Recital to honor retiring 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock resident composer 聽]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the Department of Music will host 鈥淭he Music of Robert Boury鈥 on Sunday, Oct. 14, as a farewell recital to Dr. Boury, who will retire in December after 37 years of teaching music. The recital will begin at 3 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building and will be performed by guest artist and pianist Norman Boehm, a music professor at Hendrix College, and Suzanne Bannister, soprano. Admission is free and open to the public. The program includes Sonatina for Piano, Carnations for Voice and Piano, Portrait of Chopin for Piano, Songs of Nature and Love (premiere), and selected piano pieces, including two ragtime pieces and three Lost Waltzes. Dr. Boury, professor of music history and composition, will retire in December. 鈥淒r. Bob,鈥 as his students call him, will be remembered for great teaching and for writing the music for 鈥溙切腣log传媒LR Spirit,鈥 the university鈥檚 alma mater. Since 1986, Boury has hosted the annual Songwriters Showcase for students enrolled in his songwriting class and for songwriters in the community. He has also been a composer-in-residence in K-6 schools in North Little Rock as well as Booker T. Washington Elementary and Rockefeller Elementary schools in Little Rock and Mount St. Mary Academy. He has composed many art songs, piano and chamber pieces, three symphonies and most recently, three children’s operas. The free event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Building. This year鈥檚 special guest will be , a group originally configured in Northwest Arkansas, that鈥檚 known for its compelling, one-of-a-kind sound. Its musical arrangements, inspired by early horror, suspense, and science fiction films, feature a combination of acoustic instruments, vintage electronic hardware, and sonic novelties. Members of The Shadow Ensemble include Ryan Cockerham, conductor and violinist; Jake Henbest, synthesizer, vocalist, and percussionist; Jordan Seres, keyboardist, synthesizer, and vocalist; Alicia Contreras, wind instrumentalist; and Nery Rivas, electric guitar player and percussionist. Local artists to be featured in Songwriters Showcase]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will premiere new music by students and songwriters from the community during the 31st Songwriters Showcase with special guest artists Darci Carlson and Bonnie Montgomery.聽 The free program starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Fine Arts Building. The event is organized by composer in residence Robert Boury. Featured local composers and songwriters include Sarah Hastings, Ella Schee, Michael Heavner, John Lee Roberts, and Christopher Loper. Charles Law, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Percussion Ensemble director, will play Robert Boury鈥檚 鈥淕olden Apples of the Sun鈥 on vibraphone, celebrating Boury鈥檚 35th year of teaching at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. Darci Carlson was nominated for Outlaw Female at the Ameripolitan Music Awards in 2015, 2016, and again in 2017. She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such national acts as Shooter Jennings, The Supersuckers, Bob Wayne and The Outlaw Carnies, Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers, and Dale Watson. A multi-faceted artist, Arkansas native聽Bonnie Montgomery has an聽artistic vision that聽transcends classification聽and genre. A classically trained singer whose southern roots run deep, Montgomery has taken her raucous, high-art spin on golden-era country/western music through the U.S. and Europe. Montgomery鈥檚 composition of the modern folk opera, 鈥淏illy Blythe,鈥 about the childhood of Bill Clinton, earned the attention of publications such as The New Yorker, The Economist, The聽Huffington聽Post, and the London Daily Telegraph.
