Our volunteers make a huge impact in the Campus Garden. We would not be the growing and thriving garden today without our many wonderful volunteers over the past 10 years. We recognize our outstanding volunteers beginning with our first Volunteer of the Year in 2022!

Rachel Smith- Masters in Counselor Education, Class of 2022

Congratulations to Rachel Smith! Her outstanding volunteer service, consistency in volunteering, and willingness to show up and help out with any needs made her the obvious choice as volunteer of the year! Her effervescent personality and enduring smile are truly missed in the garden, yet we’re very happy to see her move on to pursue a wonderful career!

Rachel shared some thoughts about her time with us in the garden:

“It is an honor to be the first-ever Campus Garden volunteer of the year! I am so grateful for the time I have spent in the ÌÇÐÄVlog´«Ã½ Little Rock Campus Garden. I not only learned a lot about plants and gardening, but I learned about myself. Getting out in the fresh air and being able to care for something and watch it grow is something I wish everyone would experience. I met new people and made friends. I ate fresh spinach that I helped grow! Picking fresh fruits and vegetables that I helped care for is such a rewarding feeling. Helping in the garden is something that instantly made me feel better, no matter what I was going through. I will never forget my experiences in the garden and I am so grateful to everyone, especially Nancy and Dr. Grace, for making the garden such an awesome place for people to volunteer! Also- I had an awesome time helping Mr. Stuckey with the bees!”

We’re so proud of Rachel and know she will thrive in her new, big adventure in education!

Many times aphids are just a nuisance and do no damage to a plant but a large infestation can injure  your plants. This season they were fond of inhabiting pepper plants so what do you do about aphids?

Here are a few options:

  • Spray the plants with soapy water every few days, especially on the underside of the leaves.  One tablespoon of dish soap or castile soap per gallon of water is enough.
  • Spray with dish soap plus cayenne pepper and/or neem oil.  Neem oil sprays are available at most garden centers.
  • Knock them off by hand or a hose and remove the older leaves.
  • Put beneficial insects like ladybugs or green lacewings on the plants.
  • Grow companion plants like marigolds, garlic, and catnip with the pepper plants.

There’s lots of information online about aphid control.  Here’s a good article that specifically talks about peppers.

Our tomatoes are indeterminate, meaning they will produce fruit over an extended period of time.  The plants will become quite large so they should be trellised or staked for best results.  Space plants at least three feet apart when planting.

Tomatoes will grow roots from the stems so plant deeply to encourage rooting.  This will also help young plants from toppling over.

Wait until night time temperatures are above 50 degrees F before transplanting outdoors.

Grow plants in medium rich soil.  Add compost if possible.  Do not over fertilize, especially with nitrogen as this will promote leaf and stem growth at the expense of fruit growth.  Water seedlings with a high-phosphate fertilizer solution at planting to help boost early yields.  Do not over water.

Remove suckers from young plants so that growth is concentrated on the main stem.  Keep the leaves from touching the ground, as this will encourage soil borne diseases.

Growing information for peppers

Peppers are easy to grow and require little maintenance.  Transplant plants into well-drained, fertile soils.  Add compost if possible.

Wait until night time temperatures are above 50 degrees F before transplanting outdoors. Ideal seedlings have buds, but no open flowers. Space plants at least two feet apart.  Plants should be staked to prevent toppling over.  Water transplants using a high phosphorus fertilizer.  Use row cover or mulch to help prevent weeds.  Do not over water.
