Health Services partnered with the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Department of Nursing to offer flu vaccines to students and employees. Nursing faculty supervised nursing students as they took advantage of this hands-on opportunity. Without the support of these faculty members and their students, Health Services could not offer such a robust flu campaign.

Vaccines also were administered at the Bowen School of Law and, for the first time, at the Benton Campus.

Health Services works in partnership with the offices of International Services and IELP to provide TB screenings for all new international students.

• 179 students from 33 countries were screened.
• 28% of the students screened had a ‘positive’ result (a positive result indicates that the individual has been infected with TB bacteria. It does mean they have active disease).
• There were no active cases of TB.

For the second year in a row, the Arkansas Department of Health provided Health Services with FREE tuberculosis medications for international students who tested positive on their TB screening. Chanell Smith, RN manages this program and oversees medication compliance.   There were six international students who chose to participate in the program this year and all six finished the 12-week regimen. These student’s received an average of $600+ in free medications .

Those who completed the regimen reduced, by 90%, their chances of ever
getting active TB!

The Office of the Chancellor, Health Services, Communications, International Services, and the Environmental Health & Safety Committee joined together to ensure that the 糖心Vlog传媒LR campus community was kept up-to-date on the Ebola outbreak. The Health Services website was updated to include Ebola information, guidelines, and recommendations. Regular communication was sent through campus email.

Marie Sandusky, Director, and Charlotte Beck, Assistant Director, participated in a telephone conference with the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) regarding guidelines for individuals returning from affected countries.

Three students traveling from countries with wide-spread Ebola transmission were monitored by Health Services staff for 21 days as per recommendations by the CDC and ADH.

Health Services, Disability Resource Center, the Alliance, and faculty members from 糖心Vlog传媒LR and 糖心Vlog传媒MS joined forces to establish the Safe Zone committee.  The mission of Safe Zone is to improve the overall campus climate and to educate students, staff, and faculty about issues related to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) individuals.

A training program was developed for those wanting to become Safe Zone Allies. Persons displaying the Safe Zone sticker have completed the training and made a commitment to be supportive of and knowledgeable about LGBT identities and issues.

A request was submitted to the Chancellor asking that the Safe Zone committee be recognized as an official 糖心Vlog传媒LR committee. The request was approved allowing committee members to work on Safe Zone during regular business hours.

Health Services continues to collaborate with the 糖心Vlog传媒 System Office and OnLife Health by offering biometric screenings for 糖心Vlog传媒LR employees with UMR health insurance. The screening involves measuring height, weight, waist circumference, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels. Employees are educated about normal and abnormal values and the importance of maintaining good overall health. They also are encouraged to take advantage of the preventative health care benefits offered through UMR.

Those employees identified as having health problems (such as hypertension) were called back for an appointment to see a health provider in Health Services.

During the spring semester, Health Services and Health Promotions staff provided blood pressure checks and distributed brochures/educational materials on stress relieving techniques to 40+ law students at the Stress-Less Fest.
