Clark Valentine, assistant professor of drawing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, spent part of his summer immersed in the vibrant culture and artistic traditions of Nepal during a unique international artist residency in Kathmandu.

From June 1 to July 1, Valentine participated in the , a juried program that brings in artists from around the world for a month of creative exchange. While there, Valentine collaborated with Bangladeshi artist Liton Chandra Sarker and presented his work in a final exhibition at the historic Patan Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former 17th-century royal palace.

鈥淭his residency gave me the chance to live and work as an artist in Kathmandu, not just as a visitor,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淚 felt connected with people, learned to cook local food, and experienced what life is like as an artist living in the city.鈥

During the residency, Valentine created eight new drawings inspired by Nepali artistic traditions, including Thangka paintings, mandalas, and temple wood carvings. His work responded to both the religious and cosmological symbolism in Hindu and Buddhist art as well as his personal experiences in Nepal. He also developed video pieces influenced by a 10-day silent meditation retreat at the Kopan Monastery, where he participated in Buddhist teachings during the Saga Dawa Festival, one of the most significant celebrations in the Buddhist calendar.

Valentine also connected with students and faculty at the Kathmandu University School of Arts, where he gave lectures, visited with students and faculty, and learned about their unique blend of traditional and contemporary art practices.

鈥淭heir students are studying many of the same contemporary texts as ours, but they also engage deeply with Nepali traditions,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淚t was fascinating to see the similarities and differences between our programs.鈥

Valentine鈥檚 experience in Kathmandu was supported by a College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education (CHASSE) Summer Research and Creative Activities Fellowship. His new drawings will be featured in an upcoming solo exhibition, 鈥淒rawing Time,鈥 opening Oct. 1 at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. The exhibition will also feature some of his previous and newer works of art.

鈥淭his residency was such a rich cultural immersion,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淚t will continue to shape my art and teaching moving forward.鈥

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a faculty exhibition featuring the work of Clark Valentine, assistant professor of drawing in the School of Art and Design, beginning Aug. 19.

The exhibition, 鈥渄raw (verb): new work by Clark Valentine,鈥 will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design, from Aug. 19 to Sept. 15. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in the WIndgate Center. The exhibition and the reception are both free and open to the public.

鈥淭he exhibition will feature about a dozen drawings, white ink on black paper, that I鈥檝e created since I started working at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock last year,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淢y mission is to cultivate a space for the viewer to feel the intimacy of the drawings. My work explores the phenomenological experience of mark making. In my drawings, each mark becomes a unique repetition of the mark before it. Over time, the disruptions of the hand change the marks, and the drawing takes itself in new directions. These variations of the marks become key compositional features. The process of drawing then becomes a balance between an active meditation of the mind and a passive response of the hand.鈥

The Marianne Oberg Foundation for Spiritual Art has also recognized Valentine for the work being displayed in the exhibition with a . He will be continuing this series throughout the year, and his work will be displayed during a virtual exhibit on ArtPlacer in December along with fellow Spiritual Art Grant recipients.

Clark Valentine's drawing, "Triangle Pattern 10," will be on display in his upcoming exhibition.

鈥淐lark Valentine draws as a spiritual practice, engaging with the gesture of mark-making as a means of cultivating presence, contemplative awareness, and embodied consciousness,鈥 the Marianne Oberg Foundation wrote of Valentine. 鈥淎s a professor, Clark seeks to equip his students with tools for mindfulness, and to provide classes that can offer students the opportunity to grow in areas of sensitivity to the sacred, passion for community, and compassion for the self. MOFSA is excited to support this young artist, educator, and contemplative, and to follow the future evolution of his career.鈥

Valentine received his MFA from Colorado State University with a concentration in drawing. His work has been exhibited in museums, universities, and galleries on five continents, and widely throughout the United States.

All 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. 鈥 2 p.m. on weekends. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. The galleries are closed on university holidays.

Clark Valentine, assistant professor of drawing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, has earned a coveted spot in the highly competitive .

Valentine was one of only 38 artists from more than 1,200 submissions selected for the exhibition. His work, 鈥淯ntitled (Weaving 7),鈥 is 50 inches by 60 inches and was completed in 2023.

鈥淚 am very excited about this piece getting into the Delta Triennial,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淭his was the first piece that I finished when I moved to Arkansas and started at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. It moved with me through two cities, three states, two jobs, and four art studios.鈥

Normally, a piece like this would take Valentine three to four months to complete, but it took him years because of all of the changes in his life.

鈥淭his was one of those pieces that I kept chugging away on for years,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淓very time I got in a flow, life would interrupt. When I look at it, I see all of these pivotal changes that have happened over my life in the past two years in this time of change and inconsistency. I see a really important moment in my practice that shows the interconnectedness of the lived experience and studio art.鈥

For more than 60 years, the Delta exhibition has elevated and promoted awareness of artists born in or working in Arkansas and its surrounding states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Founded by AMFA in 1958 as a juried exhibition, the Delta is named after the fertile floodplains surrounding the Mississippi River and seeks to amplify artistic voices in the Mid-South as they reflect complex histories and shifts in the cultural landscape.

Over time, the Delta exhibition has transformed into a collaborative series, 鈥淒elta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South,鈥 developed in partnership with museums across the region, and has now evolved into its current form as a triennial juried exhibition.

鈥淭his year, AMFA received over 1,200 applications 鈥 a record-breaking number for AMFA鈥檚 Delta exhibition,鈥 said Brian Lang, chief curator and Windgate Foundation curator of contemporary craft. 鈥淭he sheer volume of applicants allowed jurors to select a truly exceptional showcase of art from the Mid-South. The 2024 Delta Triennial will be a display of unparalleled creativity and talent, making it a must-see exhibition for art enthusiasts and museumgoers alike.鈥

The Delta Triennial Exhibition will be on display at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts until Aug. 25. You will also have the opportunity to view a solo exhibition by Valentine opening Aug. 19 at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

鈥淚 am very grateful for the faculty鈥檚 support at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 Valentine said. 鈥淭his has been an exceptional journey to accomplish in my first year here. They have made me feel connected and a part of a community.鈥

Valentine has a busy year ahead of him. These exhibitions will be followed by a solo exhibition in Colorado this fall, a solo exhibition in Peoria, Illinois, in spring 2025, and an artist residency and exhibition in Kathmandu, Nepal, during summer 2025.
