The School of Art and Design welcomes Carly Machen鈥檚 MA Thesis Photography Exhibition, 鈥淭his is What it Feels Like.鈥 The exhibition will be in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design until April 21, and it is free and open to the public.

Machen鈥檚 artist talk will be held on Thursday, April 4, from 6-7 p.m. in Lecture Room 101 in the Windgate Center of Art and Design, and a reception will follow.

Working toward her Master of Arts with a concentration in visual art, Machen is a student in the School of Art and Design. Her exhibition features 16 photographs taken by Machen herself.

鈥淚n these theatrical scenes, I incorporate myself and the ephemera I am drawn to such as old dolls, decaying nature, and broken mannequins,鈥 Machen said in her artist statement. 鈥淢any of these items hold symbolic power, functioning as objects do in Baroque Dutch Vanitas paintings.鈥

Her statement closes with a reflection on the themes of her work: 鈥淭hriving and rotting, hope and loss, isolation and connection: these are integral for me in my life-long journey of self-exploration. Through my work, I am able to shine a light on the intricate web of emotions and complex layers of existence.鈥

You can visit Machen鈥檚 exhibition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. The gallery is closed on university holidays.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Art Gallery will open its 2024 season with two exhibitions featuring great examples of illustration from Arkansas-based artists as well as selected works from the Goodspeed Collection.

The first exhibition, 鈥淚llustration: Art That Works,鈥 will be on display in the Brad Cushman Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from Jan. 17 to Feb. 18. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Windgate Center.

鈥淚llustration, like graphic design, is looked upon as a 鈥榩ractical arts鈥 degree because, along with freelance work being common to both fields, illustrators can seek employment with newspapers and magazine publishers, can work in the gaming industry, in animation, as comic book and graphic novel illustrations, and as concept artist and production designers,鈥 said Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director and curator. 鈥淚llustrators work digitally and in more traditional media like painting and drawing, but also move between digital and traditional media. In this exhibition, Arkansas-based illustrators who work in a variety of media and in equally varied employment are brought together to represent what is possible in the field of Illustration.鈥

Artists whose work will be displayed in the exhibition include Robert Bean, Nikki Dawes, Sean Fitzgibbon, Dusty Higgins, Layet Johnson, Kirk Montgomery, Sally Nixon, Michele Noiset, David O’Brien, Kasten Searles, and Ricky Sikes.

In the second exhibition, a group of artwork from the personal collection of Henry Goodspeed, a retired financial advisor living in Little Rock, will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center from Jan. 17 to March 3. A reception for the exhibition, 鈥淕oodspeed Collection: Stories,鈥 will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Windgate Center. The exhibition will include examples of photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking, and fiber works.

鈥淭his collection is an idiosyncratic reflection, a love for art, and an appreciation for art that spans media, style, and eras,鈥 Larson said. 鈥淓ach artwork has a story about how it came to be in Henry鈥檚 collection or has a story which is an integral aspect of the artwork itself.鈥

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Galleries in the Windgate Center are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. 鈥 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

For more information on these upcoming exhibitions, contact Larson at 501-916-5104 or nglarson@ualr.edu.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a solo exhibit for Annika Wade, the 2022-23 recipient of the Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Scholarship, beginning Monday, May 22.

Leslye Shellam, the daughter of Linda Blaine Flake and L. Dickson Flake, created the scholarship in 2021 to honor her mother, who was an artist. The scholarship recipient also has the opportunity to feature their work in a solo exhibit at the Windgate Center of Art and Design.

The exhibit, 鈥淎nnika Wade: Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Art Student Scholarship Exhibition,鈥 will be on display from May 22 to June 14 in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design.

A reception will be held for the exhibit from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, in the Taylor/Mourning Lobby in the Windgate Center.

The exhibit will include paintings that are a continuation of Wade鈥檚 Bachelor of Fine Arts painting project.

鈥淢y work is an unraveling of historical and cultural aspects of previous generations and how they influence today,鈥 Wade said. 鈥淲hile exploring the societal restrictions that have impacted my family, I gained a better understanding of the patterns I inherited.鈥

The exhibit is an exploration of Wade鈥檚 family and the inherited patterns that are shared through different generations.

鈥淏ecause it is a personal journey, telling individual stories became important to me,鈥 Wade said. 鈥淭aking a nostalgic approach in some of my pieces, I have manipulated pictures of the same person, at different ages, to create double exposures that compress time. This highlights the pathways and patterns of each person throughout their life and gives insight into how they passed these patterns down.鈥

The exhibit is free and open to the public. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director and curator, at 501-916-5104 or nglarson@ualr.edu.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Art Gallery will host a thesis exhibition for graduate student Jordan Saxion from April 17 to May 14 in the Windgate Center of Art and Design.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be shown in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center. The exhibit will feature 12 charcoal drawings that explore the characteristics of trees as well as their response to their environment and interdependence on each other.

Saxion will present her thesis presentation at 6 p.m. Friday, April 21, in the Windgate Center Room 101. A reception for the artist will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. April 21 in the Taylor/Mourning Lobby.

鈥淎 tree does not choose its habitat but must adapt to the location it is planted or where its seed settles organically,鈥 Saxion said. 鈥淭his adaptation leads to resilience against the threat of humans and nature, which reveals a process that requires entire communities of forests to support each other to survive dangerous conditions.鈥

Saxion is set to graduate in May with a master鈥檚 degree in visual art. Formerly an architectural major, Saxion decided to change her major when she was a freshman and has been pursuing art ever since.

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact 501-916-5104 or email Nathan Larson, interim gallery director, at nglarson@ualr.edu.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a new exhibit featuring photographs made using historical printing techniques created in the 1800s, called gum bichromate printing and cyanotype.

The exhibit, 鈥淎pophenia,鈥 will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from March 13 to April 8. A reception will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Taylor/Mourning Lobby on the first floor of the Windgate Center.

Joli Livaudais is an associate professor and head of the Photography program in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Art and Design. Livaudais created the featured works during the Fall 2021 semester by putting samples of insects, plants, and old film negatives under the microscope, photographing them, and pairing them together to make a series of diptychs.

鈥淩eminiscent of the 19th-century alchemists, who studied nature in search of ways to purify and transform the spirit, I use a microscope and camera as my tools,鈥 Livaudais said. 鈥淭he chemical processes alter color, value, and texture in response to the hand and will of the maker, transforming the final image. It does not escape me that perhaps my search has uncovered hidden unity, or perhaps my desire has created it where none truly exists.鈥

This photograph, "Sunflower Spine," will be on display in the 鈥淎pophenia" exhibit.

Livaudais received her bachelor鈥檚 degree and master鈥檚 degree in experimental psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington and her Master of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. Her fine art photography explores both historical photographic processes and contemporary alternative methods, including gum bichromate printing, photo sculpture and installation, and incorporates her interest in both psychology and spirituality.

Her artwork has been exhibited in the 鈥淧aper Routes – Women to Watch 2020鈥 exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was also featured as an artist in Christina Anderson鈥檚 two-part book, 鈥淕um Printing: A Step-By-Step Manual, Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice.鈥

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a new exhibit inspired by an artist鈥檚 reaction to the COVID 19 pandemic on a personal and professional level.

The new exhibit, 鈥淩obert Bean: Figure Drawing On and Off Screen,鈥 will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery on the first floor of the Windgate Center of Art and Design at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock from Jan. 17 to Feb. 28. A reception for the artist will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the Taylor/Mourning Lobby on the first floor of the Windgate Center.

A graduate of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, now serves as the department chair of painting and drawing at the Windgate Art School of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts and is an adjunct instructor of figure drawing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

鈥淩obert is an adjunct drawing instructor who took on the problems posed by Covid for studio art instruction as a personal and professional challenge,鈥 said Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭his exhibition presents drawings created pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic that look at how the pandemic affected his artistic practice as a working artist and as a college studio art instructor.鈥

The new exhibition represents how Bean adapted as an artist and a drawing instructor during the pandemic.

鈥淚鈥檝e spent several decades now working in places as far apart on the spectrum of quality studios as university classrooms to the ramshackle walls of a former warehouse that an artist friend stubbornly called his studio,鈥 Bean said. 鈥淚鈥檝e drawn from the life model again and again in so many different types of places that I鈥檝e lost count. And until 2020 and the tragedy of the pandemic struck, these sessions had always been in person, face to face, with the model and among my fellow artists. But when you cannot be around others because of the risk of infection, how do you continue this practice? You adapt.鈥

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact 501-916-5104 or email Larson at nglarson@ualr.edu.
