The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will be celebrating Black History Month throughout the entire month of February.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 Black History Month celebration highlights the contributions Black Americans made to the arts,鈥 said Eureka Ice, associate director of the Multicultural Center. 鈥淓vents will focus on visual, vocal, literary, and theatre arts while illuminating some of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Black history and culture.鈥

The Multicultural Center kicks off Black History Month 2025 on Feb. 3 in the DSC Ledbetter A from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students can enjoy drinks, desserts, a 360 photo booth, and more!

The list of events for the month is as follows:

Week 1:

Feb. 3: Black History Month 2025 Kick-off: DSC Ledbetter A, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Feb. 7: Soul Food Friday, DSC Ledbetters, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. 鈥 Students eat free while supplies last.

Week 2:

Feb. 10: Black Cinema Night 鈥 Shirley, Multicultural Center, 5-7 p.m.

Feb. 10 – 25: Black History Month Scavenger Hunt, Campus-wide

Feb. 12: Skate Night, DSC Fitness Center, 6-8 p.m.

Feb. 13: National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Greek Night at the Jack

Week 3:

Feb. 20: Black Authors Showcase, DSC Ledbetters, 3-5 p.m.

Feb. 21: UMOJA Greek Show, DSC Fitness Center, 7-9 p.m.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock鈥檚 English Department will be hosting an African American Read-In event from 3-4 p.m on Feb. 21. The Cooper Honors Program in the English program is sponsoring the read-in as part of the university’s Black History Month activities.

The event is open to the entire campus community and will take place in room 535 of Ottenheimer Library. People are encouraged to bring and read from their favorite book by an African American author, although text samples will be available.

Participants may also choose to listen as others read. The event aims to explore and appreciate Black experiences in literature. Food will be available, as well as the opportunity to win prizes!

鈥淭he event follows the tradition of the National African American Read-Ins established by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in 1990 to encourage people to read together and celebrate African American authors,鈥 said Dr. Laura Barrio Vilar, associate professor of English at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will be hosting events all throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. The focus of these events will be reflection on the past to help us build a better future. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will celebrate Black Americans鈥 contributions to the world while also shedding light on some of the cultural enrichment here at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

The Multicultural Center will kick off Black History Month Feb. 1 from 3-4 p.m., celebrating Black excellence on campus. At 6 p.m., the Office of the Chancellor and the Diversity Council will host Arkansas Sen. Linda Chesterfield at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Black History Month celebration will consist of events such as Black History Trivia, Movie Night, and a campus-wide scavenger hunt. The Multicultural Center will wrap up the month with a visual display of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Black History and an announcement of the scavenger hunt winners.

In celebration of the start of Black History Month, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will host a visit with Arkansas Sen. Linda Chesterfield on Feb. 1, followed by Soul-Food Friday on Feb. 2.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The public is invited to celebrate Black History Month through this special evening of education and reflection. Those who would like to attend Sen. Chesterfield鈥檚 lecture .

During her keynote lecture, 鈥淭he Importance of Black History,鈥 Sen. Chesterfield will share her insights on the importance of acknowledging, understanding, and teaching Black history to build a more inclusive and informed society. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about Sen. Chesterfield鈥檚 experiences as an educator and gain valuable perspectives on the role of Black history in shaping our present and future.

Sen. Chesterfield is a retired teacher with more than 30 years of classroom experience teaching. She is a past president of the Little Rock School Board and the Pulaski County Association of Classroom Teachers. She also served two terms as president of the Arkansas Education Association. She also served on the board of the National Education Association and is the only Arkansan to have been elected to the NEA鈥檚 nine-member Executive Committee.

In 2003, Sen. Chesterfield was elected to the House of Representatives, where she served through 2008. She was elected to the Senate in 2010, where she represents District 12 and serves as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee.

On Friday, Feb. 2, the university community will get the chance to experience the culinary delights of Soul Food Friday. Two Black-owned food trucks will serve lunch for students from 11 a.m. 鈥 1 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Hall.

Faculty and staff are invited to join the feast from 1-2 p.m. While students will receive a complimentary lunch, faculty and staff will need to purchase their meals. Students can register for the event on the Trojan Engage App.

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock community is invited to celebrate Black History Month with these great events hosted by the Multicultural Center.

鈥淥ur theme for this year’s Black History Month celebration is 鈥楿buntu,鈥 or 鈥業 am because we are,鈥欌 said Lauren Wilson, associate director of the Multicultural Center. 鈥淲ith this theme, we wanted to focus on community, especially what we have built within the Multicultural Center and Student Affairs Diversity Initiatives program. It is more important than ever to acknowledge the past, celebrate the present, and envision a brighter future.鈥

Black History Month will begin with a kick-off event highlighting Black excellence on campus from 4-6 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Multicultural Center in Ottenheimer Library.

Throughout February, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will host exciting events like Paint-N-Sip, Poetry Out Loud, Karaoke, and Silent Disco.

The Multicultural Center will host its first Pinnacle Awards Gala at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Bailey Alumni Center. The Pinnacle Awards will celebrate our current students who are involved in the Multicultural Center鈥檚 various programs, including the Student Affairs Diversity Initiatives. We will also highlight the faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who have supported The MC as it has grown over the past four years.

Black History Month will wrap up with a Black Excellence Expo from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Donaghey Student Center Fitness Center. The expo will feature food from Black-owned restaurants, the opportunity to learn about cultural organizations on campus, and door prizes from Black-owned businesses.
