At first glance, University of Arkansas at Little Rock student Jessica Limbaugh seems to live in two different worlds. At work, she thrives in the fast-paced transportation and logistics industry. In the classroom, she dives into her passion for history, philosophy, and religious studies.

From auditing freight costs to exploring belief systems that have shaped entire civilizations, her story is anything but ordinary.

Even her start at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was unconventional. Limbaugh began as a chemistry major in 2007, but life took her in another direction. After stepping away from college for several years and building a career in transportation, she鈥檚 returned to the classroom.

“When I first attended college, I was not the student I am today,” Limbaugh said. “Returning as an adult gave me a very different perspective. I returned to school with renewed focus and passion. I am now fully committed and determined to achieve a goal I had set for myself years earlier.”

While history and logistics may seem like an unlikely pair, she sees them as deeply intertwined. Her lifelong fascination with history has given her a broader perspective on the transportation industry, helping her see how the movement of people and goods has shaped societies for centuries. From Roman roads and maritime trade routes to today鈥檚 global supply chains, she sees transportation at the heart of economic growth and social change.

鈥淗istory influences everything, and knowledge of history helps inform decisions, understand motivations, and contextualize the world we live in,鈥 said Limbaugh. 鈥淯nderstanding the origins of a system can often provide valuable insights into its future.鈥

Limbaugh鈥檚 dedication to both her studies and her career has recently been recognized by two communities important to her journey. She received the Richard B. Dixon Undergraduate Scholarship, awarded to a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock history major, as well as the Scholarship in the leadership category 鈥 a national honor supporting women who are advancing their education and professional development in the trucking and transportation industry. For her, what has meant the most is knowing that people see value in the work she has put into both her education and her career, and that others believe in what she is trying to accomplish.

“As an adult student balancing school and a full-time career, there have certainly been challenges along the way,” Limbaugh said. “What has meant the most is knowing that people saw value in the work I have put into both my education and my career.”

Despite working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, she considers herself fortunate to have built her career within a women-led organization, where she has been surrounded by strong female mentors. Witnessing women in leadership roles from the start inspired her to envision similar paths for herself. Her involvement with Women in Trucking further reinforced the value of mentorship and the importance of creating opportunities for others.

“The support I have received has reinforced my belief that women like me have an important role to play in shaping the future of the industry,” Limbaugh said.

Looking ahead, Limbaugh plans to pursue a master’s degree in supply chain management and continue growing within the transportation industry. She hopes to move into a leadership role where she can help develop team members and create opportunities for others, just as mentors did for her throughout her career.

As she continues working toward those goals, she encourages other women considering careers in transportation鈥攐r adults thinking about returning to college鈥攖o believe in themselves and embrace opportunities, even when the path ahead feels uncertain. She hopes her story shows that following your interests, even when they seem worlds apart, can lead to rewarding and unexpected opportunities.

“Returning to school as an adult and building a career in transportation were not part of the plan I made in high school, but those experiences shaped the person I am today 鈥 and I like that person,” Limbaugh said.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is helping position Arkansas at the forefront of quantum computing through a collaborative effort to expand education and workforce development opportunities across the state.

The effort recently secured a $96,313 National Science Foundation award to support its next phase of development. The funding follows a statewide workshop that brought together more than 25 leaders from higher education, industry, government and research organizations.

The Emerging Analytics Center and the Department of Computer Science recently hosted the Statewide Quantum Computing Working Group Workshop, focused on developing a shared framework for quantum computing education in Arkansas.

Held May 28-29, the workshop included representatives from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, the University of Central Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Arkansas Tech University, Southern Arkansas University, the Arkansas Research Alliance, Dakota State University and Oklahoma State University. Industry partners, including IBM, Qunnect and Fortinet, also participated.

鈥淭he Emerging Analytics Center and the Department of Computer Science organized the workshop to address the critical need for a statewide educational framework that prepares a skilled STEM workforce for the rapidly evolving field of quantum information science,鈥 said Tom Coffin, senior visualization and operations manager for the Emerging Analytics Center.

Quantum computing uses the principles of quantum mechanics to solve complex problems beyond the reach of many traditional computers. Unlike conventional computers that process information as either a 0 or a 1, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, that can exist in multiple states simultaneously, allowing them to process large amounts of information more efficiently.

Industry experts project quantum computing could become a trillion-dollar industry within the next decade, creating significant opportunities for states that invest early. Arkansas institutions hope to prepare students for careers in the growing field by building educational pathways now.

One of the workshop’s primary goals was to establish a Statewide Quantum Computing Working Group and develop a foundational curriculum that can be adopted by educational institutions across Arkansas. The initiative aims to create a unified framework that serves learners at multiple levels while leveraging expertise from academic, industry and government partners.

For 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students, faculty and researchers, the initiative will provide access to specialized training opportunities, hands-on experience with quantum hardware and cloud-based systems, and future professional development activities. Organizers also plan to host a statewide Quantum Hackathon in 2027.

Supported by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, the workshop helped lay the foundation for the initiative’s next phase. Beginning in July 2026, the NSF-funded project will formalize and expand the Statewide Quantum Computing Working Group while advancing curriculum development, workforce training and collaboration among partners across the state.

Looking ahead, Coffin said the initiative could help establish Arkansas as a leader in quantum information science while supporting economic growth and attracting technology-focused industries.

鈥淏y establishing a sustainable educational ecosystem, the initiative hopes to drive economic growth, attract new industries, and prepare a diverse, highly skilled STEM workforce capable of meeting the demands of an evolving job market,鈥 Coffin said. 鈥淭he goal is to provide a new generation of students with the technical skills needed for high-demand careers in quantum hardware, networking and software development.鈥

The effort continues this summer with the Introduction to Quantum Computing and Quantum Machine Learning Workshop, scheduled for June 25-26. The workshop will provide additional opportunities for students, educators and researchers interested in the field.

More 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students are finding connection, leadership opportunities, and a sense of belonging through fraternity and sorority life.

Fraternity and sorority membership at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock grew from 62 students in 2024-25 to 141 students in 2025-26, an increase of more than 127% and the largest fraternity and sorority community the university has seen in several years. The growth spans multiple councils and organizations, reflecting renewed student interest in leadership development, service opportunities, and campus involvement.

Alicia Sustaita, Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, said the increase reflects a stronger effort by Greek organizations to connect with students and showcase the opportunities available through membership.

鈥淪tudents are looking for meaningful ways to become involved on campus, and our Greek organizations have done an excellent job of showcasing the leadership, service, academic support, and lifelong friendships they provide,鈥 Sustaita said.

Fraternities and sororities at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provide students with opportunities to participate in community service, philanthropy, leadership development, academic support, and professional networking. Members often serve in leadership positions, organize campus events, and volunteer in the community while building lasting friendships with fellow students.

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s fraternity and sorority community comprises four governing councils representing a variety of organizations and traditions. The College Panhellenic Council oversees Chi Omega and Kappa Delta, while the Interfraternity Council governs Delta Chi and Kappa Sigma.

The Multicultural Greek Council includes Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha. The National Pan-Hellenic Council includes Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Sustaita said fraternity and sorority life helps students find community while building skills that contribute to their success at the university.

鈥淕reek life enhances the student experience by creating smaller communities within the larger university environment,鈥 Sustaita said. 鈥淢embers have access to mentorship, leadership opportunities, community service initiatives, and campus involvement experiences that help them develop both personally and professionally.鈥

Some students say joining a fraternity or sorority provides a pathway to deeper involvement in campus life.

鈥淚 did not ever think that I would be involved with Greek life,鈥 said Amaya Mendoza, a junior, president of the College Panhellenic Council, and member of Chi Omega. 鈥淚 had no interest in being in any student organizations, but I thought recruitment would be a good way to make friends. As soon as I met the women in Chi Omega, I knew where I wanted to be. I fell in love instantly with our philanthropy, our mission, and the values that aligned with my own.鈥

Mendoza said the relationships she has built through Greek life have had a lasting impact on her college experience.

鈥淚 never thought I would be able to describe my college experience as easy, but the women in Chi Omega have made it pretty close,鈥 Mendoza said. 鈥淚n a year where everything in my life was changing, Chi Omega was constant. Despite being miles from family and a state away, my sisters helped Little Rock feel like home.鈥

For Khari Wiley, senior student and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., joining a Greek organization began with learning more about the organizations represented on campus and finding one whose values matched her own.

鈥淗onestly, I never grew up around anyone Greek, so when I came to campus, I first wanted to watch how each organization carried themselves and how they interacted with other people,鈥 Wiley said. 鈥淎fter doing my research, my choice was clear. The purpose, the community service, and the principles all aligned with things that I would like to accomplish.鈥

Wiley said membership helped her become more confident and connected to the campus community.

鈥淏efore becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I was really quiet and stayed in my room most of the time,鈥 Wiley said. 鈥淪ince joining, I have gained a whole lot of sisters who are constantly helping me and uplifting me. I have been able to host events on campus and interact with so many new people. The connections I have made will stay with me for a lifetime.鈥

Students say Greek organizations offer opportunities to form meaningful relationships, develop leadership skills, and participate in service initiatives that make a difference both on campus and in the community.

Sustaita said the continued growth of fraternity and sorority life reflects the important role Greek organizations play in creating an engaged and welcoming campus community.

鈥淥ur Greek organizations play an important role in creating an engaged and welcoming campus community,鈥 Sustaita said. 鈥淕reek life is about much more than membership; it is about building community, fostering personal and professional growth, and preparing students for success beyond graduation.鈥

Dr. Nitin Agarwal, Maulden-Entergy Chair and Donaghey Distinguished Professor of Information Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has received a $5 million research award from the U.S. Department of War to advance innovative approaches for protecting communities from online influence campaigns and other emerging cognitive threats.

The project focuses on developing socio-computational methods to strengthen community resilience against cognitive attacks. These attacks include coordinated online efforts to manipulate beliefs, influence behavior, and spread harmful narratives through social media and digital platforms. The research builds on nationally recognized work underway at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Collaboratorium for Social Media and Online Behavioral Studies (COSMOS) Research Center, which Agarwal founded and directs.

The COSMOS Research Center at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock conducts interdisciplinary research focused on social computing, AI-enabled socio-cognitive threat mitigation, narrative analytics, online behavioral modeling, and cognitive security.

The award was championed through support from U.S. Sen. John Boozman, who highlighted the importance of the research to national security.

鈥淚 am pleased to support 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and its Collaboratorium for Social Media and Online Behavioral Studies,鈥 Boozman said. 鈥淭his award recognizes the significance of this program to our national security. The important research conducted here will enhance our ability to counter the use of novel social media tactics by foreign extremists and terrorist groups threatening the United States and our allies.鈥

Agarwal said the funding will allow researchers to continue developing advanced tools and capabilities to better understand how online narratives influence behavior and how communities can build resilience against coordinated manipulation efforts.

鈥淲e are extremely grateful for the support from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock leadership and U.S. Sen. John Boozman for championing this vital research,鈥 Agarwal said. 鈥淭his funding allows the COSMOS Research Center to continue advancing analytical capabilities that strengthen our nation’s defense against cognitive threats.鈥

As social media platforms increasingly shape public discourse, coordinated influence operations have emerged as a growing challenge for governments, organizations, and communities. The project seeks to provide science-driven approaches for detecting harmful narratives, understanding how they spread through online networks, and informing effective intervention strategies before they result in real-world consequences.

鈥淪ocial media has evolved into a contested cognitive battlespace where narratives can be weaponized to manipulate beliefs, sow discord, and influence collective behavior at unprecedented speed,鈥 Agarwal said. 鈥淭his project aims to strengthen community resiliency by developing computational methods that help identify harmful narrative dynamics early, understand how they spread across networks, and inform effective intervention strategies.鈥

The project will advance research in six key areas, including narrative and network modeling, toxicity in online communities, mob dynamics, churn analysis, contextual network characterization, and large-scale data collection and dashboarding.

Researchers will develop new methods to analyze how narratives emerge and evolve across digital ecosystems, examine how online communities amplify coordinated campaigns, and adapt epidemiological modeling techniques to better understand the spread of toxicity in online environments.

In addition to advancing research, the initiative will support workforce development and training opportunities in big data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and security applications, helping prepare the next generation of AI and cybersecurity professionals in Arkansas and beyond.

The award continues a longstanding partnership between the COSMOS Research Center and the U.S. Department of War in advancing research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, social computing, and national security.

With this award, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock continues to expand its national research footprint, leveraging expertise in artificial intelligence and social computing to develop solutions that strengthen communities and enhance security in an increasingly connected world.

Andrew Pyle’s passion for teaching and student success has guided his career in higher education and recently led to his appointment as associate dean of undergraduate learning at Clemson University.

Pyle earned a Master of Arts in Applied Communication Studies from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2011.

鈥淚 was honored to be selected,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淭he other candidates are really wonderful, highly qualified colleagues of mine, so it was humbling to be chosen for the role.鈥

As associate dean of undergraduate learning, Pyle will help shape Clemson’s undergraduate experience by overseeing initiatives related to student learning and the university’s general education curriculum. His work begins by listening, building relationships, and identifying opportunities for improvement.

鈥淢y primary goal starting in this new role is to get a good sense of where we have opportunities and where things aren鈥檛 working like they should in the General Education curriculum,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淚 anticipate my first 6-12 months will primarily be learning the landscape, building relationships, and making sense of data to get a picture of where there are bottlenecks or where things need to be adjusted or updated.鈥

Pyle said his enthusiasm for helping students learn and grow was shaped by the teachers and mentors who invested in him throughout his academic journey, including several faculty members at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

鈥淚鈥檝e had such wonderful teachers and mentors during my academic career, including some amazing folks in applied communication at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淚n my work as a professor, I always look for ways to connect with and create opportunities for students. I鈥檓 excited about this new role because it is all about ensuring that our undergraduate student experience is a strong one.鈥

Pyle’s connection to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock began while he was completing his undergraduate degree at Ouachita Baptist University. During that time, he took a course taught by Dr. Linda Pledger, a retired 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty member who encouraged him to consider the university’s graduate program in Applied Communication Studies.

鈥淪he knew that I was interested in an academic career, and she recommended that I take a look at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for my graduate studies,鈥 Pyle said.

After meeting with then-department chair Dr. Rob Ulmer, Pyle said he quickly realized he had found the right place to continue his education.

鈥淗e convinced me that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was the right place for me to continue my academic journey,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淗e was right. I had a marvelous experience with the wonderful people in applied communication.鈥

Those experiences proved foundational to the educator and leader he would become.

Pyle credits his graduate assistantship and the mentorship of faculty members with shaping the way he teaches, mentors, and leads today. He specifically highlighted the influence of Dr. Kristen McIntyre, who served as both an instructor and supervisor during his time as a graduate assistant.

鈥淒r. McIntyre鈥檚 course and her mentorship during my time as a GA shaped the way that I teach and train others, and those are lessons I still apply to my teaching and mentoring today,鈥 Pyle said.

He also pointed to Ulmer’s leadership as a model he continues to follow.

鈥淚 try to emulate his leadership style,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淗e was kind and supportive, but also challenged me to grow and develop. He had the humility to own his mistakes, which is unfortunately atypical in organizational structures.鈥

Before being named associate dean, Pyle served as interim director of Clemson’s National Scholars Program and as undergraduate coordinator for Clemson’s Department of Communication. He said those experiences provided valuable preparation for his new responsibilities.

Looking ahead, Pyle hopes his work will strengthen the student experience for future generations of Clemson students.

鈥淢y hope is that I will be able to meaningfully contribute to work that will improve the undergraduate student experience at Clemson,鈥 Pyle said.

For students interested in pursuing careers in higher education, communication, or academic leadership, Pyle encourages gaining firsthand experience in research and teaching while staying patient as leadership opportunities develop.

Faculty jobs are research positions at most institutions, so students need to understand that from the outset, Pyle said.

鈥淎dditionally, I would encourage students to pursue training and development as teachers,鈥 he said.

For those considering administrative roles, he offered a simple piece of advice.

鈥淒on鈥檛 rush into an administrative role simply because it鈥檚 available,鈥 Pyle said. 鈥淭hink about your interests and skills, as well as all the ways that moving into an administrative role will change your work dynamic. It鈥檚 a big change. Make sure you鈥檙e ready for that kind of upheaval.鈥

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is making its largest investment in graduate assistant stipends in more than a decade, increasing financial support for master’s and doctoral students beginning this fall.

Beginning in Fall 2026, the university will raise the minimum stipend for master’s-level graduate assistants from $8,000 to $10,000 for a nine-month appointment. Doctoral-level graduate assistants will see their minimum stipend increase from $13,000 to $15,000.

Graduate assistantships allow students to pursue advanced degrees while gaining hands-on experience in research, teaching, and university operations. In addition to a stipend, assistantships may include tuition benefits that help offset the cost of graduate school.

“I am sensitive to the financial pressures that our graduate students face and the impact that rising costs have had on them,” said Dr. Brian Berry, vice provost of research and dean of the Graduate School. “I am committed to continuing this discussion and progressing toward competitive GA stipends.”

The increase continues a trend of growing university investment in graduate student support. Five years ago, the minimum stipend for master’s-level graduate assistants was approximately $6,000. Two years ago, it was raised to $8,000. This fall’s increase to $10,000 marks the latest step in the university’s efforts to address rising costs for graduate students.

Graduate assistants serve in a variety of roles across campus. Some assist faculty with research projects, while others support classroom instruction, work in administrative offices, or contribute to projects related to their field of study.

Beyond financial assistance, assistantships provide students with practical experience that complements their academic work and helps prepare them for careers in higher education, industry, government, nonprofit organizations, and other professional fields.

The increased stipends also help 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock remain competitive in attracting and retaining talented graduate students.

Students interested in graduate assistantship opportunities can learn more through the Graduate School and individual academic programs. Assistantships are available in a variety of disciplines across the university.

For Gina and Brett Pharis, supporting 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Enduring Opportunity Scholarship program is an investment in the students who will shape the future of Central Arkansas.

“When I learned about Enduring Opportunity, I looked it up and realized it was right in line with my desire to support scholarships,鈥 Gina Pharis said.聽

Longtime supporters of both 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and Little Rock Public Radio, they have remained actively engaged with the university for years. Their latest gift of $25,000 to create the Gina and Brett Pharis Enduring Opportunity Scholarship expands that commitment while helping more students pursue a college degree.

“The university helped shape who I became,” Pharis said.

As a theatre student, she overcame her fear of speaking in front of an audience and discovered new opportunities through coursework in radio, television, and film.

“I learned about radio, television, and film and went on to work at my one and only radio job at KARN in 1985,” she said.

The lessons she learned extended beyond the classroom. The relationships she built with faculty and fellow students left a lasting impact.

“I was even invited to one of my professor’s retirement parties,” Pharis said. “The connections I made through all those impactful college days bring me back to the school.”

Years later, serving on the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Board gave her a deeper understanding of the role philanthropy plays in supporting students and advancing the university’s mission.

“Honestly, serving on the Alumni Board enlightened me to give in a philanthropic way,” she said.

Through their support of Enduring Opportunity, Gina and Brett Pharis hope to help more students earn a degree while reducing the financial burdens that can stand in the way of graduation.

“The impact will be substantial,” Pharis said. “It will be measured in the number of graduates over the coming years and the success of each student receiving that diploma with little to zero tuition debt. The smile on students’ faces will be worth every penny.”

The couple also sees the scholarship as an investment in the future of Little Rock and Arkansas.

“This program is designed to help each student have less stress and recognize how 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is helping them succeed, creating loyalty,” Pharis said. “The business community is working closely with departments all over campus scouting local talent. We are keeping students in Central Arkansas. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is a gold mine for the businesses of Little Rock.”

As longtime supporters of the university, Gina and Brett hope others will find ways to stay connected and support future generations of students.

“I would ask every graduate to stay in touch,” Pharis said. “Join the Alumni Association, stay connected, and find ways to be involved. I would also encourage business owners who have a connection to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to get involved on a deeper level. Find their passion and support it.”

For Gina and Brett Pharis, supporting Enduring Opportunity is both a way to give back to a university that made a lasting impact on their lives and an investment in the students who will help shape Arkansas’s future.

A week ago, they were strangers from communities across Arkansas.

By the end of the AI Hackathon and HealthTech at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, they had become teammates, budding entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers, developing innovative solutions focused on dementia care, maternal health, insurance access, mental health, and patient services.

Resonate Wins $10,000 Grand Prize

The hackathon’s top honor and $10,000 grand prize went to Resonate, a music therapy platform designed to improve access to music therapy for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The idea was inspired by a story shared by a dementia care professional who described a patient who began humming along to a familiar song after years without speaking. The experience demonstrated how music can help unlock memories and create meaningful connections for people living with dementia.

The Resonate team developed a platform that creates personalized music playlists based on a patient’s preferences and uses AI-powered voice analysis to help caregivers identify emotional states and recommend music that may provide comfort and support. The team focused particularly on making music therapy more accessible and affordable for families in rural and underserved communities.

“The question is not whether music therapy works, but rather how to make it accessible and affordable,” the team told judges during its final presentation.

Team Resonate included Aras Erdag and Brodie Smith of Little Rock; Cami Gonzalez, Satya Achanti, and Shreyan Movva of Bentonville; Joshua Davis of Conway; Koree Arndt of Bella Vista; and Tanvi Virani of Lamar.

Team members said collaboration played a major role in their success throughout the week.

“This experience was really fun,” said Satya Achanti. “We learned a lot of different things from different workshops, and we had a lot of teamwork and a lot of dedicated time that we spent. We stayed up late many nights, and we’re very happy that we won.”

Shreyan Movva credited the team’s ability to work together throughout the competition.

“Overall, team contribution and team cooperation helped us a lot, and it feels great to win,” he said.

For Koree Arndt, one of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the opportunity to collaborate with students from across the state.

“My team’s amazing. I’ve met so many amazing people, and I’ve loved the chance to work on leadership, work on developing my skills in tech, and just building things, because I love to build,” Arndt said.

InsuraMatch Earns Second Place

The second-place prize of $5,000 went to InsuraMatch, a platform designed to help users better understand and navigate health insurance options.

The team focused on addressing the confusion many consumers face when selecting healthcare coverage. Their platform uses conversational AI, educational resources, and cost-comparison tools to help users understand insurance terminology and identify plans that best fit their needs.

The InsuraMatch team included Blessing Itodo of Little Rock, Dilasa Yaman of North Little Rock, Eric Wang of Cave Springs, Ishmam Solaiman of Little Rock, Krish Mehta of Conway, Pfeiffer Slaveski of Centerton, and Yogi Patel of Little Rock.

Materna Takes Third Place

The third-place prize of $3,000 went to Materna, a wearable health monitoring platform designed to support pregnant women in rural Arkansas

Combining a wearable bracelet, mobile application, and AI-powered monitoring tools, Materna allows healthcare providers to remotely monitor patient vital signs and identify potential health risks. The team developed the project to address transportation barriers, healthcare deserts, and limited access to prenatal care in many rural communities across the state.

The Materna team included Ali Rizwan of Cabot, Alyson Chapman of Centerton, Sach Gulmammadov of Jonesboro, Isidora Adeloa and Ivonne Barbosa-Melgarejo of Little Rock, and Kshitiz Khatiwada and Pronita Ghimire of Monticello.

Students Tackle Diverse Healthcare Challenges

Other teams also developed solutions addressing a wide range of healthcare and wellness concerns.

The team behind Mind Bloom created an AI-powered student wellness platform designed to help schools identify and support students experiencing stress and mental health challenges. Team members included Anay Pandit of Benton, Hannah Robertson, Jake Hu, Luke Wang, Rudra Pratap Mukherjee, and Vishak Meenachi of Little Rock, Joel Johnson of Bentonville, and Tanisha Virani of Lamar.

Another notable project, Bro 2 Bro, focused on improving mental and physical health outcomes among Black men by connecting users with support groups, healthcare resources, mentors, and community organizations through trusted spaces such as barbershops and churches.

Students also developed Sirona, a solution aimed at reducing emergency room wait times and improving patient flow.

While the projects varied in focus, they shared a common goal: using technology to address real-world healthcare challenges affecting Arkansas communities.

Over the course of the week, students transformed ideas into prototypes, business plans, and presentations evaluated by healthcare and industry leaders. In the end, 30 students won a combined $20,000 in prize money, but, more importantly, demonstrated what can happen when some of Arkansas’s brightest young minds spend a week reimagining healthcare.

“What I was most excited about coming into this event was to meet the people,” Arndt said. “I’ve met so many amazing people, and I’m just so grateful to have the opportunity to be here and do what I love.”
