Students place in biomedical conference

Several ��Vlog��ýLR students received awards for their original research at the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Conference Nov. 7-14 in Fayetteville.

Eleven students from the University Science Scholars Program (USSP) and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) participated in the conference, presenting their research in the form of oral presentations or posters and competing with scholars from other universities across Arkansas. Mary-Kate Williams, a senior biology major from North Little Rock, won first place in biology for her oral presentation, “Spore Persistence in the Environment Drives Infection Dynamics of a Butterfly Pathogen.” She conducted her research during a National Science Foundation internship at the University of Georgia. “I was instantly attracted to how such a small parasite could affect their population size and distribution,” she said. “I find this cycle fascinating and would like to continue research on environmental transmission of diseases on different organisms.”

Lafayette DeRamus

Senior physics major Lafayette DeRamus III received second place in physics for his poster, “Determining Optical Characteristics for CIGS/CdS Solar Cells Through AFORS-HET Simulation Program.” He worked with Dr. Hye-won Seo in the ��Vlog��ýLR Department of Physics for his research. “The INBRE conference was a great opportunity to network with scientists across Arkansas and confer about current research topics of interest. I love my research because of its relationship with nanotechnology, setting up a vision for the future,” he said. Zachary Hicks won an honorable mention in chemistry for his poster, “Novel Carbon-Based Supercapacitor,” and Sam Shry won an honorable mention in biology for his poster, “Investigating Genetic Basis of Migratory Timing Using Circadian Clock Genes in Spring Chinook Salmon.” Hicks was mentored by Dr. Tito Viswanathan in the ��Vlog��ýLR Department of Chemistry, and Shry had a NSF internship at Oregon State University. Other ��Vlog��ýLR students participating in the conference included Autumn Brown, Osvaldo Cassio, Jeffrey Jones, Jeffrey Kerst, Taylor McClanahan, Divya Patel, and Xeniya Rudolf.

International Celebration Week honors diversity Nov. 17-20

International Celebration Week honors diversity of cultures, ideas, music, food, and traditions around the world and on campus and celebrates the benefits of international education and global exchange. The initiative promotes programs that prepare students for the global setting and attracts future leaders from abroad to study and learn in the U.S. ��Vlog��ýLR will host the following events Nov. 17-20 in honor of International Celebration Week.

Students apply for US passports Nov. 19

The Office of Study Abroad will host a ��Vlog��ýLR Passport Day Wednesday, Nov. 19, during the 2014 International Celebration Week, to give students an opportunity to apply for their U.S. passports. Students who RSVP by Friday, Nov. 19, may enter a drawing to receive a Passport Mini Grant. Five students will be selected at random to receive $135 to cover the passport application fees. Winning students will be notified by Monday, Nov. 17. The event is open to the public. For more information, visit ualr.edu/studyabroad/passport Application Materials

Original or certified U.S. birth certificate, original naturalization certificate or previous U.S. passport
State or federal identification – such as a driver’s license. If the license is from out-of-state, a second photo identification or social security card is needed.
Photo copy of identification and second identification, if necessary. Copies must be clear copies of both the front and back
Payment – only personal checks or money orders of the exact amounts of $110, for application fee to U.S. Department of State and $25 for processing fee to U.S. Post Office will be accepted
Passport photo – a passport photo may be brought or a photo may be taken at the time of application for $15. For those who want photo taken, please bring payments of $110 and $40.
For those 16 or 17 years old, at least one parent will need to be present with a state or federal identification.

��Vlog��ýLR veteran receives AT&T War Memorial Scholarship

��Vlog��ýLR senior Wendy McCloud of North Little Rock received her second consecutive $2,500 AT&T War Memorial Scholarship Oct. 18 at the University of Arkansas Razorback game at War Memorial Stadium. “We recognize military veterans possess the skills our company needs to succeed. They’re an invaluable part of our workforce,” said Arkansas AT&T President Ed Drilling. “These heroes have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and we are honored to help Arkansas veterans receive a helping hand in pursuing a higher education.” McCloud, who served in the U.S. Air Force, expects to graduate in May 2015 with a bachelor of arts in professional and technical writing and has been accepted into the ��Vlog��ýLR master’s progam in Professional and Technical Writing Program. “I am very appreciative of AT&T’s support of Arkansas’ veterans,” said McCloud. “The AT&T War Memorial Scholarship is a real tribute to all of Arkansas’ service men and women and is helping to make earning a degree a reality for me.” AT&T established the scholarship at the Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fosters smart giving to improve communities, in 2011 to support Arkansas veterans seeking higher education. The scholarship honors Arkansas’ 25 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and is awarded annually to a veteran of any branch of the U.S. Armed Services who will attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university in Arkansas. Wordsworth curator to visit ��Vlog��ýLR

Jeff Cowton, curator of the Wordsworth Trust at Dove Cottage, will visit ��Vlog��ýLR at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in meeting room G of the Donaghey Student Center. Dove Cottage is poet William Wordsworth’s first family home located in Grasmere, Cumbria. Cowton oversees care of the Wordsworth papers and is in charge of educational programs at Dove Cottage. In recognition of his 30 years of service to the Wordsworth Trust, Cowton was named a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. His presentation will consider Wordsworth’s life and work as well as the research possibilities at Dove Cottage for students and faculty. There will be a reception with hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. The presentation is hosted by ��Vlog��ýLR’s William G. Cooper Jr. Honors Program in English and is free and open to the public. International scholar visits ��Vlog��ýLR, discusses democratic transitions in Tunisia and Libya

An assistant professor of international relations at the University of Groningen in Groningen, Netherlands, will address how Libya and Tunisia are dealing with post-conflict transitions following revolution and regime change three years ago.

Dr. Christopher Lamont’s presentation on Democratic Transitions in Tunisia and Libya: Divergent Trajectories of Political Change in North Africa will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in meeting room D of ��Vlog��ýLR’s Donaghey Student Center. The presentation takes place four days after Tunisians go to the polls for National Assembly elections. Lamont’s expertise includes transitional justice and international human rights. He has been invited to give presentations all over the world in places such as Osaka, Japan; Tunis, Tunisia; Banda Aceh, Indonesia; Zagreb, Croatia; and Sydney, Australia. He has also received numerous grants and fellowships. The event is hosted by ��Vlog��ýLR’s Middle Eastern Studies Program and is free and open to the public. Students cash in on TrojanCache for Cash

TrojanCache for Cash, a geocache event for students to learn beneficial information about ��Vlog��ýLR, continues through Friday, Nov. 7, in 10 locations throughout campus. “This is a real-life campus treasure hunt for students to have the opportunity to learn more about the university, earn paraphernalia along the way and be entered to win cash prizes,” said Leanna Payton of the ��Vlog��ýLR Office of Student Housing. Up to $500 in gift cards will be given away to three grand prize winners. Clues about the caches’ locations will be posted on ��Vlog��ýLR’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts for students to search. TrojanCache for Cash is sponsored by ��Vlog��ýLR’s offices of Student Housing, Health Services, and Communications. The website geocaching.com describes geocaching as a “real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.” Participants locate a set of GPS coordinates and search for the geocache, or container, hidden at that location. EAST Club offers open invitation to EAST Night Out

The (Environmental and Spatial Technology) Club will hold its first EAST Night Out, where members will present current projects from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Dickinson Hall Room 109. “It’s an opportunity for our community to witness firsthand the ideals that EAST Club stands for,” said EAST Club Vice President Taylor Byrd, a sophomore mass communication major. “This also gives us the chance to make new partners, spread the word of what EAST is, what we do and how others can be involved.” EAST Club is a collaboration of EAST scholars and those interested in being involved with the program to utilize technology to find a solutions, according to Byrd. The ��Vlog��ýLR parking deck will be open for parking, and exit tokens will be handed out upon arrival to the lab. Signs will direct traffic from University Avenue to the parking deck as well as from the parking deck to Dickinson Hall. Psychology student to represent Little Rock at Miss Arkansas USA pageant

Ashley Mosley, a junior psychology major at ��Vlog��ýLR, will represent Little Rock in the Miss Arkansas USA 2015 pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Arend Arts Center in Bentonville. Mosley, who has Type 1 diabetes and a rare genetic disease called Ehlers Danlos, said she wants to show the diabetic community that there is nothing they cannot achieve living with the disease. “I have many young girls who will be watching and looking up to me as I take the stage,” she said. “I have the diabetic community behind me across the states, but I’m looking for support from the city I’m representing and my fellow students I attend classes with each day.” A “people’s choice” vote will automatically advance the contestant with the most votes to the semi-finals. Each vote costs $1, and every dollar is donated to Warriors for Ross, a charity that is raising funds for a young boy living with leukemia. Voting will end at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. Votes can be cast at . The semifinals will take place on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. “I realized after my diagnosis that I cannot live without insulin,” said Mosley. “I consider insulin therapy a chance that allows me to have a second shot at life, and with that life I intend to live it to the fullest and go after all of my dreams and aspirations.”

Bowen School named a top 5 regional law school

The Latina/o Student’s Guide to Law Schools named the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s William H. Bowen School of Law a Top Five Regional Law School for Latina and Latino students in its inaugural 2015 edition. The guide ranks the best law schools for students of Latin, Mexican, and Caribbean descents and considers schools’ Latina and Latino student population and tuition costs. The guide will be available Oct. 27 and will be published by Lawyers of Color Inc., established in 2008 to report important news to black legal professionals. The media and research company focuses on lawyers of color, aiming to promote the causes and contributions of minority attorneys. The Arkansas General Assembly established the ��Vlog��ýLR Bowen School of Law in 1975. It is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools.
