A 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock graduate student spent her summer interning with , where her strong work ethic and technical writing skills impressed her team so much that the company has extended her internship beyond the summer.

Michelle Keithley, a native of Springfield, Missouri, earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in professional and technical writing from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in December 2024 and is now pursuing her master鈥檚 degree in professional and technical writing. She expects to graduate in May 2026 and plans to pursue a career as a medical technical writer.

During her internship, Keithley worked remotely with Siemens Healthineers鈥 Molecular Imaging SPECT Customer Service team, which provides support for software application engineers and service technicians who set up and maintain imaging machines.

鈥淚鈥檓 a technical writer intern, and I write documentation for users,鈥 Keithley said. 鈥淚 work closely with the team to develop documentation on workarounds, problems, procedures, and protocols. I鈥檓 not filing papers or making coffee. I am actually using the skills that I went to school for.鈥

Keithley initially joined Siemens Healthineers as part of the company鈥檚 competitive summer internship program, which included more than 150 interns from across the country. She said working alongside peers from top universities like Harvard, Yale, and UCLA was a rewarding challenge.

鈥淚 came across the company during my undergraduate studies while looking for technical writing roles,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I saw they had an internship program, I thought I could do this. Seeing the list of interns from top schools from across the country, it felt like I had arrived.鈥

Over the course of the internship, Keithley gained valuable experience applying her technical writing and editing skills in a global corporate environment. She also learned the importance of collaboration with subject matter experts.

鈥淚 have definitely learned how a global corporation works,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his internship has given me confidence in my skill set and knowledge. Prior to me being on the team, they did not have a technical writer. They had engineers and other team members writing these protocols and procedures. While they are very smart people, writing is not their primary skill set. I think they appreciated my work ethic and skill set and found me to be a valuable part of the team, which is why they extended the internship.鈥

For Keithley, the experience has been both career-affirming and personally meaningful.

鈥淚f you would have asked me when I started school if I鈥檇 be working on a molecular imaging team, I鈥檇 have said you were crazy,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut this has been a great internship. I would recommend this company to anyone. It鈥檚 been an opportunity to use the skills I learned in my undergraduate education in real life, and that鈥檚 been gratifying.鈥

Keithley now continues her Siemens internship part-time while pursuing her graduate studies and working as a graduate assistant with 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Online Writing Lab. She hopes the experience will open doors to a full-time technical writing role after graduation.

鈥淚 feel really blessed to have been given all the opportunities that I鈥檝e been given,鈥 she said.

The Little Rock native, who plans to graduate in May 2026, completed a competitive internship with , where she worked as an administrative cost and budget intern.

Dorsey鈥檚 role included creating rules and hierarchies within Oracle Enterprise Profitability and Cost Management software to automate key financial reports, including statutory financial reports, Sherlock reports, and customized executive reports. She also analyzed accounts and gained insight into how the company allocates costs.

鈥淭his internship has taught me how to work with a team and communicate with leaders in other departments,鈥 Dorsey said. 鈥淚t also gave me a real-world understanding of the insurance industry and how to succeed in a corporate environment, things you just can鈥檛 fully learn in a classroom.鈥

In addition to technical skills, the internship gave Dorsey the chance to strengthen her professional communication abilities. She was required to present her internship project to company leaders. This experience built up her confidence in public speaking.

鈥淢y favorite part of the internship was participating in luncheons with top executives, team-building exercises with other interns, and collaborating with my team,鈥 she said. 鈥淏eing able to present to leaders at Blue Cross pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow.鈥

After graduation, Dorsey plans to sit for the CPA exam and pursue a career as a staff accountant in public, corporate, or governmental accounting. She credits both her coursework and her internship experiences for preparing her for the next step in her future career.

鈥淭he excellent education I have received from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock accounting program and School of Business was great preparation for my internship,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 would recommend the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock accounting program to any students considering an accounting career.鈥

Dorsey has also taken advantage of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 location in the political and business center of Arkansas, completing several internships during her time as a student.

Outside the classroom, Dorsey is active in Beta Alpha Psi, the national honor society for accounting students. As an officer, she has attended national and regional meetings, where she connected with accounting professionals, faculty, and students from across the country.

鈥淢y involvement in Beta Alpha Psi has given me leadership opportunities and expanded my professional network,鈥 she said.

For Dorsey, the internship at Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield was more than just a summer job. It was a chance to put her classroom knowledge into practice, develop professional skills, and prepare for life after graduation.

鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock has given me the chance to apply what I鈥檝e learned in real-world situations,鈥 Dorsey said. 鈥淭his internship not only prepared me for my future career but also gave me the confidence to step into the accounting field ready to contribute.鈥

Angela Hernandez, a senior finance major from Little Rock, is building a strong foundation for her future career in finance through an internship at , a Community Development Financial Institution that supports Arkansas business owners by providing access to capital and technical assistance.

Hernandez began her internship in July and will continue through December. She said the experience has given her valuable exposure to the lending industry and deepened her understanding of entrepreneurship and community development.

鈥淭hrough this internship, I鈥檝e had the opportunity to work closely with several departments, including community development, lending, and marketing,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e participated in a variety of projects that have given me insight into the full process of loan application and approval. It鈥檚 allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting and see how financial institutions serve underserved communities.鈥

Hernandez, who will graduate in May 2026, plans to pursue a career in investment banking while also exploring real estate investment. She said her time at ACC Capital has helped her refine critical skills that will support her career ambitions.

鈥淭his internship has given me a true glimpse into what my future could look like on a day-to-day basis,鈥 she said. 鈥淏alancing school, work, and this internship has strengthened my time management skills. I鈥檝e also learned to approach challenges more strategically and with a broader perspective. These experiences have given me a stronger sense of professionalism and purpose in pursuing a career in finance.鈥

One event that left a lasting impression on Hernandez was Credit to Capital, a financial literacy event hosted by ACC Capital.

鈥淎fter the event, an older woman approached Adriana Fuentes, the vice president of community development, in tears thanking her for the opportunity,鈥 Hernandez said. 鈥淪he said the event gave her a renewed sense of hope and a better understanding of how to improve her credit and finances. It made me realize how many people still lack access to essential resources like financial literacy. It reinforced my desire to work in a field where I can help others gain the tools they need to succeed financially.鈥

For Hernandez, the internship has also offered lessons she couldn鈥檛 have learned in a classroom.

鈥淲hile textbooks and lectures provide foundational knowledge, working in a real-world environment has shown me how to apply that knowledge in practical, meaningful ways,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e experienced what it鈥檚 like to work a 9-to-5 schedule, attend diverse meetings, and contribute to projects that have a real impact. It鈥檚 taught me how to navigate a professional setting, communicate effectively with different departments, and think critically beyond the academic setting.鈥

Beyond her coursework and internship, Hernandez is also actively involved on campus. She is a founding member of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Colony of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., where she serves as treasurer and academic chairwoman, and she recently joined the Finance Club to expand her knowledge and network within the industry.

Hernandez said her experiences at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and ACC Capital have given her confidence in her ability to succeed after graduation.

鈥淚 feel like this internship brought everything I鈥檝e learned in the classroom to life,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t has prepared me for my future career in ways that go beyond academics. It鈥檚 been a unique opportunity that I鈥檒l carry with me as I take the next steps in finance.鈥

This summer, the seven students were placed at internship sites using Handshake, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 online recruiting platform.

In the summer of 2023, three 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students participated in the inaugural Jewelry and Metalsmithing Internship Program created by Professor Lydia Martin, a Windgate Artist-in-Residence, in partnership with Career Services and the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education.

Bob Baldridge, Bailey Holley, and Brice Horn are three jewelry and metalsmithing students who partook in the program that culminated in a four-week out-of-state internship. Bob Baldridge interned with the Baltimore Jewelry Center, Bailey Holley interned with Halstead Bead Company in Prescott, Arizona, and Brice Horn interned with Heather Guidero Jewelry in Providence, Rhode Island.

Martin, who started at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in the fall of 2021 as a Windgate Artist-in-Residence, created the program with collaborative mentorship in mind. Students first applied for the program, they were mentored by Martin herself, then the students conducted a research project in a field of their interest.

鈥淓ach internship created was individualized to fit the needs of the partnering organization and the interests of the students,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淲hile my mentorship is closely tied to the studio classroom and how best to prepare students for an upcoming experience such as this, the mentorship received from the partnering organization was specialized, as all three were outside of the realm of my expertise.鈥

From traveling and teaching to networking and learning about the industry, each student鈥檚 internship experience differed based on their interests.

鈥淢y favorite part of the internship was having the chance to teach two free spoon-forging workshops to people in the local community,鈥 Baldridge, who interned with the Baltimore Jewelry Center, said. 鈥淚t was so much fun and inspiring to have that experience while I鈥檓 still in school and was affirmation that I am on the right path.鈥

Holley, who interned with Halstead Bead Company, noticed the difference between her experience in school and her experience in the field.

鈥淭his opportunity allowed me to travel and get a professional, real-world artist experience outside of academia,鈥 Holley said. 鈥淭his led me to realize how important it is going to be for my future that I keep traveling, networking, and learning among other creatives.鈥

With internship funding supplemented by Career Services at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education, and through Signature Experience Grants, the three students were paid for their work.

鈥淲e were excited to partner with students in the jewelry and metalsmithing program,鈥 Brittany Straw, director of Career Services, said. 鈥淭his partnership gives students the opportunity to participate in internships that they might not have been able to participate in otherwise.鈥

鈥淲hat Professor Martin has created represents best practices in ensuring students have access to high-quality experiential learning opportunities that improve their social, human, and creative capital,鈥 said Dr. Sarah Beth Estes, dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education.
