The University of Arkansas at Little Rock welcomed 40 new members into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi on April 11, 2026, marking the first on-campus induction ceremony held in more than two years. University Chancellor Christina Drale attended, along with administrative representatives and deans from colleges across campus.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation鈥檚 oldest and most selective multidisciplinary collegiate honor society. Membership is by invitation only and reserved for those who have demonstrated the highest levels of academic achievement. Only the top 7.5% of juniors and seniors and the top 10% of graduate students are eligible. Each year, approximately 20,000 members are initiated across more than 300 campuses in the United States and its territories. Since its founding, more than 1.75 million scholars and professionals have joined its ranks.

鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock has a fantastic student body, and Phi Kappa Phi represents the cream of the crop,鈥 said Dr. Rex Richard Wilkins, assistant professor of Spanish and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Phi Kappa Phi chapter president. 鈥淲e are proud of our students鈥 achievements both inside and outside the classroom, and we want our 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Trojans to get the recognition they so fully deserve.鈥

Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, fondly recalls his childhood hobby of coin collecting, inspired by his late mother, Dr. Raye Montague.

鈥淢y mom got me into coin collecting as a child, so I find it fascinating that I ended up working with the United States Mint on a coin design in her honor,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淪he would have been blown away by this recognition. She never would have imagined something like this happening.鈥

Dr. Raye Montague, an internationally registered professional engineer with the U.S. Navy, made history as the creator of the first computer-generated rough draft of a U.S. naval ship. Known as the Navy鈥檚 real-life 鈥淗idden Figure,鈥 she was celebrated at naval events in Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and her achievements were highlighted during a live episode of 鈥淕ood Morning America鈥 on Feb. 20, 2017.

Raye Montague was honored with a United States dollar coin that was released by the U.S. Mint in January 2025 as part of a set honoring innovators and innovations from Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, and Texas.

A Coin to Honor Innovation

The journey to commemorate Raye Montague on the $1 coin began in 2023 when Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders nominated her for consideration in the U.S. Mint鈥檚 American Innovation $1 Coin Program.

This multi-year series, launched in 2018, celebrates innovation and innovators across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Each coin鈥檚 design reflects significant contributions to innovation within a jurisdiction. The Mint collaborates with state governors or chief executives, along with subject matter experts, to determine design concepts. Final designs are selected by the Secretary of the Treasury.

鈥淲hen the U.S. Mint contacted me, they told me there was already strong interest in moving forward,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚 was authorized to speak as her family member and share her story.鈥

Designing the Coin

Montague worked closely with U.S. Mint officials, providing photographs, interviews, and detailed information about his mother鈥檚 life, work habits, and accomplishments. Artists used this material to create renderings of the coin, which Montague reviewed throughout the process.

The final design, created by Artistic Infusion Program Designer Elana Hagler and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Eric David Custer, features a close-up of Raye Montague鈥檚 face alongside a visualization of a U.S. Navy Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate鈥攁 ship she designed using computer technology. The coin鈥檚 grid-like sea background symbolizes the engineering and drafting techniques she pioneered. Inscriptions include 鈥淯NITED STATES OF AMERICA,鈥 鈥淎RKANSAS,鈥 and 鈥淩AYE MONTAGUE.鈥

鈥淭he chosen design is the one I loved most,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚t captures her face, the ship she designed, and a computer grid over the ocean. My mom was very patriotic, and the design shows her holding her hand over her heart. Its simplicity is beautiful.鈥

Montague learned of the Treasury Department鈥檚 approval of the coin during a ceremony renaming a federal building in his mother鈥檚 honor. Russell Evans, a program specialist with the Mint, attended the dedication of the newly renamed to deliver the news in person.

Montague expressed gratitude for the U.S. Mint鈥檚 professionalism and dedication throughout the process.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 say enough about how impressed I am with the Mint and their staff,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淭hey stayed in touch with my family, sought our input frequently, and made the experience truly special. We even have a standing invitation for a private tour of a Mint facility, and we鈥檙e looking forward to it!鈥

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock hosted more than 4,000 people during a triumphant total solar eclipse event that captivated students, faculty, staff, and community members alike.

鈥淭he celebration we hosted on campus was spectacular and drew visitors locally and from around the country,鈥 Chancellor Christina Drale said. 鈥淭he educational programs and displays showcased the academic talent we have on campus, and all of the volunteers helped make this an all-around fun event for everyone.鈥

More than 200 volunteers helped the event become a huge success! The event was planned for many months by the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Eclipse Committee, comprised of Ann Bain, Carrie Phillips, Gregory Guisbiers, Alicia Dorn, Aaron Birmingham, Angie Faller, Brian Berry, Justin Early, Kara Brown, Katina White, Larry Whitman, Leslie Hutchins, Meaghan Milliorn, Muriel Schrepfer, Ross Bradley, Regina Wade-Carter, Sarah Beth Estes, Sadie Lea, Tom Clifton, Toni Boyer, Tansel Karabacak, and Cody Decker.

The solar eclipse event helped spread word about 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and its experts far and wide. Stories in the media generated 3.5 billion media impressions and 320 media alerts!

“It is my second time watching a total solar eclipse, but the magic still operates like the very first time! It is an incredible feeling of satisfaction to be able to watch this celestial show!鈥 said Dr. Gregory Guisbiers, associate professor of physics at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

Amidst a backdrop of celestial splendor, participants gathered at the Jack Stephens Center to witness this rare astronomical phenomenon, forging unforgettable memories and fostering a sense of unity and awe.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an amazing event,鈥 said Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for student affairs 鈥 student success. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so nice to see people here enjoying this experience and learning so many things. The energy today is very special indeed.鈥

As the sun vanished behind the moon for nearly two-and-a-half minutes, the campus buzzed with excitement and scientific curiosity, marking a momentous occasion that will be cherished for years to come.

鈥淎 lot of people missed seeing a total solar eclipse that took place in the western United States seven years ago, but lots of people had access to this total solar eclipse and didn鈥檛 have to travel as far to see it,鈥 said Dr. Miles Blanton, advanced instructor of physics and astronomy. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a novel event, and it’s so predictable. That鈥檚 what surprises a lot of people. You can predict it down to the minute. It feels like you are in control when we are not in control of so much of the natural world.鈥

As the solar eclipse drew near, the crowd grew silent as the music stopped, the temperature fell, and a breeze could be felt in the air. As total darkness fell at 1:51 p.m., members of the crowd cheered, gasped, and cried as they witnessed the celestial event.

鈥淚t was so awesome to be here in this breathtaking moment,鈥 Kristi Smith, associate vice chancellor of alumni and development, said after watching the eclipse. 鈥淲e had the perfect weather, and all the stars aligned for this amazing event. It is so wonderful that our university brought together so many people to have such a great event for the community.鈥

The community event brought together a wonderful mix of the arts and the sciences. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provided observation sessions with telescopes, an inflatable planetarium, a Foucault鈥檚 pendulum, Cavendish鈥檚 balance, gravity well, and meteorites on display. The Arkansas Space Grant Consortium provided 30,000 pairs of complementary solar eclipse glasses.

鈥淚鈥檓 a kid on the inside, and I came here to experience the solar eclipse,鈥 said Joshua Pack, a junior double majoring in chemistry and biology. 鈥淚 was surprised by the amount of stuff to do at the event. I don鈥檛 travel a lot, so this was a unique opportunity to see the solar eclipse in my hometown.鈥

Employees and students from the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education had more than 30 people volunteer as face painters. Students designed a custom face painting template and solar eclipse sticker.

In one of many scientific demonstrations on display, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Emerging Analytics Center created a special virtual reality experience, Total Solar Eclipse VR 2024. The project was put together by students Carlos Ochoa, Cecily Mobley, Ashlly Lambaren, Colin McNerny, and Eric Helms with guidance from Jason Zak, lead artist, and Wesley Ferguson, research associate.

鈥淭he VR app we made takes you into space, where you can see the perspective of the total solar eclipse from a completely new angle,鈥 said Colin NcNerny, a senior electronic and computer engineering major. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 look directly at the Sun in real life without it hurting your eyes. In virtual space, you can look at the sun in great detail. We also created a Snapchat filter which shows the user wearing solar eclipse glasses, and you can see the eclipse reflected in the lenses.鈥

Visitors traveled from near and far to take part in the day鈥檚 events.

鈥淢y son wants to be an astrophysicist, so Little Rock was a close drive to spark the imagination of our future generation,鈥 said Danielle Hart, who drove from Huntsville, Alabama, to watch the eclipse with her family at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淚t was so absolutely incredible. That moment when the sky goes dark and the crowd cheers, it鈥檚 a very magical moment.鈥

The solar eclipse celebration was sponsored by the Donaghey Foundation, Arkansas Space Grant Consortium, and the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

A university professor had a once-in-a-lifetime experience of serving as one of the guest speakers celebrating the dedication of a federal building named in his mother鈥檚 honor.

Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, student success at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, celebrated the dedication of a building at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in Bethesda, Maryland.

Montague鈥檚 mother, the late Dr. Montague, an internationally registered professional engineer with the U.S. Navy, is credited with creating the first computer-generated rough draft of a U.S. naval ship. Montague was recognized as the U.S. Navy鈥檚 real-life 鈥淗idden Figure鈥 during naval events in Washington, D.C. and Virginia and on the Feb. 20, 2017, live episode of 鈥淕ood Morning America.鈥

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti signed a letter in August 2023 approving the renaming of Carderock鈥檚 Maritime Technology Information Center, located in Building 40, after the naval icon. Carderock marked this historic event by hosting a ceremony on Feb. 15, unveiling the new name of Building 40 to the Raye Montague Center for Maritime Technology.

Raye Montague posthumously received this dedication for her contributions to the U.S. Navy. David Montague attended the event with his wife Whitney, an engineer, and child Mace, a sociology major at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

Montague and his family were touched by the many historic displays, research, and hard work that has gone into the building to honor Raye Montague鈥檚 lifetime of accomplishments.

鈥淚t was fantastic to be there in person to see the building and all the work they put into it,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淭hey put a huge effort to turn this building into something people can enjoy and learn from. They even found a model of her first ship designed by a computer. A process that revolutionized the Naval fleet鈥檚 ship design time from two years by hand, to a little over 18 hours by computer. I was overwhelmed to see her honored this way. There鈥檚 even a picture of me as a baby in one of the timelines.鈥

Montague has many fond childhood memories of Carderock. As a single mother at the time, Raye Montague would often bring her young son to work with her.

鈥淚 learned how to program a computer at Carderock,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚 was around 4 years old, and that is what my mom gave me to keep me busy. I remember just running around and exploring a lot as a kid.鈥

Montague, along with author Paige Bowers, co-wrote a book in 2021 about Raye Montague鈥檚 life, titled 鈥.鈥 As part of the building dedication celebrations, he held a book discussion about his mother鈥檚 life.

This picture of the late Dr. Raye Montague stands in the newly renamed Raye Montague Center for Maritime Technology.
This picture of the late Dr. Raye Montague stands in the newly renamed Raye Montague Center for Maritime Technology.

鈥淚 think my mom would be blown away by this, just happy to be recognized by the people who were part of the formative and early years of her career,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚n our book, we mention this facility in two chapters. My mother started in the Applied Mathematics Lab at Carderock, and she did a lot of her formative, early career opportunities when she moved from Arkansas 鈥 during segregation 鈥 to Maryland, and the Navy gave her that opportunity. She really felt like the Carderock people were her extended family. She really took the work of designing the homes of sailors, marines, and contractors seriously. She wanted to keep them safe.鈥

Raye Montague began her civilian career as a clerk typist at the David Taylor Model Basin, now known as NSWC Carderock Division. She quickly showed her aptitude in science and math, which would eventually lead her to be reassigned to work with the new Universal Automatic Computer I (UNIVAC I) system, the world鈥檚 first commercially available computer. She is credited with designing the first draft of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate in 1971 in less than 19 hours, earning her a Meritorious Civilian Service Award and revolutionizing ship design from that day forward.

鈥淲e owe a lot in the way we design ships to Raye Montague,鈥 Carderock Technical Director Larry Tarasek said. 鈥淎nd we owe a lot in how we recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion to Raye Montague. The least we can do is name a building after her.鈥

The wonderful trip held one last surprise for Montague. He has been working with representatives from the U.S. Mint on a design of a $1 coin in honor of his mother, and a member of the U.S. Mint informed him just before the ceremony that the $1 coin in honor of Raye Montague will be released next year in 2025.

A student success professional at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has been recognized for outstanding dedication in promoting educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dr. Ashia Muhammad, director of the McNair Scholars Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, received the Thomas E. Patterson Education Award during the King Kennedy Awards Ceremony held Feb. 17.

鈥淚 was shocked to receive this award,鈥 Muhammad said. 鈥淚 do the work that I do because I enjoy it, but it feels great to be in a position where you are recognized for your work and recognized with other educators.鈥

The King Kennedy Awards, sponsored by the Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus, were established in 2005 to honor and recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and the state of Arkansas. The Thomas E. Patterson Educational Award is presented to an individual who fights for equality of educational opportunity for students and education employees of color and those who are poor.

“Dr. Muhammad is a needed vanguard of unyielding student advocacy to frame earning a doctorate as an achievable goal,鈥 said Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. 鈥淭his award speaks to that fierce advocacy.”

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has hosted the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement program since 1991. The objective of the program is to provide educational experiences that will prepare first-generation and low-income or historically underrepresented undergraduates for doctoral study.

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock supports 26 McNair Scholars every year. Scholars are assigned a faculty mentor and complete a summer research internship where they complete an original research project. Scholars also participate in workshops and activities that will prepare them for graduating school, including Graduate Record Examination (GRE) preparation, tutoring, academic counseling, graduate school visits, financial aid counseling, assistance with securing financial support for graduate school, and advising on how to apply for and successfully complete graduate school.

Muhammad is celebrating her 10-year anniversary at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She joined the university in 2014 as assistant director of the McNair Scholars Program and has served as director since 2018.

鈥淚 constantly say that I am the students I serve,鈥 Muhammad said. 鈥淚 started my college journey as a first-generation, low-income student, so I understand some of the nuances that go with trying to figure out the journey of higher education from undergrad and then moving forward to advanced degrees. Some of these students might not have seen people like them go on to get graduate degrees. I鈥檝e enjoyed watching them realize that graduate school is accessible, apply to graduate programs, and receive acceptances and funding opportunities. Watching them realize how higher education can transform their lives has been an amazing journey to be a part of.鈥

Mahesh Thombre had long held the goal of acquiring his Master of Business Administration (MBA). This past December, this dream became a reality for Thombre when he graduated from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 MBA program.

Before beginning his MBA, Thombre had a successful career in human resources (HR), which included serving in the Air Force in India in HR, as well as working as a human resources director in the corporate sector. Thombre was drawn to the field of HR by his empathy for others and desire to empower people to do great things.

鈥淚 believe that my internal desire to help people in whatever small way possible is what started me in the field,鈥 said Thombre. 鈥淚 realized that human connection is at the core of everything we do, and that even with limited resources, we can empower others to achieve impossible feats.鈥

Thombre, despite having already earned his master鈥檚 in personnel management, decided that the next step in his journey was to go back to school and earn his MBA with a concentration in HR. The COVID-19 pandemic provided him with the push he needed to pursue this dream, and Thombre realized that if he kept postponing his dream, he may never achieve it.

鈥淚 quit my job to become a full-time student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 said Thombre. 鈥淚t was a difficult choice to make; leaving behind a stable life to become a full-time student was really nerve-wracking. I had moments of self doubt starting this journey. However, with the support and encouragement from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty and staff, I could successfully navigate my academic journey.鈥

Thombre highlighted the instrumental role that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty and staff played in his success. Student Support Services (SSS) and the School of Business were particularly helpful to him as he navigated this new territory.

鈥淚 got the full support from the excellent faculty and staff. I would like to especially thank Dr. Mark Funk, Dr. Robert Mitchell, and all other faculties who were so supportive and encouraging of my decision to pursue the MBA program. I would also like to thank Dr. David Montague, Dr. Desarae Nelson, and Marty Mayfield from SSS who were constant support in my studies and work.鈥

During his time in school, Thombre served as a graduate assistant in SSS at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. Gradually, he came to realize his passion for motivating and encouraging students. Thombre chose to continue his work with SSS and started in his new position of success coordinator in January 2024.

鈥淚n SSS, I get to connect with diverse demographics of students which I really like. The program supports first-generation and economically underprivileged students in realizing their dreams of acquiring a university degree,鈥 Thombre said. 鈥淲hile working as a graduate assistant, I realized that I love to interact and motivate students in pursuit of furthering their education.鈥

Even 60 years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy Jr., one of the most well-known and studied events in American history continues to leave unanswered questions behind and remains a topic of intrigue for people all around the world.

Dr. David Montague, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs 鈥 student success at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, understands the continued fascination.

鈥淭here is no shortage of interest in this topic,鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 interesting when you start thinking of the historical context of people tied to this assassination and that many of them may be gone the next time there is a significant anniversary. The symposium is one of the few times we鈥檝e had a gathering of so many people who have a direct connection to the investigation of the assassination.鈥

Montague was one of many experts selected to speak at a symposium that brought together experts in law, journalism, forensics, medicine, physics, education, and many other topics to review the mystery of JFK鈥檚 assassination on the event鈥檚 60th anniversary. Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, in a presidential motorcade in Dallas.

Many people do not know that this mild-mannered academic has a deep background in federal investigations and national security. He worked as the senior investigator for the U.S. Assassination Records Review Board (ARRB), a federal agency that investigated and collected records related to the JFK assassination, from 1995 to 1997. Montague thinks his team鈥檚 work with the review board was especially successful since people knew the information was being collected for the National Archives and reviewed for release to the public.

The symposium, 鈥淭he JFK Assassination at 60: New Frontiers in Scientific, Medical, Legal, and Historical Research,鈥 was held Nov. 15-17 by the

The three-day, hybrid academic conference examined the forensic and cultural impact of the Kennedy assassination, with topics ranging from criminalistic analysis of events in Dealey Plaza to John Harvey Oswald鈥檚 intelligence connections.

During Montague鈥檚 Nov. 17 talk, 鈥淟essons from the ARRB: The Value of Investigative Research from National Security,鈥 he spoke about the importance of investigative research on the JFK assassination with respect to national security and the relevance of continued pursuit of disclosure of government records.

As head of the investigations division, he was authorized to identify, acquire, and declassify information and records pertaining to the JFK assassination. This work involved national security functions within intelligence and law enforcement, including interviewing hundreds of people connected to the assassination. To this day, many of the records that Montague worked on as part of the ARRB remain classified.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 the rationale for holding on to my call report for tracking down someone who said they saw someone mutilate the president鈥檚 throat?鈥 Montague said. 鈥淚t was just someone鈥檚 statement to me. Why not release my report of my initial conversation with someone who was the spouse of the official White House photographer. For years, I kept saying to myself it鈥檚 because I provided someone鈥檚 personally identifiable information in the reports. Other than redacting that information out, I think the public would want to know the initial reactions of people who would reach out to the board. They want to know the truth. Here it is 2023, and there are still only a few of the things I worked on that have been released publicly.鈥

During the symposium, Montague said he was lucky enough to have a conversation with actor Alec Baldwin, who joined the symposium as a keynote speaker to discuss his experience working on a JFK 50th anniversary show for MSNBC that was never aired. According to Baldwin, the episode went against NBC鈥檚 policy of supporting the conclusions of the Warren Commission, which concluded that Oswald was the sole assassin.

Dr. David Montague (left) meets with Actor Alec Baldwin (right) during a symposium commemorating the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

One of the highlights of the conference for Montague was to hear the story of Paul Landis, a former Secret Service agent who was assigned to First Lady Jackie Kennedy and was in the vehicle behind Kennedy鈥檚 limo at the time of the assassination.

After 60 years of silence, Landis released a book this year detailing his time as a Secret Service agent. This includes an important piece of information that differs from the official version of the day Kennedy was killed.
