History professor to discuss 1960s desegregation in Little Rock schools]]> The lecture, Some Degree of Separation: Education in Little Rock in the 1960s,‘” will be held Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Ottenheimer Auditorium in the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St. in downtown Little Rock. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m., and the talk is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. The lecture involves an examination of the experiences of those directly involved in the situation, including a student, a civil rights leader, and a school board member. 鈥淎fter federal courts ordered the desegregation of Little Rock鈥檚 schools, a new generation of white leaders arose who accepted a small degree of desegregation if it saved the public schools and prevented more extreme policies,鈥 Ross said. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the University History Institute’s Evenings with History Series. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 27, in the Arkansas Capitol Building. Two student shuttles will be available to take participants to the event and back. The vans will begin loading at 9 a.m. in the circle loop of East Hall and at the Village. Former governor Winthrop Rockefeller and civil rights pioneer Ozelle Sutton will be recognized, as will former director of the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education, William Walker, who will be in attendance. Distinguished Professor of History Dr. John Kirk, director of 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Institute on Race and Ethnicity, will serve as the 聽keynote speaker. Kirk鈥檚 research focuses on the history of the civil rights movement in the United States, the South, and Arkansas, as well as post-New Deal history.   • 听听听听听Black Inventors/Student Invention Program: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, in Ledbetter A, B, C. This program highlights important contributions made by African American inventors. It is also a creative opportunity for 糖心Vlog传媒LR students to showcase their talents by competing in a student invention competition. Winning inventions will receive monetary awards.
