Two University of Arkansas at Little Rock faculty members have been inducted into the Arkansas Research Alliance (ARA) Academy, a distinction recognizing leading researchers whose work is driving innovation and economic growth across the state.

Dr. Anindya Ghosh, professor of chemistry and associate dean of the Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and Dr. Philip Huff, associate professor of computer science and director of the Cyberspace Operations Research and Education Center (CORE), were among six researchers selected.

The ARA Academy represents leading researchers from universities across the state and has contributed more than $1 billion to Arkansas鈥檚 economy. Members are advancing industry-focused research in key areas such as advanced manufacturing, energy, cybersecurity, and sustainable design.

Ghosh, one of the nation鈥檚 leading researchers in green chemistry, said the recognition reflects the university鈥檚 strong and growing research environment.

鈥淚鈥檓 honored to be inducted into the Arkansas Research Alliance Academy,鈥 Ghosh said. 鈥淎RA does an outstanding job of supporting research through funding and by connecting researchers with the right resources and partnerships to move ideas forward. This recognition motivates me to push that work forward in ways that benefit Arkansas while preparing students for meaningful careers.鈥

His work in green chemistry, catalysis, and materials science focuses on practical, sustainable solutions that reduce pollution, support clean energy, and create more environmentally responsible materials.

Huff said he is excited to be part of a community working to expand research opportunities across Arkansas.

Huff leads the CORE Center and focuses on advancing cybersecurity for critical infrastructure while building partnerships between academia and industry. He is also the chief scientist and co-founder of Bastazo, an Arkansas-based cybersecurity startup that uses artificial intelligence to strengthen cybersecurity defenses and help organizations prioritize and address vulnerabilities.

Dr. Noureen Siraj, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been awarded a $34,250 Impact Grant from the (ARA) to support cutting-edge research in energy storage technology. Her project aims to develop a high-capacity, cost-effective lithium-ion battery using advanced nano composite materials.

The grant will fund Dr. Siraj鈥檚 research project titled, Nano V鈧侽鈧-PNDC Composite Cathode for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries. The work focuses on improving the performance, safety, and durability of lithium-ion batteries through the development of a new composite cathode that combines vanadium pentoxide (V鈧侽鈧) with phosphorus and nitrogen-doped carbon (PNDC).

鈥淚 am very excited to receive this grant,鈥 Siraj said. 鈥淭his funding will help us advance our battery research and bring new energy technology to Arkansas industries. I鈥檓 also thrilled to involve an undergraduate and graduate student in this project. They鈥檒l gain valuable skills in nanomaterial synthesis, battery fabrication, and performance testing.鈥

Siraj has partnered with , an Arkansas-based supplier of vanadium oxides, to support the research. The partnership will allow for real-world application and testing of the composite materials and may lead to broader collaborations with industry partners across the state.聽

The project addresses a growing global need for sustainable, high-performance energy storage as demand increases in electronics, transportation, and renewable energy. By enhancing the structural integrity and conductivity of V鈧侽鈧-based cathodes, Siraj hopes to overcome common issues like poor cycling performance, vanadium dissolution, and structural degradation.

鈥淭his new battery design could offer much higher energy density and better long-term performance,鈥 Siraj said. 鈥淚t also has the potential to be adapted to other battery systems like zinc-ion and calcium-ion batteries.鈥

This research aligns closely with Arkansas鈥檚 strategic innovation goals outlined in the state鈥檚 2024 Science & Technology Plan, which identifies 鈥渁dvanced energy鈥 and 鈥渓ithium鈥 technologies as key areas for economic growth.

Siraj鈥檚 project is one of four new ARA Impact Grant recipients selected from research institutions across the state. The grants fund 12-month scientific and engineering projects that partner Arkansas universities with industry collaborators. Other awardees include researchers at the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

Dr. Siraj, who joined 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2016, is known for her work in nanomaterials and renewable energy applications. Her team will conduct the research at the university鈥檚 newly developed battery laboratory, where students will gain experience in material synthesis, battery design, and electrochemical analysis.

Three University of Arkansas at Little Rock researchers have been awarded (ARA) Impact Grants to advance groundbreaking projects in nanotechnology, food safety, and artificial bone repair. The grants, part of a $1.86 million initiative, support research that drives innovation and economic growth in Arkansas.

Dr. Alex Biris, chief scientist at the Center for Integrative Nanotechnology Sciences, Dr. Mariya Khodakovskaya, professor of plant biology, and Dr. Tansel Karabacak, director of the School of Physical Sciences, were among 25 researchers across the state to receive funding through the competitive ARA Impact Grant Program. Each grant provides up to $75,000 for projects that align with one of seven targeted growth areas, including precision agriculture, materials engineering applications, and population health innovations.

鈥淓ach of these grants helps push forward practical research that intersects with growth opportunities aligned with Arkansas鈥 economic growth,鈥 said Douglas Hutchings, ARA Academy director. 鈥淲e look forward to seeing the results of the research.鈥

ARA Impact Grants were awarded for the first time to researchers outside the ARA Academy of Scholars & Fellows, emphasizing a statewide push for university-industry collaboration. 

鈥淎mong ARA mandates is to bring deeper collaboration between the state鈥檚 research community and industry,鈥 said Bryan J. Barnhouse, ARA president and CEO. 鈥淭he demand for the Impact Grant program is proof of concept that when applied research is paired with the vested interest of industry across targeted sectors, it fuels innovation that leads to the development of new technologies and economic advancement of our state.鈥 

Research at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock plays a vital role in advancing innovation and economic development across Arkansas. Their work not only contributes to scientific progress but also fosters industry partnerships, creates job opportunities, and strengthens Arkansas鈥檚 position as a hub for research-driven growth.

“These ARA grants provide much-needed resources to researchers as they tackle critical challenges and develop innovative solutions that benefit society,” said Dr. Brian Berry, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost of research. “By supporting cutting-edge research, these grants help drive economic growth in Arkansas and strengthen the state鈥檚 position in an increasingly competitive global market.”

Advancing Bone Regeneration Technology

Biris is leading research on NuCress鈩 Bone Void Filler, an Arkansas-developed technology designed to improve healing for patients with serious bone injuries, such as ACL tears. The project will evaluate its safety and potential benefits, with implications for athletes, military personnel, and the medical industry. The commercialization of this technology could also drive economic growth within the state.

“I am extremely grateful to the ARA for their support and funding of our project,鈥 Biris said. 鈥淭his grant focuses on the further development of our bone regeneration project that has shown impressive results and has attracted significant interest and funding from federal sources, including the Department of Defense. The ARA Impact Grant will allow us to take this research to the next level and to prove that our technology works in an orthopedic model that is well established and which could result in immense positive medical and human impact. Innovations in Urban Farming with Nanotechnology

Khodakovskaya鈥檚 project integrates sustainable nanotechnology into urban agriculture, helping farmers grow healthier, more nutritious food in limited spaces. Her research aims to enhance plant productivity while reducing dependence on conventional fertilizers, ultimately increasing food security and supporting local communities.

鈥淲e are honored to receive this grant, which will allow us to advance innovative solutions for urban agriculture in Arkansas,鈥 Khodakovskaya said. 鈥淭his project bridges the gap between successful laboratory experiments and real-world applications in urban farming. By leveraging cutting-edge nanotechnologies, we aim to enhance plant productivity and nutritional value while reducing reliance on conventional agrochemicals.鈥

Developing Antibacterial Stainless-Steel Surfaces

Karabacak is tackling bacterial contamination in food processing and healthcare industries by developing a cost-effective method to create antibacterial stainless-steel surfaces. The process eliminates the need for chemical coatings, providing a safer, more sustainable solution to food safety concerns.

“On behalf of our team, I would like to express our gratitude to ARA for this prestigious grant, which will enable us to explore our hypothesis on developing antibacterial stainless-steel surfaces through a simple, low-cost, and scalable approach,鈥 Karabacak said. 鈥淭his grant will facilitate collaboration with our industry partner, Safe Foods, ensuring our research addresses real-world problems. We also plan to prepare larger grant proposals for federal programs and submit patent applications for the new technology developed in this project. It also offers us the opportunity to work alongside our national laboratory collaborators at NCTR.”

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the Arkansas Research Alliance (ARA) are proud to announce that Dr. Nitin Agarwal, the Maulden-Entergy Chair and Donaghey Distinguished Professor of Information Science at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and an ARA Fellow, has been named to a pivotal working group launched by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders tasked with exploring the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) within Arkansas state government.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a privilege to contribute to such a pivotal initiative,鈥 Agarwal remarked. 鈥淎rtificial intelligence holds immense potential to drive innovation and economic growth, but it also presents complex challenges. By working together, we can establish Arkansas as a leader in the responsible and forward-thinking adoption of AI technologies, setting a benchmark for the nation and the world.鈥

Agarwal is a member of the AI & Analytics Center of Excellence (AI CoE), chaired by Arkansas Chief Data Officer Robert McGough, which was established as a subcommittee of the Data and Transparency Panel in June. The group will meet for one year to develop policies, guidelines, and best practices for the ethical and effective use of AI within state government.

鈥淣itin works in a global theater of operations through agencies like the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and NATO,鈥 said Bryan J. Barnhouse, president and CEO of Arkansas Research Alliance, 鈥淗is contributions to protecting our nation鈥檚 鈥榙igital space鈥 makes him a perfect fit for the Governor’s AI Task Force and applying his expertise at home in Arkansas.鈥

Additionally, the working group will evaluate pilot projects, such as unemployment insurance fraud detection and recidivism reduction, to craft safe implementation practices. The AI CoE will make their first report to Gov. Sanders in December on the projects鈥 impact on efficiency, cost savings, and economic development.

鈥淎I is already transforming the face of business in America, and Arkansas鈥 state government can鈥檛 get caught flat-footed,鈥 . 鈥淎s we work to find efficiencies within state government, AI can play a role, with appropriate guardrails, in improving our level of service to Arkansans while keeping costs low. At the same time, we must prevent the misuse of AI to protect Arkansans. This working group will build the knowledge base we need to achieve those goals safely.鈥

Agarwal will collaborate with experts from various sectors to develop recommendations for the ethical and secure deployment of AI technologies in state operations. This initiative, part of a statewide effort to harness the potential of AI while addressing its risks, aims to guide policymakers on integrating AI in ways that enhance efficiency and innovation without compromising safety or privacy.

鈥淎s AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, the need for robust privacy protections and ethical considerations in AI policy development is more critical than ever,鈥 Agarwal said. 鈥淎I systems often rely on vast amounts of personal data, raising significant concerns about data security, consent, and misuse. Without clear ethical guidelines, these technologies risk perpetuating biases, violating individual rights, and eroding public trust.鈥

Agarwal emphasized that integrating privacy and ethics into AI policy is essential to ensuring that technological innovation aligns with core values like fairness, accountability, and transparency. This perspective underscores the importance of balancing progress in AI with the responsibility to safeguard societal trust and equity.

鈥淪uch policies must address issues like data ownership, algorithmic accountability, and the equitable distribution of AI benefits,鈥 Agarwal said. 鈥淏y embedding these principles into the foundation of AI governance, we can create systems that serve society responsibly, respect individual rights, and build public confidence in this transformative technology.鈥

Agarwal brings a wealth of expertise to the table. He is an internationally renowned researcher whose pioneering work in the social computing discipline has significantly advanced this fledgling area and helped open many doors for innovation for the scientific community. He studies (deviant) behaviors, (mis/dis)information and influence campaigns, group dynamics, influence, trust, collective action, social-cyber forensics, health informatics, data mining, machine learning, AI, and privacy.

Since joining 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2009, Agarwal has brought in more than $20 million in funding for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock from sponsors like the U.S. Army Research Office, U.S. Office of Naval Research, U.S. Air Force Research Lab, U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, U.S. National Science Foundation, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

At 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Agarwal created the , which was designated as a research center by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education in 2020. Dr. Mary Yang, professor of information science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been named a fellow of the .

ARA fellowships recognize scientists and engineers who reside at a university or institution in Arkansas for their ongoing, exemplary contributions to the state鈥檚 core research focus areas. Each fellow receives a $75,000 grant to advance their research vision.

鈥淚 am very excited to join the ARA Academy and deeply grateful for this opportunity,鈥 Yang said. 鈥淚 look forward to collaborating with ARA on research initiatives that benefit Arkansas and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.鈥

The ARA Academy was founded in 2016 to facilitate meaningful collaboration among some of the most prolific research leaders in Arkansas. The ARA Academy meets each year for face-to- face interaction, often leading to partnerships beneficial to the fields of science critical to the advancement.

鈥淓ach ARA Scholar and Fellow is a research powerhouse in their own right,鈥 said Bryan Barnhouse, president and CEO of ARA. 鈥淐ombined in partnership with the state and the researchers鈥 host institutions, the ARA Academy represents a collaborative juggernaut of research talent pursuing bold, interdisciplinary ideas to support statewide economic development.鈥

Also serving as director of MidSouth Bioinformatics Center at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Yang received her bachelor’s degree in engineering and physics from Hunan University, followed by a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Master of Science in Experimental Solid State Physics, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Physics from Purdue University. She completed her postdoctoral training in human genomics and bioinformatics at the National Human Genome Research Institute and conducted research as a Research Fellow at the same institution from 2008 to 2012.

Yang has also worked as a professional engineer in software engineering at Shenzhen Electronic Industry and Trade Co. from 1992 to 1995. She has certifications in NIH Post Doctor Completion, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Graduate Studies and Research from John Hopkins University. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Association for Computing Machinery, Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society, and MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society.

She has received numerous awards for her academic and research achievements, including NIH Academic Research Enhancement Awards, the Engineering and Information Technology Faculty Excellence Award in Research, Innovative Research-Education Integration Award from the American Council on Science and Education, Best Research Paper Awards, and Outstanding Tutorial Education Awards from various conferences and societies.

Yang was among a cohort of seven new academics to join the ARA Academy, including John Imig of 糖心Vlog传媒MS, Antino Allen of 糖心Vlog传媒MS, Heather Nachtmann of the University of Arkansas, Igor Pogribny of U.S. FDA National Center for Toxicological Research, Grace Ramena of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Jianfeng Xu of Arkansas State University.
