The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law鈥檚 Jessup International Trial Team won the First Place Memorial Award at the Jessup Regionals competition hosted by the University of Denver Sturm College of Law Feb. 25.

The student team includes Caleb Scott, Jennifer Henderson, Hunter Smithburg, and Clay Ellis. Ellis, who has been on the team since 2021, also won the 7th Best Oralist Award.

鈥淚 was humbled to be recognized, and I could not have done it without the help of my teammates,鈥 Ellis said.

Moot court gives law students the opportunity to research and litigate hypothetical problems, compete against other law students, and receive feedback from peers and faculty.

The Bowen School of Law鈥檚 international trial team is coached by Rebecca Feldmann, assistant professor of clinical education. The final argument, which the team submitted to Jessup on Jan. 17, was nearly 90 pages long and took four months to complete.

鈥淭here was a lot of reading, revising, and rereading involved for the final product,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淧rofessor Feldmann gave us really good feedback the whole time. Thankfully, we were taught heavy revision in the class, so that鈥檚 just what we know.鈥

The Jessup competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between three countries before the International Court of Justice. Teams prepare oral and written arguments for both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.Feldmann started the Jessup team during the 2021-2022 academic year. It is Ellis and Smithburg鈥檚 second year on the team, and Scott and Henderson鈥檚 first.

鈥淭heir dedication, collaboration, and willingness to learn a challenging area of law and put the work in to create such a solid product was great to see,鈥 Feldmann said. 鈥淚t was a real thrill to be able to coach this team.鈥

Jessup International Moot Court is organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), a non-profit association that provides students with various opportunities to study, research, and network in the international legal arena.

Jessup is the largest moot court competition in the world, with participants from over 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions competing in the regional rounds.

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law has received a $15,000 grant from the Arkansas Community Foundation to provide continuing legal education opportunities for topics relevant to the Arkansas LGBTQ community.

Bowen鈥檚 OutLaw Legal Society, a student organization with about 50 members, received the grant. The group鈥檚 mission includes promoting diversity, raising awareness of legal issues affecting LGBT people, and maintaining an open atmosphere of respect, equality, and justice for all.

Projects for the two-year grant include working with community partners to hold rainbow clinics that provide legal assistance for LGBTQ Arkansans. They also plan to create a toolkit for lawyers that provides resources for the name and gender change legal processes.

鈥淭he third project is to offer continuing legal education (CLEs) events focused on timely Arkansas LGBTQ+ legal issues,鈥 said Melody Weigel, advisor to OutLaw Legal Society. 鈥淲e will host professional development events on relevant topics to the LGBTQ community for attorneys and law school students.鈥

The OutLaw Legal Society has twice been named Bowen鈥檚 Student Organization of the Year for their community involvement, on-campus engagement, and volunteerism. Some of their activities include volunteering at legal clinics to provide pro bono services to low-income individuals who needed assistance with name and gender changes, leading education events regarding health care issues affecting the LGBTQ community, creating a student scholarship fund, and conducting a holiday supply drive for Lucie鈥檚 Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to rehousing queer youth who may be unsheltered.

Caleb Scott, a second-year Bowen law student who serves as president of OutLaw Legal Society, said the grant allows the very active student organization to expand its services.

鈥淥utLaw鈥檚 scope has reached its max threshold of what students can do without extra funding,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淲ith this grant, we are able to go out and do more and help more people. We are so thankful to the Arkansas Community Foundation for their support.鈥
