International delegation to discuss public health in Ukraine]]> A group of Ukrainian health professionals who are working to reform their country’s healthcare system will be at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Friday, Sept. 14, to speak on 鈥淧ublic Health in Ukraine.鈥 The talk will take place from 9-10 a.m. in Dickinson Hall鈥檚 sixth-floor conference room and is free and open to the public. Members of the international delegation, which includes four physicians and one lawyer, accompanied by a bicultural facilitator and a bilingual interpreter, are guests of the U.S. Legislature鈥檚 and are hosted by , a nonprofit which contracts with the federal government to bring international delegates to Little Rock for professional training. Dr. Janea Snyder, assistant professor in the College of Education and Health Professions, and Heidi Whitman, program officer for Global Ties Arkansas, arranged Friday鈥檚 event as a way for local health care students and professionals to connect with the Ukrainian group. The discussion will center on challenges and solutions for public health problems common to all industrialized nations, such as HIV, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Prior to their arrival in Little Rock, the delegates completed an orientation in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill and had policy meetings with staff from the offices of Rep. French Hill and Sen. John Boozman. In Little Rock, delegates will collaborate on best practices for drafting effective healthcare policy, providing sufficient services for veterans, reforming primary and emergency care, and introducing medical insurance to citizens. The group also will have professional meetings at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the Eugene J. Tobin Healthcare Center, AFMC, Pulaski County Crisis Stabilization Unit, and Conway Regional Hospital. The delegation is staying in the homes of area residents serving as hospitality hosts, including the home of Jim Carr, associate professor of construction management at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, and his wife, Toni Carr, the executive director of Global Ties Arkansas. Kappa Sigma awards scholarships to three outstanding 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock freshmen]]> Kappa Sigma chapter awarded three scholarships to outstanding freshmen who exhibited exceptional leadership abilities in high school through community involvement, participation in student organizations, and service.聽 The winners of the 鈥淭ake the Lead Scholarship鈥 include Emma Guerra, a community management and development major and Spanish minor; Isaac Thomas, a double major in political science and international studies; and Landon DeKay, a political science major and legal studies minor. Chris Stephens, head of the Kappa Sigma scholarship committee, said that after being involved in leadership roles in Kappa Sigma and several other organizations on campus, he created the “Take the Lead Scholarship” to encourage freshmen to take on more leadership responsibilities. 鈥淲e need students who will step up and take on leadership roles on campus and in the community,鈥 Stephens said. 鈥淭his scholarship is a way to recognize new freshmen who had leadership roles in high school. Our three winners stood way out of the crowd.鈥 Dr. Terry Richard, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock professor emeritus of sociology and Kappa Sigma alumnus from Southwestern University, and Joe Swafford, libertarian nominee for Arkansas鈥檚 2nd Congressional District and Kappa Sigma alumnus from Arkansas Tech University, presented the $200 scholarships to the winners. The money for the scholarships was donated from the Richard Family Scholarship. 鈥淢y son was a member of Kappa Sigma, so this honors him,鈥 Richard said. 鈥淚 think it is an excellent idea to promote the largest, most diverse fraternity in the country.鈥 In her hometown of Dallas, Guerra, a graduate of Imagine International Academy of North Texas, was a varsity lacrosse player, president of the Broadcast Team, vice president of the National Honor Society, assistant editor-in-chief of the Rising Dragon Newspaper, as well as a member of the Debate Club, McKinney Youth Leadership program, and Congressional Youth Advisory Council. 鈥淚 am really happy,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was an opportunity for a little extra help to pay for college. I didn鈥檛 expect a fraternity to pick a girl, but I was happy to receive the email telling me I won.鈥 Guerra plans to complete her bachelor鈥檚 degree in three years, then serve in the Peace Corps for two years before returning to Arkansas to attend law school with plans to work as a civil rights attorney. 鈥淚 want to be an advocate for the voiceless, repressed, neglected, and abused,鈥 Guerra said. 鈥淲hether that be my advocacy coming through my practice of law for those who don鈥檛 have the ability, knowledge or means to stand up for themselves or by working for an organization that counsels those after a disaster.鈥 Thomas, a graduate of Ashdown High School, served as vice president and president of his class and Arkansas State vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Purple Pride Marching Band, Debate Team, and EAST Initiative. He served as a staff sergeant for the Civil Air Patrol. 鈥淚 was with the Air Force Civil Patrol in high school, so I pledged to join the Air Force after I get a diploma in my hand,鈥 Thomas said. 鈥淭hen I want to enter political life and become a politician and diplomat. I fully intend to join the Foreign Service Office and represent the United States of America abroad as I work with a team of specialists to promote peace, support prosperity, as I faithfully serve and protect the citizens from foreign threats.鈥 DeKay, a graduate of Maumelle High School, was actively involved in Student Council, National Honors Society, Student Council, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As a member of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, he was recognized for community projects that included teaching senior citizens in Maumelle how to use Microsoft Office, email, and social media programs and teaching middle and elementary school students about severe weather preparation. 鈥淚 plan to major in both political science and legal studies in order to become a prosecuting attorney,鈥 Dekay said. 鈥淎fter I work in the legal field for several years, I want to run for a Senate or House of Representatives seat at the national level. Professor Emeritus starts scholarship for Latino students in honor of deceased son]]> Professor Emeritus of Sociology Terry Richard-Trevi帽o and his twin brother, Jerry Richard, have donated $11,000 to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to start a scholarship that will support Latino students at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The Wesley, Jerry, and Terry Scholarship Award is named in honor of the twin brothers and Terry Richard-Trevi帽o鈥檚 son, Wesley, a 34-year-old veteran who passed away April 9 due to trauma suffered while serving in Iraq. Richard served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served two terms of combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom. 鈥淗e was my son, and he was my hero,鈥 Terry Richard-Trevi帽o said. Richard also attended 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, where he was honored on the Chancellor鈥檚 List during his first year of college and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from the DeVry Institute with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in computer science. Terry Richard-Trevi帽o, a longtime advocate for the Hispanic and Latino communities, was recently honored by Just Communities of Arkansas as one of five Humanitarian of the Year Award recipients. Professor Emeritus Terry Richard named Humanitarian of the Year]]> A retired University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor鈥攁n advocate for the Hispanic and Latino communities鈥攚ill be recognized by at its humanitarian awards ceremony.聽 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Professor Emeritus of Sociology Terry Richard will be honored at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Jack Stephens Center on 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus. Former 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor Joel Anderson will present the award to Richard. 鈥淚 do want to invite my colleagues at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to come to the banquet and help support an organization that develops inclusive programs for both youth and adults in our community,鈥 Richard said. Since 1964, the Humanitarian Awards Celebration has honored one or more individuals who has demonstrated a significant commitment to building inclusive communities. These honorees have had a meaningful impact in improving social justice and human rights efforts through their work and community service. Richard is a charter member of the Arkansas Council of the (LULAC), the nation鈥檚 oldest and largest civil rights organization, and has been an active member for more than 35 years. He served as state director from 2013 to 2015 and serves on the LULAC National Education Committee Richard has demonstrated his passion to help students in the central Arkansas area. As the head of LULAC鈥檚 university sponsorship committee, he organized the group鈥檚 first scholarship gala, which is now the primary fundraiser for LULAC scholarships in Arkansas. In the past six years, the organization has distributed more than $250,000 in scholarships and tuition waivers. More than $100,000 has been distributed to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students during this time. 聽 Richard helped Latino students enroll in college by creating Memorandums of Understanding between LULAC and six college and universities to ensure that students with a financial need can receive scholarships and additional funds. During his time at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Richard published a variety of articles related to issues of race and ethnic relations. He served as the chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the graduate coordinator for the master鈥檚 program in gerontology. In 2012, he earned the faculty of the year award from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Student Government Association. He retired from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in December 2016 after 35 years at the university. For more than 20 years, Richard has worked with his twin brother, Jerry, to fund four endowed scholarships at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The most recent, the Wesley Trace Richard Memorial Scholarship, is named in honor of Richard鈥檚 son, a Marine who died in April from trauma suffered while serving in Iraq. Richard received his Ph.D. in sociology from North Texas University and his master鈥檚 degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
