The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has awarded a $3,000 contract to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Survey Research Center to conduct a survey of hunters. Dr. Derek Slagle, an associate professor and director of both the School of Public Affairs and the Survey Research Center, is leading the project to survey hunters who received a 2025 Light Goose Conservation Order permit. After conducting and analyzing the surveys, the center will present a report of the results to the commission.

Under the conservation order, some waterfowl hunting regulations were relaxed for a period of time in order to encourage the increased harvest of Snow, Blue, and Ross鈥檚 geese and help balance their populations. Such increased hunting opportunities are one of the preferred tools biologists turn to in controlling populations. This is the 25th consecutive year that the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Survey Research Center has conducted this assessment in coordination with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

The Survey Research Center has been a regional leader in survey research for more than 30 years, and it is the only academic survey research center in the state of Arkansas. Its mission is to support the research and service needs of the university, public entities, businesses, and not-for-profit agencies in the community, and its staff have extensive expertise in questionnaire design, survey implementation, and technical reporting.

Dr. Ann Robinson, founding director of the Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education and distinguished professor in the School of Education at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, has been awarded $15,548.92 for the summer program MT Stage: From the Bard to Broadway. The Academic Enrichment for Gifted/Talented in Summer(AEGIS) grant comes from the Arkansas Department of Education, Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. Lori Delk, the Mahony Center鈥檚 professional learning director, is serving as co-administrator for the AEGIS project. Applications for the one-week commuter camp, scheduled for late June, were open to students completing grades 7-9.

During the camp, students will study William Shakespeare鈥檚 Romeo and Juliet and create modernized scenes with original song lyrics. To achieve that goal, they will explore subjects including Shakespearean insults, setting up theatrical scenes, and stage combat. The week will culminate with a showcase performance at 2 p.m. on June 27 in the Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter conference rooms, which will be open to the public. From the Bard to Broadway continues the MT Stage summer camp series, which the Mahony Center has led for several years.

The camp is a vital enrichment opportunity for students, Robinson and Delk wrote in their proposal. 鈥淎dolescent students, in particular, need to experience the arts in various forms such as music and lyrics, creative writing, and performance,鈥 they said, explaining how music exposure stimulates parts of the brain associated with math and reading, and how the performing arts can help develop youths鈥 social skills and confidence.

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Campus Garden, led by Dr. Stephen Grace, has been awarded $12,000 through the University of Arkansas Department of Agriculture鈥檚 (糖心Vlog传媒DA) Building an Arkansas Agricultural Network Development (BAAND) Project. The BAAND Project, led by Dr. Amanda Philyaw Perez at 糖心Vlog传媒DA and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture鈥檚 Agricultural Marketing Service, aims to create a network of small-scale and micro agriculture producers to coordinate efforts and grow Arkansas鈥檚 local and regional food system.

“On behalf of everyone involved with the Campus Garden, I am grateful for this award and excited for the opportunity to work with Dr. Perez and her team at 糖心Vlog传媒DA to showcase the positive impact that urban and small-scale agriculture can have on the community,” Grace said. The award will fund the hiring of a Campus Garden assistant, who will oversee operations at the garden and assist with outreach and programming activities. These activities will include weekly volunteer sessions, training and public workshops, and distributing garden produce through activities such as farm stands.

The Campus Garden was established in 2013 to bring together members of the university and the neighboring community to build a vibrant local food system and promote training in urban agriculture. Grace, the garden鈥檚 director, is an associate professor of biology and a plant physiologist. He has also served as a technical advisor for the BAAND Project, in addition to leading educational outreach such as workshops on urban agriculture.

Funding for the Building an Arkansas Agricultural Network Development (BAAND) Project was made possible by a grant/cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is excited to welcome our new ORSP Partner Kate Lincourt! In this new role, she鈥檒l serve as a liaison between ORSP and the university鈥檚 colleges and offices, helping support principal investigators, faculty and staff with grant development and management. Kate joins ORSP from the university鈥檚 Office of Institutional Research and Analytics. Kate will provide support related to sponsored programs for each of the colleges, which requires close collaboration with faculty and financial staff in grant activities.

鈥淜ate will provide support to principal investigators, staff and finance directors on how to perform various business processes related to grant activity,鈥 ORSP Director Tammie Cash said. 鈥淪he will also act as a resource in the proposal development process.鈥

Kate said she sees part of her new role as serving to help route people to the right person in ORSP, as well as providing answers to frequent questions. She emphasized that her focus will be on helping members of the university community navigate the grants process, not replacing the work done by other units of ORSP. 鈥淥nce you get assigned to someone in the office, I’m not replacing any of that,鈥 she said.

She鈥檚 hit the ground running learning the processes involved in applying for, setting up, and managing grants, along with talking to stakeholders across campus about their needs and how she can help them. Part of that, she said, has been working on putting herself in a researcher鈥檚 shoes. She鈥檚 especially looking for opportunities to improve the training and information ORSP offers our partners across campus.

You can contact Kate with any questions at kclincourt@ualr.edu or 501-607-3396.

The post New Indirect Cost Rates appeared first on Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

]]>
The indirect cost rates for some types of research will increase annually every year through FY27 (which begins July 1, 2026). Indirect cost rates are meant to reimburse the university for the investments it makes to support research, but which can鈥檛 easily be attributed to a specific project. This can range from the cost of buildings and laboratories where research takes place to general supplies like paper, toner, and pencils. Utilities, maintenance, and secretarial or general administrative expenses also fall under indirect costs. In order for the university to be reimbursed for the money it spends to support research and sponsored programs, indirect costs are charged at the established rate on top of the total project cost.

Current rates

The university鈥檚 current rate agreement went into effect on July 1, 2023 and applies to all grants, contracts and other agreements with the federal government. The rates are divided into four categories: Organized Research, Instruction, On Campus Other, and Off Campus. The rates for three of these categories will be the same throughout the agreement:

InstructionOn Campus OtherOff Campus
44.5%38.5%26%

To be eligible for the off-campus rate, you must include rent as a direct cost in your budget.

The rates for Organized Research will increase annually as follows:

FY25
(begins 7/1/2024)
FY26
(begins 7/1/2025)
FY27
(begins 7/1/2026)
44%45%46%

This incremental change also affects multi-year projects. If your project starts in FY24 and ends in FY26, each year will be charged a different indirect cost rate.
Visit our website for the most up-to-date information on the university鈥檚 indirect cost rate.

Notable Information

These new rates do not affect current awards that are calculated with the previous rate agreement. The rate will stay the same on grants and contracts awarded before FY24, even on multi-year projects.
For proposals submitted with the previous rates, the rate used during the proposal process will be the rate applied to the subsequent award.
The definition of the off-campus indirect cost rate has changed. The off-campus rate should be used if the project meets any of the following criteria:
A. More than 50% of a project is performed in off-campus facilities not owned by the institution
or
B. More than 50% of a project is performed in off-campus facilities, and rent is directly allocated or charged to the project.
A project can only use one indirect cost rate. If any of the above criteria are met, then the off-campus indirect cost rate will apply to the entire project.
