Latara Williams, a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Applied Communication graduate student, received the 2026 Karen Russ Memorial Award for Excellence in Research for her study, Resilient Voices: Exploring African American Patient Experiences with Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs). Dr. Gerald Driskill served as her faculty mentor. Williams presented her research at the 2026 Research Expo which was held on Friday, April 17.

Williams鈥 research project explored African American patients鈥 experiences with Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), guided by communication theory to examine how stigma, trust, and culturally responsive care shape counseling experiences and resilience.

The Karen Russ Memorial Award of $500 is awarded each spring to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock student who best utilizes, applies, and visualizes government data in his/her research. In her Expo project, Williams used U.S. government behavioral health data to contextualize national disparities that shape help-seeking and stigma. Specifically, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (OMH) were used to document the mental health treatment gap for Black/African American adults. She also drew on SAMHSA NSDUH reports to situate patterns related to mental illness, treatment utilization, and disparities by race/ethnicity.

These federal resources established the analytical framework and justification for her qualitative narrative study. To enhance her presentation, Williams incorporated a visual data snapshot on her Research Expo poster, utilizing a QR code to offer attendees immediate access to her complete APA references and the primary government documents.

The Ottenheimer Library faculty and staff congratulate Ms. Williams on winning this award.

Latara Williams, who received the 2026 Karen Russ Award, stands with Emily Bowie.

High publishing costs shouldn’t stand between research and the world. To bridge this gap, the Ottenheimer Library is proud to announce a听“Read and Publish” agreement with Wiley, what was effective as of January 1, 2026.

Why This Matters

Typically, publishing听Open Access (OA)听requires expensive Article Processing Charges (APCs). Under this new deal, those fees are听fully covered听for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock researchers. By removing financial barriers, the library ensures that work gains higher visibility, more citations, and a global reach鈥攁ll at zero cost.

Key Benefits for Faculty

  • 1,280+ Journals:听APCs are waived for Wiley鈥檚 hybrid journals across nearly every discipline.
  • Seamless Workflow:听A step-by-step Wiley Journal is available to help navigate funding requests during submission.
  • Broad Impact:听This joins a growing list of over 6,200 journals covered by collective agreements.

Get Started

Ready to publish? Check eligibility and browse the full list of the 6200 journals covered at Ottenheimer Library on the听Read and Publish Agreementspage.

Note:听If a preferred journal isn’t covered by this agreement, faculty may still be eligible for assistance through the听Open Access Publishing Support Fund.

Ignite the Open Movement in 5 Minutes

If you鈥檝e already integrated Open Educational Resources (OER) into your curriculum or navigated the complexities of open licensing, you know the impact these tools have on student success. Your practical experience is an invaluable asset to our campus. We are officially inviting you to share your insights and project successes by presenting a Lightning Talk to our community. This event is a collaboration between eLearning and Ottenheimer Library.

What is Open Education Week?

is a global celebration of the movement to make learning more accessible and affordable. At its core, Open Education involves using resources that are free to access and carry “open” licenses, allowing others to legally reuse, adapt, and share them. It is a dedicated week for creators, librarians, and student champions to showcase how these materials鈥攆rom textbooks to full-degree pathways鈥攁re evolving the way we teach and learn today.

Why Present to Our Campus?

Sharing your work with colleagues and students right here at home is a powerful way to influence our local academic culture and spark institutional change.

  • Earn Professional Credit: All presenters will receive 10 ATLE points in recognition of their contribution to campus professional development.
  • Foster Campus Collaboration: Connect with fellow faculty and staff facing similar challenges, opening the door for cross-departmental projects.
  • Demonstrate Impact: Show the campus community how open practices are directly improving engagement and affordability in your courses.
  • Strengthen Your Portfolio: These presentations are a fantastic way to document your service for internal reviews and tenure files.

Fast-Paced & Focused: The Lightning Talk

We are exclusively seeking Lightning Talks for this event. This format is perfect for delivering a punchy, concentrated burst of information without the stress of a long-form lecture:

  • Date & Time: Thursday, March 12, from 10:30鈥11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Room 100A and online.
  • Time Limit: 5 minutes (solo or collaborative).
  • Visuals: Up to 20 slides.
  • The Goal: Focus on one clear takeaway鈥攚hether it鈥檚 a specific resource, a creative teaching strategy, or a quick “lesson learned” that your peers can use immediately.

These talks will serve as the culmination of our campus OE Week celebrations, providing a high-energy finale to our week of learning.

Topic Ideas

Interested in presenting but need some topic ideas? Check out the OE Week handbook (specifically the 鈥淲hat to talk about and how鈥 tab) for some inspiration.
