The School of Art and Design welcomes Carly Machen鈥檚 MA Thesis Photography Exhibition, 鈥淭his is What it Feels Like.鈥 The exhibition will be in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design until April 21, and it is free and open to the public.

Machen鈥檚 artist talk will be held on Thursday, April 4, from 6-7 p.m. in Lecture Room 101 in the Windgate Center of Art and Design, and a reception will follow.

Working toward her Master of Arts with a concentration in visual art, Machen is a student in the School of Art and Design. Her exhibition features 16 photographs taken by Machen herself.

鈥淚n these theatrical scenes, I incorporate myself and the ephemera I am drawn to such as old dolls, decaying nature, and broken mannequins,鈥 Machen said in her artist statement. 鈥淢any of these items hold symbolic power, functioning as objects do in Baroque Dutch Vanitas paintings.鈥

Her statement closes with a reflection on the themes of her work: 鈥淭hriving and rotting, hope and loss, isolation and connection: these are integral for me in my life-long journey of self-exploration. Through my work, I am able to shine a light on the intricate web of emotions and complex layers of existence.鈥

You can visit Machen鈥檚 exhibition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2-5 p.m. on Sundays. The gallery is closed on university holidays.

For more information, contact Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director and curator, at 501-916-5104 or nglarson@ualr.edu.

A solo photography exhibition featuring the work of Gary Cawood, a professor emeritus at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and fine art photographer, will open Jan. 19 in the Loft Gallery of The ARTSpace in Pine Bluff.

Cawood鈥檚 exhibition, 鈥淕ary Cawood: Field Notes, explores human-altered landscapes.

鈥淲hile humans alter the landscape, nature continually reasserts its force,鈥 Cawood said in an artist statement. 鈥淪hiny and new becomes rusted and worn. Unintended plant life proliferates. My purpose is to celebrate this process visually, with the graduated scale as a perfect counterpoint to the random effects of nature.鈥

Cawood added that he also enhances the ambiguity of his photographs by obscuring the sense of scale.

鈥淭o further enhance the ambiguity, much smaller measuring devices are sometimes placed on a print and re-photographed,鈥 Cawood said. 鈥淪pecimens gathered from the sites are also included. How big or how small depends on context鈥攃ompared to what? By confounding the viewer鈥檚 sense of scale, I hope to convey the intrigue I found in these seemingly ordinary scenes.鈥

The exhibition will be open through April 13 with a free public reception from 5-7 p.m. on Jan. 19. The exhibition is sponsored by Relyance Bank, and the reception is sponsored by MK Distributors.

In 鈥淕ary Cawood: Field Notes,鈥 the artist uses the camera as an effective note-taking device.

鈥淗is work in this series of 33 images emphasizes scale as an element of visual composition, exploring various ways the measuring scale can be integrated into the scene, sometimes titling the effect to be more ambiguous than factual,鈥 explained Kevin Haynie, the ARTx3 Campus鈥檚 curator of collections and exhibitions.

Cawood received his Master of Fine Arts degree from East Tennessee State University in 1976 and his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Auburn University in 1970.

His photographs have been widely exhibited throughout the United States, including in more than 60 solo shows and approximately 100 two-person and group shows. He has received visual artist fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mid-America Arts Alliance, and the Arkansas Arts Council. His work is included in numerous public collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, the Amon Carter Museum, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Art Gallery will open its 2024 season with two exhibitions featuring great examples of illustration from Arkansas-based artists as well as selected works from the Goodspeed Collection.

The first exhibition, 鈥淚llustration: Art That Works,鈥 will be on display in the Brad Cushman Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from Jan. 17 to Feb. 18. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Windgate Center.

鈥淚llustration, like graphic design, is looked upon as a 鈥榩ractical arts鈥 degree because, along with freelance work being common to both fields, illustrators can seek employment with newspapers and magazine publishers, can work in the gaming industry, in animation, as comic book and graphic novel illustrations, and as concept artist and production designers,鈥 said Nathan Larson, interim art gallery director and curator. 鈥淚llustrators work digitally and in more traditional media like painting and drawing, but also move between digital and traditional media. In this exhibition, Arkansas-based illustrators who work in a variety of media and in equally varied employment are brought together to represent what is possible in the field of Illustration.鈥

Artists whose work will be displayed in the exhibition include Robert Bean, Nikki Dawes, Sean Fitzgibbon, Dusty Higgins, Layet Johnson, Kirk Montgomery, Sally Nixon, Michele Noiset, David O’Brien, Kasten Searles, and Ricky Sikes.

In the second exhibition, a group of artwork from the personal collection of Henry Goodspeed, a retired financial advisor living in Little Rock, will be on display in the Ann Maners and Alex Pappas Gallery in the Windgate Center from Jan. 17 to March 3. A reception for the exhibition, 鈥淕oodspeed Collection: Stories,鈥 will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Windgate Center. The exhibition will include examples of photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking, and fiber works.

鈥淭his collection is an idiosyncratic reflection, a love for art, and an appreciation for art that spans media, style, and eras,鈥 Larson said. 鈥淓ach artwork has a story about how it came to be in Henry鈥檚 collection or has a story which is an integral aspect of the artwork itself.鈥

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Galleries in the Windgate Center are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. 鈥 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

For more information on these upcoming exhibitions, contact Larson at 501-916-5104 or nglarson@ualr.edu.

Slagle Selected for Inaugural Fellowship Program for Arkansas Artists /news/2023/07/07/slagle-catalyze/ Fri, 07 Jul 2023 12:38:51 +0000 https://ualrprd.wpengine.com/news/?p=85363 Dr. Derek Slagle, professor of public administration, has been named as one of the first 25 artists selected for a new fellowship program for Arkansas artists. Dr. Derek Slagle, professor of public administration, has been named as one of the first 25 artists selected for a new fellowship program for Arkansas artists.

As one of the inaugural members of , a new program of Mid-America Arts Alliance, Slagle will receive a $10,000 grant as well as professional development training designed to meet the needs of working artists. The program is designed to ignite the careers of artists who reside in eligible central Arkansas countries through funding, mentorship, and management.

鈥淚 am really thrilled to be a part of the Catalyze program,鈥 Slagle said. 鈥淚 often write academic grant proposals, and it is great to receive one for my photographic work. The program is unique because it will provide us with professional development, networking, and education opportunities as well as funding to pursue our artistic projects.鈥

Unlike many other grant programs, these practice-based grants are not specific to one art project, but rather to the artist鈥檚 overall creative practice. Funds can be used for any purpose that supports the continued development of their creative work. From studio rent, to childcare, to equipment, the awards aim to support artists in their processes, with an understanding that artists know what resources they need to let their creative work soar.

鈥淭raditionally artist grants are given for discrete projects to be completed in specific parameters,鈥 said Diane Scott, director of artist services at Mid-America Arts Alliance. 鈥淭hose are great, but often what artists need to really impact their careers is just what traditional businesses need: equipment, capacity-building, or research and development. This gift from the Windgate Foundation will allow these artists to strategically invest in what they need at this moment to take the next steps in their careers. It鈥檚 a real game-changer.鈥

Through the application process, artists were selected on the basis of their artistry, intended use and impact of the funding in their art practice, and the creation of a balanced peer cohort. Artists demonstrated a desire to participate in a multidisciplinary peer-based learning cohort, attended a professional development retreat June 24鈥25,, and will receive ongoing small group support and mentorship throughout the following year.

Slagle, a fine-art film photographer, is covering environmental conservation narratives primarily in the Southern and Midwestern areas of the United States. He will use the Catalyze grant to photograph partnerships with nonprofits and governmental entities for documentation of the science of conservation practices.

Slagle is going old school for this photographic project, using a 1940s Speed Graphic camera and Aero Ektar lens that utilizes large-format film. The specialty film must be ordered online, but Slagle said it gives his work a 鈥渢otally unique look.鈥 He develops, prints, and digitally scans all the photographs himself.

鈥淯sing a large-format film camera from the 1940s makes you slow down and be really intentional with every photo,鈥 Slagle said. 鈥淥ne of the photo sessions encompassed a whole day鈥檚 work, and I only took 12 pictures. You really have to think through every shot.鈥

So far, Slagle has photographed beekeepers, bird conservation groups, ranchers, and a feral hog eradication hunt, but he鈥檚 on the lookout for other opportunities to photograph sustainability and conservation efforts around the state.

Slagle鈥檚 photographs can be viewed at . Eventually, he would like to turn the photography project into a museum and/or gallery exhibition as well as publish his photographs in a book.
