Mary-Kate Williams conducting research at University of Georgia

Eleven students from the University Science Scholars Program (USSP) and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) participated in the conference, presenting their research in the form of oral presentations or posters and competing with scholars from other universities across Arkansas. Mary-Kate Williams, a senior biology major from North Little Rock, won first place in biology for her oral presentation, 鈥淪pore Persistence in the Environment Drives Infection Dynamics of a Butterfly Pathogen.鈥 She conducted her research during a National Science Foundation internship at the University of Georgia. 鈥淚 was instantly attracted聽to how such a small parasite could affect their population size and distribution,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 find this cycle fascinating and would like to continue research on environmental transmission of diseases on different organisms.鈥

Senior physics major Lafayette DeRamus III received second place in physics for his poster, 鈥淒etermining Optical Characteristics for CIGS/CdS Solar Cells Through AFORS-HET Simulation Program.鈥 He worked with Dr. 聽Hye-won Seo in the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Department of Physics for his research. 鈥淭he INBRE conference was a great opportunity to network with scientists across Arkansas and confer about current research topics of interest. I love my research because of its relationship with nanotechnology, setting up a vision for the future,鈥 he said. Zachary Hicks won an honorable mention in chemistry for his poster, 鈥淣ovel Carbon-Based Supercapacitor,鈥 and Sam Shry won an honorable mention in biology for his poster, 鈥淚nvestigating Genetic Basis of Migratory Timing Using Circadian Clock Genes in Spring Chinook Salmon.鈥 Hicks was mentored by Dr. Tito Viswanathan in the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Department of Chemistry, and Shry had a NSF internship at Oregon State University. Other 糖心Vlog传媒LR students participating in the conference included Autumn Brown, Osvaldo Cassio, Jeffrey Jones, Jeffrey Kerst, Taylor McClanahan, Divya Patel, and Xeniya Rudolf.]]>

Dr. Christopher Lamont鈥檚 presentation on Democratic Transitions in Tunisia and Libya: Divergent Trajectories of Political Change in North Africa will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in meeting room D of 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Donaghey Student Center. The presentation takes place four days after Tunisians go to the polls for National Assembly elections. Lamont鈥檚 expertise includes transitional justice and international human rights. He has been invited to give presentations all over the world in places such as Osaka, Japan; Tunis, Tunisia; Banda Aceh, Indonesia; Zagreb, Croatia; and Sydney, Australia. He has also received numerous grants and fellowships. The event is hosted by 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Middle Eastern Studies Program and is free and open to the public.
