The Sequoyah National Research Center (SNRC) seeks two tribally-affiliated students to work a minimum of 25 hours per week in the Center doing basic archival and research work under the direction of Center staff.

The SNRC at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock houses the papers and special collections of tribal individuals and organizations and holds the world’s largest archival collection of Native American newspapers and periodicals.

The goal of the American Indian/Alaska Native Student Internship Program is to provide students an experiential learning environment in which to acquire an understanding of the value of archives and the research potential of the collections of the Center and to engage in academic research and practical archival activities related to tribal culture, society, and issues. Interns are expected to demonstrate the value of their experience by either a summary report of work, finding aids for collections, or reports of research or other written work that may be shared with their home institutions.

To qualify for an internship, students must

  • Be affiliated with a federally-recognized tribe,
  • Have completed at least 60 college hours, and
  • Be in good standing at their home institutions of higher learning.

To apply, students must send

  • An unofficial copy of the student’s academic transcript,
  • A resume/CV,
  • A recommendation letter from the head of the student’s major department or from another relevant academic official, and
  • An application that includes a personal statement of at least 250 words expressing why the intern experience would be beneficial to the student’s academic or career goals.

The Center provides on-campus housing and $2,500 to defray other living expenses. Students interested in applying for internships for June 5 through July 28, 2023, should complete the online application (/sequoyah/summerinternship/). Inquiries may be sent to Dr. Daniel F. Littlefield or Erin Fehr at sequoyah@ualr.edu. Applications are due by March 31, 2023. The Center will select two applicants and notify students of their decision by April 7.

Tori Watson has been named the Spring 2018 recipient for the James W. Parins Intern Scholarship. Watson is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts in Professional and Technical Writing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, where she graduated with High Honors. After teaching in a junior high school and realizing it was under-supported, she returned to school with the intent to pursue a career in technical writing.

Watson states, 鈥淭oo much Native culture has been lost throughout the years, and if we can work together to preserve and counter that loss, then we have an obligation to do so. Native American traditions have always been a part of my life, and I am very glad that I will be continuing my life long journey of learning more about my culture and history.鈥 She is currently researching the Indian Removal of the Choctaws from the Southeast to Indian Territory.

The Parins scholarship was established in the Spring 2017 semester as a way to honor the legacy of SNRC鈥檚 co-founder Dr. James W. Parins. The scholarship is awarded to a student, who demonstrates a knowledge of Native American cultures and an is in good standing with the university.

As always, if you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund in memory of Dr. Parins, we invite you to make a tax deductible gift through the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Foundation. Gifts may be made via check to 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock Foundation鈥 with 鈥淧arins Scholarship Fund鈥 in the memo line or online through our website (ualr.edu/sequoyah) under the 鈥淪upport SNRC鈥 link.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Little Rock, AR鈥擳he Sequoyah National Research Center (SNRC) received $3,500 from the Shakopee Mdewakaton Sioux Community to fund a student in the Center鈥檚 Native American Student Summer Internship Program. The Center chose Desmond Hassing to receive the award.

SNRC director Dr. Daniel Littlefield states, 鈥淭he Center has made working with students a priority since we began in 1983 and has been fortunate to have some outstanding students come through the Center in that time. Desmond is a hard-working student, who is eager to learn and apply that knowledge to future projects.鈥

Hassing is a graduate student at San Diego State University in the Department of Theatre working towards a Master of Arts and a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He will work in the Center this summer doing archival processing, working to prepare collections to be used by scholars and make them searchable in the Center鈥檚 online catalog.

“I am honored to receive the Shakopee Mdewakaton Sioux Community Internship,鈥 says Hassing. 鈥淭he education on archive methodology I am receiving at the Sequoyah National Research Center will help me distill and archive my own research in a manner that will allow it to be accessed by both scholars and interested parties throughout Indian Country. It is my hope that the tools I learn at Sequoyah will lead to a broad discussion both throughout my own tribal community and Indian Country at large about how Indigenous people have traditionally, and continue to be, depicted within the medium of comic books. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn these skills and hope that it will lead to a greater understanding among mainstream audiences that many of the representations presented by the media of Indigenous people are simplistic, inaccurate, and harmful.”

Little Rock, AR 鈥 The Sequoyah National Research Center (SNRC) announced a $3,500 donation received from the Shakopee Medwakanton Sioux Community today. The donation will be used to support the Center鈥檚 Native American Student Summer Internship Program.

SNRC director Dr. Daniel Littlefield says, 鈥淲e are so pleased that the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community values the work we do for contemporary Native American communities and wants to invest in the Center鈥檚 work and the education of Native American students. We hope to one day host a Shakopee student as a summer intern.鈥

Since the internship program began in 2010, SNRC has hosted 21 Native American undergraduate and graduate students for summer internships. The students have come from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus and universities across the United States, including the University of Oklahoma, Haskell Indian Nations University, and San Diego State University.

Each summer students spend two months working in the Center on a dedicated project. Past projects completed have included the processing and creation of a finding aid for the Mark Trahant Papers, indexing of videos from the Center鈥檚 symposium, and cataloguing of maps and posters. The students gain invaluable work experience that will benefit them as they continue their education and look for jobs after graduation.
