The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture (CAHC) and the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) Butler Center for Arkansas Studies are teaming up to host Home Movie Day 2025 on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1-4 p.m. at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Downtown.

Attendees are invited to bring their home movies to share and explore, while also enjoying a curated selection of home movies from the CAHC and Butler Center collections. The event is free and open to the public, and guests can enjoy complimentary popcorn and drinks while completing a Home Movie Day bingo card for a chance to win prizes.

Guests can look forward to clips that range from early footage of the Little Rock Zoo and family trips to Devil鈥檚 Den, to childhood home movies of Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller and ordinary moments for everyday Arkansans like parades, birthday parties,聽gardening, and camping. The collection spans from the 1910s through the 1990s, offering a rare window into Arkansas history through the eyes of everyday people.

鈥淗ome movies tell us so much about the way the world was at particular points in time from the perspective of ordinary people,鈥 said Amanda McQueen, archivist and student coordinator at CAHC. 鈥淔or a long time, history was told only through the lives of great men and women. Home movies give us insight into the everyday lives of ordinary citizens and help create a bigger, more complete picture of the past.鈥

Started by the nonprofit Center for Home Movies, Home Movie Day celebrates home movies and amateur films. McQueen, who holds a master鈥檚 degree in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation from New York University, said the event also raises awareness about the need to preserve personal media in the face of rapidly changing technology.

鈥淭hat clip you shot today on your iPhone is a home movie,鈥 McQueen said. 鈥淭he question is: What will happen to that file in 100 years if you don鈥檛 preserve it? People in the future won鈥檛 be able to see what life was like today.鈥

At the event, trained archivists will be on hand to help attendees view personal media in formats such as 8mm and 16mm films, Betacam tapes, VHS tapes, and MiniDVD tapes. While digitization services will not be available on-site, guests will receive information about preservation and digitization resources, including the CALS DIY Memory Lab at the Roberts Library in downtown Little Rock. The is a free, self-service space where the public can digitize photographs, VHS and Beta tapes, audio cassettes, and other media.

McQueen hopes the event will inspire Arkansans to dig out their old tapes and reels.

鈥淚f you have these films tucked away in your attic or basement, now is the time to do something to preserve them,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hese movies are important records of our cultural and community heritage, and everyone鈥檚 story matters.鈥

Dr. John Kirk, George W. Donaghey Distinguished Professor of History at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, has received the 2024 Booker Worthen Literary Prize from the Central Arkansas Library System for his 2022 biography, 鈥.鈥

鈥淭he Worthen Prize is a venerable Arkansas tradition, and I join a distinguished list of recipients that includes former governor Sid McMath; Morris Arnold, a senior judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals; Mara Leveritt, an investigative journalist; and Kevin Brockmeier, a novelist and short story writer, among many others,鈥 Kirk said. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 History Department has also provided past Worthen Prize winners in former Department Chair S. Charles Bolton and former faculty member Elizabeth Jacoway.鈥

The Booker Worthen Literary Prize is awarded each year to the best work, fiction or nonfiction, by an author living in Arkansas and has a three-year period of eligibility. The award comes with a $2,000 prize, which Kirk said he will use to help pay for his daughter鈥檚 college tuition.

Kirk鈥檚 biography represents the culmination of 12 years of research. It investigates why Rockefeller, scion of one of the most powerful families in American history, left New York to move to an Arkansas mountaintop in the 1950s. The book covers Rockefeller鈥檚 childhood and education, his rise in the oil industry, his military service during World War II, and his family. Kirk tied Rockefeller鈥檚 New York life to his later work in his adopted state, where his legacy continues to be felt more than half a century after his governorship.

鈥淭he book shines an important light on the former Arkansas governor before he came to the state and the events that shaped him,鈥 Kirk said. 鈥淚t examines his family background, childhood, and education; his rise in the oil industry from roustabout to junior executive; his military service in the Pacific during World War II, including his involvement in the battles of Guam, Leyte, and Okinawa; his postwar work in race relations, health, education, and philanthropy; his marriage to and divorce from Barbara 鈥淏obo鈥 Sears; and the birth of his only child, future Arkansas lieutenant governor Win Paul Rockefeller.鈥

The Booker Worthen Literary Prize was established in 1999 in the memory of William Booker Worthen, who was a member of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) Board of Trustees for 22 years, as well as part of the Worthen Bank empire. The award is funded in part by interest from an endowment for the award donated by the Worthen family.

鈥淚 am very grateful to the Rockefeller Archive Center in Sleepy Hollow, New York, for naming me its inaugural Scholar-in-Residence and for providing me with further research funding and support to make the book possible,鈥 Kirk said. 鈥淚 am also grateful to the Central Arkansas Library System鈥檚 Butler Center for Arkansas Studies for selecting the book as the 2024 Worthen Prize winner, and to the Arkansas Historical Association for selecting the book as the 2024 J. G. Ragsdale Book Award winner.鈥
