The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a solo exhibit for Ashi Franke, the 2023-24 recipient of the Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Scholarship, from May 20 to June 9.

Leslye Shellam, the daughter of Linda Blaine Flake and L. Dickson Flake, created the scholarship in 2021 to honor her mother, who was an artist. The scholarship recipient also has the opportunity to feature their work in a solo exhibit at the Windgate Center of Art and Design.

鈥淭hough recognized as 鈥榞ifted鈥 from an early age, Linda knew that knowledge and experimentation to new, unfamiliar ideas kept her work fresh and inspired,鈥 Shellam said. 鈥淭he endowment in her name is intended to allow an art student more time for curiosity and self-exploration to channel their talent into a lifelong contribution to the rest of us who may need to be reminded of the 鈥榰ndefined鈥 that encourages personal creativity of all forms in each of us.鈥

The exhibition, 鈥淎shi Franke: Linda Blaine Flake Endowment Art Scholarship Exhibition,鈥 will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design. A reception will be held for the exhibition from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the Windgate Center.

The exhibition is a retrospective of Franke鈥檚 journey as an artist over the past decade. It covers work from when she started as a student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2014 to her graduation this spring, when she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design, three minors in art history, digital graphics, and studio arts, as well as a technical certificate in graphic design.

鈥淭he exhibition covers 10 years of my time as a student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 Franke said. 鈥淚 will have many individual pieces that include graphic design, photography, ceramics, painting, and illustration. The pieces will be organized chronologically so visitors can go on a journey of my art over time.鈥

For many years, Franke never thought she would pursue art other than graphic design, but her time at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock inspired her to grow as an artist.

鈥淚鈥檝e grown a lot in the past 10 years, and it will be very exciting to show my artistic journey as an interdisciplinary artist,鈥 Franke said. 鈥淚鈥檝e allowed myself to grow in places that I didn鈥檛 expect, and this exhibition is my way to share that with the campus. I had my entire life mapped out, and it was all framed around me being a graphic designer. I didn鈥檛 turn out to be the person I thought I would be, but I鈥檓 much happier with the person I turned out to be.鈥

All 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. The galleries are closed on university holidays.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a photography exhibit of 鈥淪tructures That Transformed Education鈥 from Jan. 22 to Feb. 23.

The photography exhibit will be on display in the Focus Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design with a reception with artist Mark Wittig from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. The exhibit focuses on photographing and building architectural sculptures of schools that played a role in changing education in America from 1724 to 1974. This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Arkansas Arts Council.

鈥淭o create the architectural sculptures of school buildings, I use computer-aided design software to layout the parts of the structure, then I use a laser cutter to precisely cut out the parts, and then hand assemble the parts,鈥 Wittig said. 鈥淲hen building the architectural sculptures, I am continuing the precedent set by William Christenberry who translated some of the buildings he photographed into sculptures.鈥

His work has been displayed nationally and internationally in the academic journal Postdigital Science and Education, the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Millepiani Exhibition Space in Rome, Italy, the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Gimpo, Korea, the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the Firehouse Gallery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa.

Wittig has worked as an architect, educator, and artist. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Drawing and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Open Media from the University of Tulsa.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Art Gallery will open its 2024 season with two exhibitions featuring great examples of illustration from Arkansas-based artists as well as selected works from the Goodspeed Collection.

The first exhibition, 鈥淚llustration: Art That Works,鈥 will be on display in the Brad Cushman Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from Jan. 17 to Feb. 18. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Windgate Center.

鈥淚llustration, like graphic design, is looked upon as a 鈥榩ractical arts鈥 degree because, along with freelance work being common to both fields, illustrators can seek employment with newspapers and magazine publishers, can work in the gaming industry, in animation, as comic book and graphic novel illustrations, and as concept artist and production designers,鈥 said Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director and curator. 鈥淚llustrators work digitally and in more traditional media like painting and drawing, but also move between digital and traditional media. In this exhibition, Arkansas-based illustrators who work in a variety of media and in equally varied employment are brought together to represent what is possible in the field of Illustration.鈥

Artists whose work will be displayed in the exhibition include Robert Bean, Nikki Dawes, Sean Fitzgibbon, Dusty Higgins, Layet Johnson, Kirk Montgomery, Sally Nixon, Michele Noiset, David O’Brien, Kasten Searles, and Ricky Sikes.

In the second exhibition, a group of artwork from the personal collection of Henry Goodspeed, a retired financial advisor living in Little Rock, will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center from Jan. 17 to March 3. A reception for the exhibition, 鈥淕oodspeed Collection: Stories,鈥 will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Windgate Center. The exhibition will include examples of photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking, and fiber works.

鈥淭his collection is an idiosyncratic reflection, a love for art, and an appreciation for art that spans media, style, and eras,鈥 Larson said. 鈥淓ach artwork has a story about how it came to be in Henry鈥檚 collection or has a story which is an integral aspect of the artwork itself.鈥

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Galleries in the Windgate Center are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. 鈥 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host an exhibition featuring the artwork of Laura Raborn, an Arkansas artist and teacher, from Dec. 11 to Jan. 12.

The 鈥淟aura Raborn: Words Create Reality鈥 exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be on display in the Focus Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from Dec. 11, 2023, to Jan. 12, 2024. Her artwork includes acrylic on paper, acrylic and oil on canva-paper, and acrylic, charcoal, graphite, and pencil on paper. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Windgate Center.

鈥淭he art making process prompts me to see the humanity of every person I paint,鈥 Raborn said in an artist statement. 鈥淚 often present a solitary figure rather than a group. While multiple figures interact with each other, the single figure interacts with me as the artist and, later, with the viewer. Making and viewing the art becomes a way to spend time with the person, as if we exist together in another reality. While the materials and methods I use vary, resulting in multiple bodies of work, the underlying theme of all the work is to reflect how we view each other in modern times.鈥

Raborn earned a Bachelor of Art degree from Rollins College and a master鈥檚 degree in art from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She has participated in three prestigious art residencies at the Women鈥檚 International Study Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia, and Breck Create in Breckenridge, Colorado. She has taught mixed media workshops in art schools such as the Ah Haa School for the Arts in Telluride, Colorado, Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, and Schola Artis Pro Vobis in Assisi, Italy.

Raborn鈥檚 paintings are exhibited in multiple collections in Arkansas, the U.S., and the Bahamas. Her work has earned numerous awards and has appeared in publications such as 鈥淲omen Make Arkansas: Conversations with 50 Creatives鈥 by Erin Wood of Et Alia Press.

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Galleries in the Windgate Center are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. 鈥 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
