The Mark Boling Trio will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, followed by a jazz rhythm section lecture and demonstration at noon Monday, April 4. Both events will be held in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Fine Arts Building. The Mark Boling Trio will be performing music from their most recent recording 鈥淭rio Life.鈥 The concert will include original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards with roots in the tradition of the great guitar trios led by Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, John Scofield, and Pat Metheny. Main floor tickets are $15, while students can purchase tickets for $10. Tickets for 糖心Vlog传媒LR students, faculty, and staff tickets are free and can be picked up at the Department of Music office in the Fine Arts Building or at the door before the concert. The jazz rhythm lecture and demonstration is free and open to the public. Mark Boling is a jazz guitarist, teacher, composer, and author. A veteran sideman with pianist Donald Brown, Boling played in Knoxville-based bands and recorded with Brown on three records for the French label . Boling also enjoyed a rewarding collaboration with drummer Keith Brown and bassist Rusty Holloway in the Boling, Brown, & Holloway trio. Boling was a senior artist-in-residence at the Banff Center International Jazz Workshop, a visiting artist at the Brubeck Institute, and a teacher at Berklee College of Music鈥檚 summer guitar program. He received a bachelor鈥檚 degree in of music degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1981 and a master鈥檚 degree in music theory from the University of Tennessee in 1984. Today, Boling is an associate professor of music at the University of Tennessee and serves as coordinator of the jazz studies program. Trombonist Melvyn Jernigan is the only remaining original member of the group. The critically acclaimed , an ensemble of brass players, came out of the Saint Louis Brass Quintet led by then-member and trumpeter David Hickman. Summit Brass has hosted an annual institute for brass players, performed dozens of concert tours in the United States and Europe, and has recorded 10 CDs. Artspree is a performing arts series funded in part by the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Chancellor’s Circle Foundation and supported by KLRE Classical 90.5. The aim of the series is to bring unique musical and cultural performances to central Arkansas. In addition to the opening concert by the Saint Louis Brass Quintet, the series will feature an award-winning mime who has appeared on Broadway and two trios 鈥 one jazz and another that specializes in a wide array of musical periods. By raising the profile of the flute to that of an instrument capable of a wide range of tonal colors, dynamics, and expression, Bennett is considered one of the foremost musical artists performing today. He studied in London with Geoffrey Gilbert, and in France with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Marcel Moyse. According to Artspree Director Naoki Hakutani, Bennett is a legend in the music world and in many circles is considered the greatest flute player alive. His long list of accomplishments include earning the title of “Flute of Gold” from the Italian “Falaut” Flute society and the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E) for his distinguished Services to Music from Queen Elizabeth II.
