Austin Herndon Discovers Calling to Teach Through Hands-On Experience
When Austin Herndon started college, teaching wasn鈥檛 part of his plan. But after gaining real-world experience in the classroom through 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 teacher residency program, he found his purpose.
鈥淢y internship time out here at Fountain Lake Middle School with Michael Carey in eighth grade social studies solidified to me that this is what I want to do with my life,鈥� said Herndon, a Benton native who will graduate with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in middle childhood education and a minor in history on May 17.
Herndon, who completed his degree as an online student, chose 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for its flexibility and accessibility.
鈥淚 chose 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock due to the accessibility of the education program,鈥� he said. 鈥淏eing a fully off-site student, this was one of the only schools that offered what I needed.鈥�
Now, he鈥檚 preparing to start his career in the classroom and is awaiting final approval for a position as a middle school teacher in Arkansas.
鈥淚 plan to go to work!鈥� he said. 鈥淚 feel absolutely outstanding about graduating!鈥�
Herndon credits the teacher residency program and the support of his professors for giving him the tools to succeed.
鈥淚t prepared me extensively,鈥� Herndon said. 鈥淲hether it be through coursework or the exposure you get through the internship process, I truly believe after completing this program, I will be a successful educator here in Arkansas.鈥�
He especially appreciated the guidance of two faculty members who supported him throughout his time in the program.
鈥淢y favorite professors/mentors would have to be Dr. Lundon Pinneo and Dr. Jessica Mashburn,鈥� Herndon said. 鈥淭hey have been so influential, helpful, and gracious to me over these last two years. They have truly prepared me to be an educator, and for that I am grateful.鈥�
As he looks ahead to life after college, Herndon offers a piece of advice to future students: 鈥淓njoy the process.鈥�
