The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has received a $50,000 grant from the Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor Foundation to support the University Career Services Internship (UCSI) Program. The funding will be used to provide paid internships for students, expanding access to hands-on, career-relevant learning experiences.

The University Career Services Internship Program connects students with experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic coursework and prepare them for professional success after graduation. While many employers offer paid internships, some high-impact opportunities, particularly within nonprofit, public service, and smaller organizations, are unpaid. This funding helps ensure students can participate in meaningful internships regardless of an organization鈥檚 ability to provide compensation.

鈥淭his support removes a real barrier for students,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for advancement at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭he Donaghey Foundation helped pilot the University Career Services Internship Program, and we are deeply grateful for that early investment. The Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor Foundation is now stepping forward to sustain and strengthen this work, making it possible for more students to gain meaningful, paid experiential learning opportunities that prepare them for life after graduation.鈥

The Taylor family has long been committed to education, workforce preparation, and civic leadership in Arkansas. Through this support, the Foundation is helping ensure students can participate in internships that build skills and professional experience without added financial strain, while employers gain access to talented, motivated students.

鈥淚nternships are often the bridge between the classroom and a student鈥檚 career,鈥 said Brittany Straw, director of Career Services at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭his support allows us to ensure students can take full advantage of valuable learning experiences without financial barriers.鈥

This gift supports the Centennial Campaign, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 $250 million capital campaign leading up to the University鈥檚 100-year anniversary in 2027. Learn more at ualr.edu/centennial.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has been honored with the 2025 Outstanding Education Partner Award from the (ASPSF), recognizing the university鈥檚 long-standing commitment to supporting single parents in their pursuit of higher education. The award was presented during A Day of Hope on Oct. 2 at the City Center in Little Rock.

The Outstanding Education Partner Award is presented annually to Arkansas colleges and universities that demonstrate exceptional collaboration with ASPSF to help single parents succeed academically and professionally. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was selected by students, donors, and volunteers from a pool of three finalists for its deep and ongoing partnership with the organization.

鈥淭he University of Arkansas at Little Rock stands out as a champion for single parent students in our state,鈥 said Jenn Morehead, CEO of ASPSF. 鈥淭he university鈥檚 understanding of the unique challenges faced by nontraditional students makes it an ideal partner for our mission. We鈥檝e seen firsthand how their collaborative approach helps our scholarship recipients not just survive but thrive academically. Institutions like 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock prove that when universities truly invest in their students鈥 success, entire families benefit for generations.鈥

A Legacy of Support for Single Parents

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has partnered with ASPSF since the 1990s, offering single parents a range of services and resources designed to remove barriers to education. As a metropolitan university, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock specializes in serving a diverse, nontraditional student body 鈥 a population that closely mirrors the students supported by ASPSF.

On campus, ASPSF recipients benefit from programs such as University Career Services and  TRIO Student Support Services and Educational Opportunity Centers, which complement ASPSF鈥檚 financial aid, workshops, and mentoring opportunities. The university has also supported ASPSF events as a sponsor and provided mentors for scholarship recipients.

The impact of that support is reflected in the stories of students like Carmen Bradford, a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock graduate and ASPSF alumna who credits the program with connecting her to professional mentors.

鈥淗e was the first one who showed me I could do this commercially and make a profit,鈥 Bradford said of a photographer she met through the ASPSF-糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock partnership. Today, Carmen owns a successful marketing and photography business and manages social media for Power 92 Jams and the Broadway Joe Morning Show.

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty have also embraced the unique needs of single parents, often allowing students to bring their children to class to avoid childcare costs. This is a great example of the university鈥檚 commitment to flexibility and student-centered support.

In 2025, 47 single parents received ASPSF scholarships to attend 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, following 59 recipients in 2024. These students represent part of a statewide effort by ASPSF to reduce poverty and create multigenerational change. Since its founding in 1990, ASPSF has awarded more than $50 million in scholarships and provided critical support services to single parents in 69 counties across Arkansas and in Bowie County, Texas.

鈥淲e are deeply honored to receive the Outstanding Education Partner Award from the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund,鈥 said Dr. Christina S. Drale, chancellor of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淥ur mission is not only to educate but also to empower students to change the trajectory of their lives and their families鈥 futures. Single parents bring extraordinary resilience, determination, and leadership to our campus, and we are proud to stand alongside ASPSF in helping them achieve their goals.鈥

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has partnered with , a North Little Rock-based nonprofit, to provide paid internships that allow students to put their classroom learning into practice while serving the Hispanic community in Central Arkansas.

Through the partnership, Spanish majors, minors, and certificate students at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock are placed at Seis Puentes, where they assist with English and Spanish language classes, food drives, youth programs, and health and legal workshops. Interns typically work 80 to 100 hours during the semester and receive a $1,600 stipend through University Career Services.

鈥淭his internship demonstrates that learning a language is more than a resume builder. It bridges gaps and connects people in meaningful ways,鈥 said Dr. Rex Wilkins, assistant professor of Spanish at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭his has become a model for what experiential learning should look like: students using their education to directly serve the community.鈥

Since launching in spring 2025, the program has grown from four interns to six this fall, providing a total of 14 student internships over three semesters. Interns have translated materials for city and law enforcement agencies, taught language classes, assisted patients in medical clinics, organized food drives, and helped run youth camps.

鈥淪eis Puentes is a small nonprofit with only one full-time employee,鈥 said Raul Fernandez, a member of the organization鈥檚 board of directors. 鈥淗aving interns really strengthens our work by bringing more hands on deck to do anything from administrative work to client services to managing our social media.鈥

Fernandez, a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock mass communication graduate, said his own internship experience at K糖心Vlog传媒R, a station of Little Rock Public Radio, gave him an appreciation for the value of experiential learning.

鈥淚 had an internship at K糖心Vlog传媒R while I was in school, and I learned a lot from it. It was one of the best experiences I ever had,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to be able to give that kind of real work experience back to these students. The interns definitely add to their resumes by doing professional and community work.鈥

Students describe the program as transformative. Lizbeth Renteria, a junior majoring in social work from Little Rock who interned over the summer, said the program strengthened her calling to help others.

鈥淚 worked at a youth summer camp and taught English as a second language,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t showed me how much of an impact consistent support can make. Translating for families reminded me how language can divide us but also connect us. This experience shaped me as a future community leader.鈥

Ragen Hodge, a senior biology major with a pre-med focus and a student-athlete, used her Spanish skills to translate for patients at a medical clinic in Oklahoma. For the first time, she accompanied Spanish-speaking patients through the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system.

By the end of the summer, she had guided dozens of patients through everything from filling out paperwork to talking with doctors about diagnoses to picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy. One patient, a woman suffering from lupus and kidney failure, especially touched her.

鈥淚 was nervous at first, but when I met her and her family, that nervousness disappeared,鈥 Hodge said. 鈥淚 stayed with her through the entire process, helped entertain her children while she waited, and made sure she understood her care. As they were leaving, her little girl turned around and blew me a kiss. I almost cried. That moment showed me the power of language and compassion in healthcare.鈥

Eric Brown, executive director of Seis Puentes, said the interns have brought new energy and expanded the nonprofit鈥檚 impact.

鈥淭hese students dedicate themselves to community service, and their contributions make a real difference in the lives of our neighbors,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his program bridges the university and the community in powerful ways. It鈥檚 relatively new, but it鈥檚 already making an impact. I鈥檓 excited to see it grow and to give students long-term resources that will help them in their professional and personal journeys.鈥

Michelle Marshall, career specialist with 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock University Career Services, emphasized the professional benefits students gain by completing internships.

鈥淏y funding internships like this, we鈥檙e able to provide access for students who might not otherwise have these opportunities,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey gain skills, confidence, and real-world experience that will help them in their future careers.鈥

The program also reflects 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 mission to connect higher education with the community it serves.

鈥淥ur interns are ambassadors for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and for Arkansas,鈥 Wilkins said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e showing how language and service can transform lives.鈥

For Jennifer Camacho, a junior double majoring in nursing and Spanish, interning at has been a life-changing experience.

鈥淚 would describe getting the opportunity to be an intern at Seis Puentes as one of the biggest highlights of my life,鈥 Camacho said. 鈥淲hen I was offered the internship last December, I recall feeling as though it was an answered prayer. I saw numerous ways I could help.鈥

Inspired by the experience, Camacho returned this fall for a second internship. She said the lessons she鈥檚 learned go far beyond translation or tutoring.

鈥淚 learned how to listen to people who couldn鈥檛 speak for themselves, how to communicate more effectively, and how to be more outgoing and confident in what I know,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he biggest thing that my mentor, Raul Fernandez, taught me was that being bilingual is like having a superpower, which I am very lucky to have.鈥

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has launched the Workforce Development Center, a new initiative designed to prepare students and professionals for career success while helping Arkansas businesses and industries meet their evolving workforce needs.

The University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees approved the new center during its Sept. 26 meeting. Housed within the Office of Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Ann Bain, the Workforce Development Center brings together four existing units 鈥 Concurrent Enrollment, Corporate and Community Education, Study Abroad, and University Career Services 鈥 under one strategic umbrella. The goal is to enhance collaboration, optimize resources, and align the university鈥檚 efforts with state and regional workforce priorities.

鈥淭he Workforce Development Center gives us the unique opportunity to support learners from age 14 through retirement,鈥 said Dr. Aaron Duvall, executive director of workforce development, who leads the new center. 鈥淥ur mission is to equip students and professionals with the skills and credentials that employers are seeking while helping companies across Arkansas upskill their workforce. We want to start by actually listening to business and industry leaders in our community and design programs and certifications that they value and need. Workforce development cannot happen in silos.鈥

The Workforce Development Center will serve as a central hub for aligning academic programs with non-credit courses and expanding opportunities for learners. Among its priorities are:

路   Expanding non-credit workforce pathways through Corporate and Community Education

路   Developing new certificates of proficiency that meet industry needs

路   Increasing internship opportunities through University Career Services

路 聽 Broadening career and technical education opportunities for high school students through Corporate and Community Education

路   Creating tools for workforce data collection and assessment

路   Evaluating prior learning assessment across the university

路   Expanding global workforce experiences, such as global internships, through Study Abroad

路   Supporting grant writing for workforce-related initiatives

Provost Bain said the creation of the center reflects 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 commitment to both student success and Arkansas鈥檚 economic vitality.

鈥淭his center is about more than connecting students with jobs,鈥 Bain said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about strengthening Arkansas鈥檚 economy by preparing graduates to meet workforce demands, supporting employers in developing their talent pipelines, and creating opportunities that benefit entire communities.鈥

The Workforce Development Center will build upon the success of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Corporate Partnerships Program, which offers employees of partner companies a 10 percent tuition scholarship, a $25-per-credit-hour book scholarship, and a waived application fee. This fall alone, the program has seen nearly 475 enrollments from 130 corporate partners. Since 2022, more than 1,500 students have participated, generating an estimated financial impact of nearly $5 million.

The Workforce Development Center will also house the newly formed Workforce Development Center Council, a group of faculty, staff, and administrators from across the university. The council will meet regularly to share insights on workforce trends in their fields, ensuring the center鈥檚 initiatives remain responsive to changing needs in the state and region.

By uniting these efforts under one umbrella, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is positioned to help students succeed in their careers while supporting businesses and industries with the talent and training they need to grow.

鈥淭his is a space for collaboration,鈥 Duvall said. 鈥淲hether you鈥檙e a student, alumni, or employer, we want to work together to make sure 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is providing the right pathways for Arkansas鈥檚 workforce now and in the future.鈥

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock invites community members, alumni, employers, and industry leaders to partner in shaping the future of workforce development in Arkansas. Those interested in sharing ideas, identifying workforce needs, or exploring partnership opportunities are encouraged to contact Duvall at aduvall@ualr.edu.

A native of Beebe, Arkansas, Davidson interned from late May through the end of July, serving as a history intern with a strong focus on public education and museum operations. The Old State House Museum is the oldest standing state capitol building west of the Mississippi River and chronicles Arkansas history since it became a state in 1836. The experience solidified his career aspirations and gave him valuable skills he鈥檒l carry into law school.

鈥淚 had a passion for history growing up, so I really liked working with students and seeing them get excited about history,鈥 Davidson said. 鈥淚t helped me become more passionate about education and gave me insight into how I might incorporate that into my future career.鈥

His daily responsibilities included greeting guests at the front desk, giving tours of the museum, helping with educational programming, and assisting with events like Second Friday Art Night. One of his favorite aspects was getting to handle artifacts from the early 1800s.

鈥淲orking with historical artifacts from the 19th century gave me a sense of purpose and reminded me why preserving history matters,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he museum staff was very informative and passionate about their work, which made the experience even better.鈥

Students and employees from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 (EAC) teamed up with Career Services to develop a Snapchat filter that captures the excitement of career fairs on campus.

The project began in August 2024 when Brittany Straw, director of University Career Services, toured the EAC lab to explore potential collaborations. Inspired by the EAC鈥檚 innovative projects, she proposed the idea of a custom Snapchat filter that would engage students and highlight the excitement of networking with industry professionals.

鈥淚 wanted the campus to have a career fair filter to show students that Career Services aren’t always formal and boring,鈥 Straw said. 鈥淣etworking can be fun, informative, and fruitful. Many students are anxious about career fairs. Using this filter is a great way to engage them.鈥

Development of the filter officially began in February 2025, with undergraduate student James McMath leading the programming, assisted by Colin McNerny.

Graduate student Carlos Ochoa, undergraduate student Trelan Washington, and lead artist Jason Zak worked alongside Charla Tozer, a senior graphic design major, to design the graphics and user interface elements.

“I think this project is a great opportunity for me to contribute to the university,鈥 Tozer said. 鈥淔or my part in the project, I updated the original Trojan Man design by giving him a suit to align with the Career Fair theme, which was then used as an art element in the filter. I鈥檓 excited for people to use the Snapchat filter and see my take on the design!”

The team was guided by key faculty and staff, including Dr. Jan Springer, EAC director, Thomas Coffin, senior visualization manager, and Dusty Higgins, an assistant professor in digital arts and illustration.

The Career Fair Snapchat filter is now live and accessible on the . Users can also find it by searching “EAC 糖心Vlog传媒LR” on Snapchat, where it joins a collection of more than 25 filters created by the EAC.

The filter offers a fun and interactive way for students to celebrate career fairs while sharing their experiences on social media. The EAC and Career Services hope the project will not only enhance student participation but also demonstrate the growing role of technology in career development and university engagement.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has received two grants totaling $75,000 from the Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor Foundation to support student success initiatives.

The foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the University Career Services Internship (UCSI) Program and a $50,000 grant to the Richard B. Dixon Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Department of History.

The Taylor Foundation, established by the late Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor, has a long-standing tradition of supporting education, business, and professional development. Their dedication to fostering opportunities for Arkansas students remains a cornerstone of the foundation鈥檚 mission.

The Taylors believed strongly in supporting students who aspire to build careers in the fields they valued. The Foundation is pleased to continue this tradition by investing in programs that provide students with practical experience and professional growth.

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock recognizes the transformative impact of internships on students鈥 academic and professional development. The UCSI Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock fills a critical gap by providing funding for student internships with employers who are not always able to provide paid internship opportunities. The Taylor Foundation鈥檚 grant will enhance the program鈥檚 ability to support students by funding more internship stipends, which provides students with hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and skill development essential for post-graduation success.

鈥淭he Taylor Foundation鈥檚 continued support of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock demonstrates their commitment to helping students gain real-world experience through internships, a critical component of career readiness,鈥 said Brittany Straw, director of University Career Services at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭his grant will enable us to expand internship opportunities for students and better prepare them for success in their chosen fields.鈥

In addition to supporting internships, the foundation’s $50,000 grant to the Richard B. Dixon Endowed Scholarship Fund will benefit history students at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. Dixon, a longtime family friend of the Taylors, was a passionate advocate for preserving Little Rock鈥檚 history and played a significant role in chronicling the city’s past.

鈥淭his generous gift from the Taylor Foundation will have a lasting impact on our students,鈥 said Dr. Barclay Key, chair of the Department of History at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淪cholarships like the Richard B. Dixon Endowed Scholarship provide essential support to history students, allowing them to focus on their studies and pursue their passion for understanding the past.鈥

Through the continued generosity of the Taylor Foundation, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock remains dedicated to providing students with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in the workforce and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

An ongoing partnership with the Pulaski Conservation District gave seven 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students the opportunity to participate in 15-week paid internships this summer.

These students interned at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Campus Garden, Urban Patchwork, and Oak Forest Community Garden.

鈥淚 am currently on my second contract with Pulaski Conservation District and work at the Urban Patchwork Garden where I get to work with chickens,鈥 said Megan Ruth Wilkins, a graduate student studying conflict management. 鈥淎long with nearly two dozen adult hens, there are plenty of feathers in my day鈥 help with the transport of the chickens to new homes, other community gardens, as well as our neighbors’ backyards.鈥

In 2023, the Pulaski Conservation District offered grant funding to support existing internship program and to support community workshops in fall 2023 hosted by 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Extended Education.

This summer, the seven students were placed at internship sites using Handshake, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 online recruiting platform.

鈥淚n the past, I鈥檝e used apps and websites like Indeed or even Facebook to find jobs,鈥 said Audra Coffman, a biology major and intern at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Campus Garden. 鈥淭hey are riddled with scams, vague descriptions, and just all around difficult user interfaces. Handshake notified me whenever the garden application was live due to my preferences. I love the settings you鈥檙e able to apply and the reputable employers you find.鈥

The partnership affords students the opportunity to receive hands-on learning in fields of their interest while also being compensated for their work.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been my favorite job to date, and even though it鈥檚 hard work at times, I get to do so many cool things and learn a lot along the way,鈥 Coffman said. 鈥淚 even get to express my creative side with painting signs and designing logos.鈥

Every student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has access to Handshake and can . With Handshake, students can schedule interviews, sign up for career fairs, and receive personalized job recommendations.

鈥淯niversity Career Services uses Handshake to provide safe and equitable job opportunities for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students,鈥 said University Career Services Director Brittany Straw. 鈥淲e approved over 45,071 jobs for 13,274 employers last year and are pleased to use Handshake as a resource for the Pulaski Conservation District.鈥
