide ��Vlog��ý Little Rock into a new era of improvement in many areas on campus,” Drale said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to bring the campus and the community together and work with our students, faculty, staff and alumni to move ��Vlog��ý Little Rock forward in the most efficient and effective ways possible. I appreciate the supportive reception I’ve gotten so far on campus and in the community, and I look forward to helping make this institution all it can be.”

Drale has served as interim executive vice chancellor and provost at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock since October 2018. She previously served as associate vice chancellor for faculty relations and administration. She earned a doctorate degree in sociology, a Master of Arts in sociology, and a Bachelor of Arts in communications, all from the University of California, San Diego.

“Dr. Drale is widely respected on campus and is equipped with the necessary skillset to guide ��Vlog��ý Little Rock through the challenges it currently faces and help solidify its unique standing as a comprehensive metropolitan university serving our Capital City and the entire state,” Bobbitt said. “I appreciate her stepping in recently to accept the challenge as acting chancellor and look forward to working with her and supporting her efforts to improve the institution.”

The Board authorized Bobbitt to enter into a two-year employment agreement with Drale, which will be executed in the coming days. Drale will also be charged with identifying a new executive vice chancellor and provost to fill her previous position.

Bobbitt said he will continue visiting with ��Vlog��ý Little Rock internal and external stakeholders leading up to the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas on Sept. 12-13. “In her time in the provost position, Dr. Drale has shown to be a very capable leader and I am grateful to her for stepping up to serve ��Vlog��ý Little Rock as acting chancellor,” Bobbitt said. “She has my full confidence and support as we work through a long-term plan for the institution.” Drale previously served as associate vice chancellor for faculty relations and administration. University of Arkansas at Little Rock Chancellor Dr. Andrew Rogerson today announced that he will step down from the position, effective Sept. 1, after three years serving in the role. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as chancellor of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Rogerson said. “While the institution faces a number of challenges, I have been confident that the university can rebound and continue to serve its unique mission as a comprehensive, urban research university. However, it has become clear that it would be best for me to step aside and allow new leadership to determine the best path forward toward that goal. My wife Janessa and I will always pull for ��Vlog��ý Little Rock and its students, faculty and staff to be successful in the future.” Rogerson’s resignation was accepted by ��Vlog��ý System President Dr. Donald R. Bobbitt. “I want to thank Andrew and Janessa for their service to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock these past three years,” Bobbitt said. “Andrew made positive strides strengthening the institution’s relationship with the Little Rock community during his tenure, and he and Janessa will leave a lasting impact in many areas, including increasing fundraising support, improving the campus grounds and focusing more energy on the arts. Renovations begin on ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Physics and Astronomy Building

The Physics and Astronomy Building at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is getting a facelift.�� Renovations on the 50-year-old building began at the beginning of February and will be completed by Aug. 15, just in time for the fall 2018 semester. During the renovations, Department of Physics and Astronomy facilities have been moved, and courses will be taught in the Engineering Technology and Science Building and the Fine Arts Building. “The renovation of the Physics Building is an exciting project for the university that will give the students, faculty, and staff a wonderful setting to learn and grow,” said Tom Clifton, dean of the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences. “W�� are all looking forward to the completion of the project, which will bring the building in line with its original design by Architect Dieterich Neyland in brutalist architecture.” Renovations will include a complete remodeling of the building’s interior as well as a new roof. Some exterior additions that were made to the building over the years will be removed so that the building can be brought back to its original design. The building’s exterior will be cleaned and painted to more closely match the exterior of Ottenheimer Library. The building was erected in 1967 and last renovated in 1975. Ginocchio, Cromwell, Carter and Neyland served as the architect engineer, while the contractor was G.W. May Construction Company. The project is funded through a $7.5 million bond approved by the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees during its May 2017 meeting. The bond covers capital improvement projects at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, including the renovations to the physics building as well as new roofs for the Donaghey Student Center and University Plaza.
