The Clinton Presidential Center is partnering with the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in celebration of Black History Month, hosting the ABHOF Distinguished Laureate Series XIV, honoring operatic soprano Kristin Lewis. Dr. Linda Holzer, university professor of music at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, will collaborate with Lewis at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center.

鈥淚t means so much to have the opportunity to join Kristin Lewis in performing selections by African American composers Harry Burleigh, Shelton Becton, and Moses Hogan,鈥� Holzer said. 鈥淭he program will begin with a conversation with Ms. Lewis, reflecting on her operatic career and the importance of the arts.鈥�

A 2019 inductee of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, Lewis is a Little Rock native who has taken the opera world by storm as a lyrico-spinto soprano, best known and praised for her interpretations of composer Giuseppe Verdi鈥榮 operatic heroines. She is the recipient of a bevy of awards, including Artist of the Year, Oscars of the Opera Award, the Opera Prize, and the Audience Award.

The 2015-16 opera season featured Lewis in her house debut at Carnegie Hall as Soprano Soloist with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, and she has performed in some of the most prestigious opera houses and theaters in the world, giving life to the works of some of the world鈥檚 most renowned composers. She created the Kristin Lewis Foundation, Inc., to shine a spotlight on younger musicians and to foster the discovery and appreciation of opera and musical cultures.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The concert will also feature members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for a special piano trio.

The performance, which includes piano solo and piano trio, highlights the piano’s versatility and the timeless beauty of chamber music. It opens with the world premiere of 鈥淪easons: Autumnal鈥� by Gideon Brewer, an audio engineer from the School of Literary and Performing Arts. Also featured in the first half are selections by Fr茅d茅ric Chopin, ragtime gem 鈥淕race and Beauty鈥� by James Scott, a mesmerizing etude by Philip Glass, and dramatic movements from 鈥淎leppo Songs鈥� by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom.

The second half of the program is devoted to Clara Schumann’s evocative Romantic-era chamber music work, 鈥淧iano Trio in G Minor, Opus 17.鈥� Holzer will be joined by Arkansas Symphony Orchestra musicians, violinist Sandra McDonald and cellist Joanna Klett, for the piano trio. Holzer and McDonald are a seasoned duo, having performed together for over 25 years

鈥淭his program invites listeners on an imaginative journey through time and sound,鈥� Holzer said. 鈥淚n part, it is a celebration of my 30th year on the faculty at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The first half will close with a surprise, a thrilling piano solo composed by Jon Batiste! His music is infused with elements of jazz, classical, and soul, a special joy to play.鈥�

Holzer joined 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 1995. Along with being a university professor of music, she is also the coordinator of piano studies in the music program, which is housed in the School of Literary and Performing Arts. An active soloist and chamber musician, she has been heard in concert in 30 states and abroad in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, and China.
