The University of Arkansas at Little Rock held a moving Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and community members to honor the courage and sacrifice of U.S. veterans.

Master Sergeant Paul Hill, a 24-year Air Force veteran and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alumnus, delivered an impactful keynote speech, emphasizing the profound role of service in shaping lives and communities. In his address, Hill reflected on his journey from a young idealist in Southern California to a dedicated Air Force veteran.

鈥淲hen I was a student鈥檚 age, young and full of youthful idealism, I made a decision that would change the course of my life, to join the United States Air Force,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 an easy choice. I had to leave behind friends, family, and the familiar surroundings of a fun life in Southern California in the 70s.鈥

Hill explained that the decision to serve in the military wasn鈥檛 part of a planned path but rather a calling he felt in an unexpected moment.

鈥淚 decided to turn my life over to the U.S. military almost as a fluke at a bus stop,鈥 Hill said. 鈥淚t changed my life.鈥

The theme of sacrifice ran strongly through Hill鈥檚 message as he reflected on the daily challenges and responsibilities of military life.

鈥淚n the military, sacrifice isn鈥檛 just a slogan or something you wear on your shirt. It鈥檚 a daily occurrence,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f you can鈥檛 put others before yourself in the military, you won鈥檛 make it. They face every hardship and uncertainty all in the name of duty and honor and in the name of you. We do this for people.鈥

Hill鈥檚 reflections on service didn鈥檛 stop at the military. He encouraged the audience to find ways to contribute to their communities, whether through volunteering, mentoring, or simply helping those in need.

鈥淥ne of the most powerful ways to make a difference in this world is through public service,鈥 he shared, recounting a touching memory of his volunteer work in a nursing home when a simple, compassionate gesture had a profound impact on a resident.

As the event came to a close, Hill left the audience with a powerful call to action: 鈥淟et鈥檚 honor the sacrifice of our veterans by living our lives with purpose and meaning. Let鈥檚 strive to be the best version of ourselves and make a positive impact on the world.鈥

The event also featured the Arkansas National Guard presenting the colors and performing the U.S. National Anthem.

After the ceremony, military students and veterans were invited to have lunch in the Trojan Caf茅 to honor the contributions of the university鈥檚 military heroes.

In honor of Veterans Day, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is featuring outstanding students. Allow us to introduce Sarah Brackenbury, a student veteran and a prospective nurse who is committed to continuing her family’s esteemed legacy in both the military and nursing.

Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Sarah Brackenbury, and I am a first-year nursing student. I hail from Pekin, Indiana, and my favorite pastime is riding motorcycles with my husband. I have a one-year-old son named Benjamin, and my husband is currently serving in the active-duty Air Force. I just finished in the Air Force as a staff sergeant; in the Army, I was a sergeant.

What influenced your decision to join the military?

I chose to join the military because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my family members who had served their country before me.

What motivated you to choose your major?

I chose nursing as my major because I believed it would offer opportunities for personal and professional growth.

What led you to choose 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock?

I selected 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock because it provides the flexibility to work while pursuing my education.

When is your expected graduation date, and what are your post-graduation plans?

I anticipate graduating in May 2025. After graduation, I hope to secure a position at one of the local hospitals, although I am still uncertain about the specific nursing specialty I wish to pursue.

What unique opportunities has 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provided that you might not have found elsewhere?

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has afforded me the freedom to create my own schedule, a feature not always available at other institutions, especially for nursing students.

What advice would you offer to fellow students?

If I were to provide advice to other students, particularly young individuals transitioning from high school, I would emphasize the importance of determining their career goals before embarking on a four-year college journey. It took me until I was 25 years old to discover my true calling.

Veterans Day is approaching. Why do you believe it is crucial to commemorate Veterans Day?

Veterans Day holds personal significance for me, as it serves as an occasion to honor the living veterans who were willing to make tremendous sacrifices for the well-being of strangers right here at home.
